California Gov. Newsom Trying to “Trump-Proof” State by Creating Stronger Relationship With Mexico
And while Newsom derides tariffs and wants to open a new port are entry, Many in Mexican migrant camps are already quiet-quitting their plans to enter our country illegally.
I have often joked with my Legal Insurrection team that I enjoy being a “foreign correspondent.”
But, like the Babylon Bee, I often find my quips turn into prophesy.
The last time I wrote about California Gov. Gavin Newsom, I noted he called an emergency session to divert $25 million for legal cases he anticipates in his effort to “Trump-proof” the state.
Now he is going even more rogue. After President-elect Donald Trump threatened Mexico with tariffs unless they stemmed the flow of immigration and fentanyl, Newsom is working to create an even stronger relationship with our neighbor to the south and slammed Trump’s tariff proposals.
California Governor Gavin Newsom stressed the importance of trade with Mexico and immigrant labor at a press conference near the border on Thursday, striking a contrast with President-elect Donald Trump’s threat of tariffs and mass deportations.
Newsom, a Democrat, portrayed the Republican president-elect’s planned 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada as a tax on Americans who could see increased prices if the plan moves forward when Trump takes office on Jan. 20.
Trump won a second term last month promising protectionist U.S. trade policies and a sweeping crackdown on illegal immigration while also taking aim at transgender rights and diversity initiatives. Newsom and California Attorney General Rob Bonta have emerged as prominent Democratic opponents of Trump’s agenda, pledging to defend the state’s liberal policies.
Newsom called the Trump tariff plans “one of the biggest tax increases in U.S. history.”
Newsom said California was committed to advancing plans to open a new legal border crossing near San Diego, and derided the efforts at mass deportation.
He said the state would work with outgoing President Joe Biden’s administration but that Trump’s support would be needed to complete it by late 2027.
…Agricultural groups have said Trump’s plans for record deportations could decimate the nation’s food supply if it extends to farm workers, a concern Newsom echoed.
“The impacts of mass deportation on the cost of food in this state, in this nation, are off the charts,” he said.
Trump officials were not impressed with the posturing.
Trump transition spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said Trump’s policies would benefit American workers and rejected Newsom’s suggestion that prices would rise.
“President Trump has promised tariff policies that protect the American manufacturers and working men and women from the unfair practices of foreign companies and foreign markets,” Leavitt said in a statement.
But neither are the Mexicans, it seems.
It turns out many in Mexican migrant camps are already quiet-quitting their plans to enter our country illegally.
In sprawling migrant camps across Mexico City, people are giving up their plans to cross into the United States and are instead planning to settle in Mexico or begin the long trek back home.
‘I’m just going to give up and go back to Venezuela,’ said a woman in one of the squalid encampments, where thousands of migrants have constructed tents with tarps and scrap material.
‘I have children to take care of,’ she added. ‘I’ll just go back because, with Donald Trump, it’s going to be too hard.’
This is a cruel reality for millions of people drawn to Mexico by the Biden administration’s indulgent border policies – only to find that Americans overwhelmingly rejected the misguided approach in the 2024 election.
Newsom appears to be operating under the mistaken notion this is 2017. In 2025, Trump will have a better, stronger, and more MAGA-motivated team and a more supportive media in X and podcasts.
Stunts, posturing, and virtue-signalling will not have the effect they once did on the electorate. This will likely be even more true in California, as residents will wonder why they aren’t enjoying the prosperity other states have under Trump 2.0.
Trump is likely to be more successful at California-proofing the country.

I thought states weren’t allowed their own foreign policies. I know they’re not allowed their own immigration policies.
States can have their own foreign policies, just as you and I can. They can’t speak for the USA, and they can’t enter into treaties, alliances, or confederations, but they can have trade missions in foreign countries, or tourism offices, or liaisons with their foreign counterparts in various places, and they can certainly express their opinions.
Nothing Newsome’s proposing seems to be problematic.
I’m not surprised you see no problems.
Especially since it’s clear his intent is to undermine federal law.
Fortunately Newsome has free speech. He will need to break the law with his actions. That could happen if he openly subverts federal law.

Making California more Mexico is not good for the US. The INTENT is the issue. There is lasse faire…but this is lazy stupid.
Newsom, by his statements, wants to declare his intentions to make Ca a territory, no longer an American state..
Maybe he is even thinking of returning it to Mexico?

Newsom has already called California a Nation State.
A couple of points –
1. “The poor ye shall always have with thee.” As much sympathy as I have for the poor of the world, we, America, cannot save them all. At some point we must make a choice as to who we help, and to what degree because to try and help too many (as New York City has discovered) does a disservice to everyone including the benefactors.
2. Since we must choose, we should choose the best of those who ask; those who will become a net benefit to the country. This is not a new concept- Ellis Island operated on this basis for decades. Note this does not mean that everyone must be a budding Nuclear Physicist to gain access to living in America- however they should be healthy, be able and willing to work in a field (perhaps as farm workers) where there are job vacancies.
3, California has the right to do as they choose with Mexico with a couple of exceptions in my opinion. They cannot be allowed to disregard Federal Law without consequences, perhaps in the form of withholding federal funds. To allow illegal people to enter California has a problem similar to allowing drugs illegal in the United States to enter California: we have no effective mechanisms to keep them from moving to other states after their entry.
Newsom is teeing up his 2028 run. He recognizes that the 2024 election showed that the American electorate are hungry for more and wackier leftist policies. It will be interesting to watch Newsom positioning himself over the next 4 years.
Another takeaway from Gov. Noisome’s news conference: he is soon going to have to make a decision on what his hair color will be during the new Presidential campaign(which, for him, began six weeks ago) His greasy mullet is now at least half gray, which makes him look indecisive, but dousing it with Grecian Formula will make it obvious that he’s lying about what the true color is. What a dilemma for the would-be Leader of the Free World…

Newsom’s brand of clientelism relies on a steady stream of federal grant funds to maintain control over state agencies and social justice warriors; top to bottom everyone gets a taste.
He’s the rainmaker. What happens when the federal grant rain machine dries up? Trump’s administration is the drought. Will Mexican/Chinese officials step in – albeit at a far lesser degree? That’s why Newsom is sniffing around. He needs a new patron (under the guise of resisting Trump.)

The foundational error in Newsom’s system being mercenaries don’t stay bought; they only become restive and resentful rivals.
If I didn’t know I was on the Legal Insurrection website, when I read the headline to this post, I would think I was on the Babylon Bee.
