Trump Shooter’s Family Called Police, Reported Him Missing Hours Before the Rally

“…eventually called law enforcement to indicate that he was missing and they were worried.”

Fox News reported that Thomas Matthew Crooks’ family called the police to report him missing just hours before the rally:

Thomas Matthew Crooks’ parents were looking for him on Saturday in the hours leading up to the Trump rally shooting and eventually called law enforcement to indicate that he was missing and they were worried, Fox News has learned.

It’s unclear what his parents told authorities, but the call happened on Saturday before Crooks later opened fire at Trump during the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The parents are being cooperative with authorities and the FBI is still trying to determine a motive for the attack, sources also told Fox News.

Hmmmm. Not sure this adds much, other than they thought he might be in trouble.
It opens more questions, IMO. Did they think he had been groomed? Did they think he had gone off his nut? Just when did he actually borrow that rifle from Dad?

TargaGTS in reply to GWB. | July 17, 2024 at 1:22 pm

The rifle part really is critical. If they called police and told them our son is missing as is our AR-15 with the GOP candidate for president scheduled to speak nearby in just a few hours and the panic button wasn’t pushed (and it clearly wasn’t), it’s another unbelievable failure of government in a string of calamitous failures from that day. I expect the worst case scenario here.

      jb4 in reply to TargaGTS. | July 17, 2024 at 1:42 pm

It would also be problematical if they failed to tell the police that their gun was also missing, although conceivably not known at the time. It also seems odd that police would be called when a 20 year old son is out for a few hours.

        TargaGTS in reply to jb4. | July 17, 2024 at 1:53 pm

With respect to your last sentence, that’s exactly why I’m presuming they discovered the weapon was missing. It’s seems the most plausible explanation about why parents would worry about the absence an adult son who’s employed.

stevewhitemd in reply to TargaGTS. | July 17, 2024 at 3:48 pm

Yes, all pretty logical — former president is in town, our boy has gone missing as has our AR-15 — all leads to local LEO chief informing the SS agent in charge of a potential problem.

What we don’t know, of course, is the context of his being ‘missing’ — had he done this before? Did he have a problem with drugs, alcohol, or mental health? Was he supposed to be with someone (“Mom, Dad, I’ll be with Jennifer today” and then they hear from Jennifer that he never showed up, etc.)?

Did he have authorized use of the weapon — that is to say, he’d borrowed it before and so the fact that it wasn’t in the cabinet or rack not an obvious concern?

          All sorts of questions.

          Eagle1 in reply to TargaGTS. | July 17, 2024 at 4:46 pm

Somewhat unusual to call in a missing person report on an adult after just a few hours without some other types of flag.

        gonzotx in reply to jb4. | July 17, 2024 at 5:12 pm

They did tell th police the son and gun were missing, seeing as dad was with him shooting in the am at the club, you have to know there was a conversation with the son that did not go well

henrybowman in reply to gonzotx. | July 18, 2024 at 1:28 am

Maybe dad told the kid he was a ludicrously bad shot?

markm in reply to gonzotx. | July 18, 2024 at 10:42 am

A bad shot wouldn’t have come within inches of Trump’s head on the first shot. He sprayed the follow-up shots all over the stage, but that’s probably got more to do with his mental condition than his training in shooting.

      irishgladiator63 in reply to TargaGTS. | July 17, 2024 at 6:05 pm

Bethel Park and Butler are about 50 miles apart, over an hour drive if you drive anywhere near the speed limit. In different counties. This is also the Pittsburgh metro area. There are several million people in that area, and I would say about half of them have firearms. It’s not the warning bell you think.

    AF_Chief_Master_Sgt in reply to GWB. | July 17, 2024 at 2:28 pm

The police knew exactly where he was. In fact, it was reported that one of the donut dimwits retreated when the assassin pointed the weapon at him.

The other donut dimwits were told repeatedly that someone was low crawling on the roof, and they did nothing.

      TheOldZombie in reply to AF_Chief_Master_Sgt. | July 17, 2024 at 2:48 pm

It’s being reported now that there were two police officers. One boosted the other to look on the roof and when he saw the rifle pointed at him he fell back.

Now here’s where it gets even crazier. Both officers got on their radios and radio in that there was a guy on the roof with a rifle. Yet this guy still managed to get several shots off.

        AF_Chief_Master_Sgt in reply to TheOldZombie. | July 17, 2024 at 3:57 pm

        Good point.

I still stand by what I said.

That officer may have been forced to take cover, but he should have continued to engage even if it meant firing his weapon to alert others. Firing off 15 rounds, and being heard from the direction of the shooter, would have directed attention where it belonged.

At that point, the SA could have dropped Trump to the ground and out of danger.

Instead, Trump was wounded and another is dead.

Failure of EPIC proportions. This wasn’t a “shoot in the air” situation as Biden often talks about. It was a “DANGER” in this direction situation.

I listened to an interview with the county official who recounted the incident. Apparently, when the shooter turned and leveled his weapon at the officer – who was hanging off the side of the roof with both hands, pulling himself up to be able to peer over the roof line – the officer flinched (understandably) and fell 8′ to the ground. The official stated that the fall ‘injured’ the cop.

The time between his falling back and them getting on the radio was how much time the shooter needed to start shooting.

I don’t think THOSE radio calls were much of a warning, coming just before the bang of the first shot.

henrybowman in reply to TheOldZombie. | July 18, 2024 at 1:31 am

“Yet this guy still managed to get several shots off.”
The cop showing up rattled him. He knew he’d been made, and that if he didn’t get his shots off immediately, he never would. That sort of pressure is not conducive to good marksmanship in the untrained. So he took some Hail Mary shots and failed.

This is old news, it was posted days ago.
Apparently he was shooting with his father in the morning at the rifle club
So what happened at the club that dad felt his son was “missing” just a few hours later… with his gun

The fact that Fox says this is new news, is BS

A 20 y.o. out and about on a sunny summer Saturday should be no cause for alarm. Why were his parents concerned enough to call the police? It’s another piece to this murderer’s background. (Yes, not convicted, let him sue.)

I find it strange that reports from yesterday said his parents were shocked that he was the attempted assassin.

So, if they had no suspicions about their son being a bit cuckoo for cocoa puffs, why did they report him (a 20 year old adult) missing to the police after just a few hours?

Heck if I’d called the police every time my kids went missing for a couple of hours when they were teenagers and early 20’s, I’d have had to have had them on speed dial.

As Targa said: we need more information to make any sense of this…as if the authorities care whether we ever make any sense of it or not.

Just one more data point that makes this whole thing fail the smell test to me.

Is anyone else having a hard time believing that a 20 year old in this day and age had zero social media presence?

I’m not sure how the mechanics of completely disappearing someone’s social media presence would work…is that something the feds would even be capable of? It’s just…weird.

Sailorcurt in reply to Sailorcurt. | July 17, 2024 at 1:57 pm

A little more info: According to this version of the report, they didn’t call the police before the rally, but after the shooting, and they reported that both their son and the AR-15 were missing.

So, I’m guessing that after they’d heard the news about the shooting, they suspected that it may have been their son…why else call the Police.

But what would make them suspicious of that? There had to have been warning signs for them to jump to that conclusion. Pretty big warning signs.

Still not passing the smell test.

Morning Sunshine in reply to Sailorcurt. | July 17, 2024 at 2:13 pm

my 20-yo daughter did not have a social media presence. Nope. not even any pictures of her on other people’s pages if I could help it, when she was a minor.. She had to get one for her job, but that was short lived and she let it lapse when she left there. That was back in March.

TargaGTS in reply to Sailorcurt. | July 17, 2024 at 2:24 pm

“Is anyone else having a hard time believing that a 20 year old in this day and age had zero social media presence?”

Simply not believable, and I say that as the father of three twentysomething children. Social media is to them like jean jackets were to Gen-Xers in the 1980s; everyone had at least one.

GWB in reply to gonzotx. | July 17, 2024 at 2:14 pm

Yeah, but that’s not a USSS cow. That’s obviously a specially trained Roof Cow. The CIA picks all those up from the USSS training when they’re discovered.

(Also, if there had been a cow up on that roof prior to the shooter… it might have spoiled his plans. “Really? Right where I was gonna lay? Eeeewwwww.” Maybe we should introduce this tactic to the Secret Service.)

nordic prince in reply to GWB. | July 18, 2024 at 7:42 am

Everybody knows that Roof Cows are specially bred to have shorter legs on one side. They are related to Hill Cows.

TargaGTS in reply to gonzotx. | July 17, 2024 at 2:16 pm

Obviously, that is a Mossad-trained ‘Sniper Cow’ that Iran has been warning the world about for years. It’s in the same unit as the “Laser Sharks.”

Concur that tremendous amount of information is not known (at least not publically known).

Not normal that a parent would be concerned about a missing 20 year old for a few hours.

A) did the kid have mental issues the parents were aware of that missing for a few hours would cause concern (autism? perhaps)
B) did the kid give off signs to alert the parent ?
C) did the kid say something in the recent past to alert the parents to possible issues?
D) did the parents know the rifle was missing – missing with the kid?

Again too much is not publically known at this time.

I believe it was reported almost immediately they knew the son had his father’s rifle with him.

    TargaGTS in reply to Joe-dallas. | July 17, 2024 at 2:50 pm

With respect to D), yes according to NBC News. The kid’s mental health really is the unknown, at least publicly. Both his parents were licensed mental health counselors, make of that what you will. But, his father seems a bit touched himself if this interview by NBC of his uncle is any indication. The uncle hadn’t spoken to his brother and his family since 2019…

    https://www.nbcnews.com/news/live-blog/trump-assassination-attempt-rally-shooting-live-update-rcna161972/rcrd46225?canonicalCard=true

One thing that has not been helpful is the absolute radio silence from law enforcement, but particularly the USSS since the event, absent a short presser in the early overnight hours after the shooting which produced little in actual information. Lack of information breeds distrust.

    Joe-dallas in reply to Joe-dallas. | July 17, 2024 at 4:16 pm

Thanks – I stated a lot of information is not publicaly known at this time
    However –
Posts subsequent to mine above seem to have reported better and more up to date info.

    As such, I stand corrected.

There are assertions that someone or some people shorted Trump stock in the week prior to the popping sounds.

henrybowman in reply to Petrushka. | July 18, 2024 at 1:34 am

My son mentioned this today. An outfit called Austin something or other heavily shorted Trump social media technology stock either that morning or the previous day.

FBI needs to release fact based information on a nightly basis – unless they think Crooks was involved in a wide ranging assassination conspiracy.

The words “ongoing investigation” doesn’t cut the mustard.

Paddy M in reply to Tiki. | July 17, 2024 at 2:58 pm

The FBI’s job is not to serve the public or provide information. It’s job is to protect Democrats and punish their enemies.

I wonder what the parents were talking about Trump at the dinner table? Maybe as opinionated as The New Republic? What had the kid said to or agreed with the parents? Why was the AR bought? Sandy Hook V2.0?

henrybowman in reply to alaskabob. | July 17, 2024 at 2:44 pm

So. No political signs, no social media presence, no strongly held opinions reported by neighbors… but an AR15 in the closet that they take out to “family range days.”
Sounds like the profile of “gray man” conservatives trying to get along under the radar.
Except that if anyone in such a family were going to declare open season on a politician, Trump would be exactly the wrong choice.
Second hypothesis: they’re all CIA assets.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair | July 17, 2024 at 2:46 pm

This is incredibly weird. Why would they be missing him on a random Saturday. After a few hours (I assume) of ‘looking for him’?? A 20 year old??? Unless the kid told them what he was thinking of doing. The kid had to have told them what he was planning. But the dad knew the kid went to the range the day before and lent him a rifle for it (which, by itself, is entirely innocent, obviously).

I often say that conservatives who make business plans that depend on the cooperation of “enemy” service entities (e.g., Facebook, pre-Musk Twitter, Amazon cloud services, Bank of America) are wasting their money and effort setting themselves up for failure when they inevitably get stabbed in the back.

Looks like Republican presidential candidates who depend on Secret Service just got schooled.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair | July 17, 2024 at 2:48 pm

And, if this is all so, why didn’t the secret service consider that a credible threat from the start – since I would assume that it is vanishingly rare that a parent calls up to report their grown kid is gone (after only a few hours on a weekend day) with a rifle and they are worried?
