Yale to Offer Single-Gender Dorms and Bathrooms After Muslim Students Raise Concerns

Yale to offer single-gender dorms after Muslim students voiced concerns
Yale College students have the option of requesting single-gender on-campus housing and bathrooms for the 2023-24 school year following weeks of demands from religious students and allies.
Dean of Students Melanie Boyd announced that Yale would provide single gender housing options in an email mid-March, The Yale Daily News reported March 10.
Current Yale Housing residents had to submit their “housing intent” form by March 10 for the 2023-24 academic year, according to Yale’s website. The 2023-24 Housing Application is due April 1.
Advocates of single-gender housing framed it as a religious exemption that “disproportionately affects Muslim students,” according to an open letter submitted to the housing office.
“The Yale College Housing Office is in charge of housing for the entire College, with the goal of standardizing the selection process,” the letter stated. “However, Yale does not appear to deem religious accommodations a necessary part of this standard.”
“Often, [Muslim students] succumb to being pushed to off-campus housing, at a rate higher than their non-Muslim peers,” the letter continued. “Students who remain on campus are forced to change their habits to avoid sacrificing their core beliefs.”
“Without single-gender bathrooms, Muslim women are forced to be on guard and wear a hijab, even during times when they normally would not: just taking a shower or going to the bathroom becomes a stressful and inconvenient burden, taking a toll on their mental health,” the authors wrote. “Living quarters become a space of anxiety, not rest.”
Without single-gender bathrooms, Muslim students also could not perform wudu, a ritual purification using water that requires removal of the hijab, according to the letter.
“If Muslim women are not able to remove their hijab because of the mixed-gender bathrooms, they cannot perform wudu, and, as a result, they cannot fulfill their obligatory daily prayer,” the letter stated. “Mandatory mixed-gender bathrooms directly interfere with students’ right to their religious practices,” the letter’s authors wrote.
The open letter called for “recognizing and guaranteeing religious accommodations as a formal part of the housing process.”
Dozens of Yale student organizations signed the letter, including religious groups Muslim Students Association, Orthodox Jews at Yale, and the Black Muslim Students Association.
The letter was also signed by a number of racial and ethnic affinity groups, such as the Asian American Student Alliance, Black Women’s Coalition, and the Native and Indigenous Student Association at Yale, as well as by the Queer Student Alliance and the Young Democratic Socialists of America.

They would never had done this out of a request from Christians, and that just shows their bigotry.
And fear of Muslim violence.
In most Muslim countries homosexuality is illegal. In several it is punishable by death, which kind of supersedes the heck out of claimed LGBT ‘rights’.
So there’s that.
Orthodox Jewish students did make such a request when Yale first announced that it was getting rid of single sex dorms and single sex suites. Yale firmly told them that the mixed sex rooming arrangements were an essential part of he Yale experience and that they should find another school if they didn’t want mixed sex accommodations.

It’s amazing what kind of respect you can get from American authorities when they credibly fear getting their heads cut off. It’s almost like the respect Americans citizens would get if had something like a “right to bear arms.”
It is a well established historical fact that it isn’t the right to keep and bear, it’s the willingness to use to keep any right someone tries to take.
The proble is that Jews in the Diaspora will not act violently, which is the proper thing to do. Other groups, not do much. So , which squeaky will gets oiled?

Hmm. I seem to remember that the Biden administration issued a very strange order that prohibited all colleges from having single sex dorms, and as this piece acknowledges, single sex bathrooms. Why the Feds think this bizarre demand is Constitutional or necessary is beyond reason, what is clear is the Federal Bureaucracy is a diseased beast that engages in satisfying the whims of the cranks and micro-agendists who make up the same.
If there were such a binding order then Yale would not have been able to finally see reason and do this.
If Yale were finally seeing reason, more than a decade after denying similar relief to Jews, the exemption would not be limited to Muslims.

No, religious observance is not at all voluntary. In the believer’s view it is God’s command, which is far more binding than any mere government law. Federal statutes may be the supreme law of the land, but God’s commands are the supreme law of the entire world. So no, believing as they do that uncovering themselves in front of men would be illegal, if they are forced to share a bathroom with men they will be forced to cover up there, which would a major pain.

Precedent is that LG only approached Christian bakers to make their cakes. None, to my knowledge, sued Muslim bakers. It seems that Trans is higher on the hierarchy than LG, but this would give us an opportunity to see how Trans relates to Islam.
Or it shows that LG etc rates their own self-preservation above PC.
How many stories does the dorm have?
Remember when all college dorms were segregated by sex? I don’t know why they changed that. Were rapists and voyeurs having too much trouble finding victims? Did colleges need more impulsive sex and the pregnancies that often result? Were single-sex parties where men could act disgusting, or women could do whatever they do with no men to observe them the worst problem on campus?
