Witnesses needed to describe the guy? Did the Secret Service not see where they were shooting?
How does the Secret Service fail to secure somewhere Trump regularly visits?

Well, the only thing I have come up with is I read they were carrying sidearms.
Rifles may or may not have been carried.
Fox says above that Trump had snipers with tripods (for rifles)… assuming they’re not talking through their hats.
Reportedly SS saw just a barrel poking through a fence and foliage, so shooting somewhat blind (which is a liabiity issue if you launch one into a neighboring building). Fence provided concealment and getaway lead.
I meant to say that the SS shooting back at the assassin were shooting somewhat blind. I’m sure the assassin had an adequate view.
He may have had a good view, but as I understand it he didn’t get any shots off.
Trump needs to wake TF up and dump the Secret Service.
At this point the BEST explanation is they are simply too incompetent to protect him.

The debate failed to knockout Trump so attempts to assassinate him will escalate. An AK-47 is a crude choice for an assassination rifle. Now I expect the would-be assassin will be shot trying to escape. Or in the alternative, this one really is a lone nut.
My recommendation to Trump. Hire your own private security. Clearly the Secret Service is either completely incompetent or in on it. Trump should hire a security team from Israel. They are very good at this game having the intelligence and skill for the job. Of course there is the matter of Oct 13 where the government also proved themselves incompetent. That’s why Trump needs a private security firm.
I’ve been staring at the photo of the weapon (which isn’t great), and it does not look like the butttstock of an AK-variant to me. Instead, it looks a bit more like a Mini-14 (or variant). AKs tend to have pistol grips. The weapon in question appears to be sporting an grip integrated into the buttstock, like many sport rifles do (including Mini-14s). Does that matter? Ultimately, probably not. There are so many Mini-14 variants chambered for such a variety of calibers, it could still be using a 7.62.
Thumbhole stock conversions were the rage for a few years, for use in states that had defined “assaults weapons” as having “any N of this list of demonic features,” one of which was a pistol grip. There are plenty of them out there for AKs. This guy was from Hawaii, whose gun laws I don’t know in detail, other than they stink.
I thought it might be just as you described. It was en vogue for a while to turn these things into Dragunov clones. But, this looks like a solid-buttstock with no cut-out whatsoever…at least as best I can tell with the photo that’s available (that has very poor lighting). Also curious how a guy who should be on the NICS registry due to prior convictions has access to any weapon.
Not a Mini-14 or Mini-30. Looking as closely as I can on the crappy photo it appears to be an SKS with an aftermarket stock and 30 round magazine.
I doubt a real would-be assassin will be shot. It will be a patsy. Whether or not they can get a shooter who is a night club owner dying of terminal cancer remains to be seen.

About half an hour ago I caught the end of an interview on FOX News with some government official of some sort, sorry no more detail than that. He made the preposterous assertion that it’s no big deal how poorly the USSS has been in protecting DJT, because it is standard procedure for this level of coverage for a former president.
1) He’s not just a former president, he’s the leading candidate to be elected president again in less than two months.
2) He barely survived an attempt on his life two months ago.
3) It’s known that Iran has a bounty on his head.

My question is this: How did the would-be shooter know that Trump would be there at that time? Trump’s foursome was one or two holes away. Hmm.

What’s infuriating is that this was a regular location for Trump, a course he plays regularly. It wasn’t some new place like a campaign rally the Secret Service had to do a bunch of scouting and advance work and prior planning to understand the layout ID weak points and so on.
How is there no roaming perimeter security from local LEO? No surveillance at minimum on low visibility areas? 400 yards +/- isn’t a terribly difficult distance for a competent marksman. Plenty of folks can make a shot at this distance, that’s civilians BTW much less military background.
If it isn’t a deliberate decision to provide an undermanned security detail/arrangement for DJT then it is flipping incompetence. Either way folks making the decisions about the size of the security detail and what resources and coordination with State/local LEO are made need to fully explain exactly what is happening right before they get fired. If they fail to cooperate and refuse to be forthcoming then fire them, revoke their pension and put them into confinement pending trial.
I have been struck today by the outpouring of hatred for Trump on Facebook, to the point of praise for the assassination attempts. I have never made any secret of my disdain for him, but I long ago explicitly told myself to abolish the H-word from my thinking and expressions.
No matter how much I disdain him, Senile Joe, the Hildebeast, and Kamalatoe, and George W. “Chimpo” Bush before them, I have never hated any of them and certainly have never even come remotely close to wishing for their assassination.
I will give some credit to Kamalatoe for rejecting this attempt, and wonder just how many rank-and-file Democrats are so thoroughly captured by their hatred that they would actually cheer these two attempts and wish for more. It’s outrageous, depressing, deeply offensive, unamerican, and worrisome.

I would assume that whatever Veltri said is public misdirection. That will be confirmed if CNN or ABC runs with it.
