Los Angeles City Council Looking to Make City a Sanctuary City

Los Angeles City Council Looking to Make City a Sanctuary City

California really is in its own world, isn’t it? Los Angeles missed the catastrophes in DC, New York City, and Chicago due to their mayors and politicians declaring the cities sanctuary cities.

I say that because the Los Angeles City Council is considering legislation to make it a sanctuary city. Paging Texas Gov. Greg Abbott:

Councilmembers Eunisses Hernandez, Nithya Raman and Hugo Soto-Martinez want to establish L.A. as a “Sanctuary City.”

The City Council previously passed a symbolic resolution that declared Los Angeles a “City of Sanctuary” but never wrote sanctuary policies into law.

The city’s current immigration policies are reflective of an executive directive issued by former Mayor Eric Garcetti and the Los Angeles Police Department’s internal policies and are subject to change, as they have not officially been codified as permanent protections for the city’s immigrants.

Hernandez said, “Symbolic gestures are not enough, internal policies that can be changed from one day to the next are not enough; our undocumented residents deserve safety and security.”

Hernandez said it’s past time for “Los Angeles to permanently codify protections for our undocumented community members into city law,” which would happen with the council’s motion:

The council members’ motion instructs the city to prepare an ordinance that would “permanently enshrine sanctuary policies into municipal law…it would also close critical gaps in existing policy and limit direct and indirect data sharing with federal immigration authorities and contracted private companies engaged in immigration enforcement activities,” according to a statement from the city.

“More than one out of three people who live in Los Angeles, including my own parents, are immigrants, and one in ten are undocumented,” said Soto-Martinez. “This is an important and long overdue step to codify protections for undocumented immigrants into law so we can finally make Los Angeles a true sanctuary city.”

The motion also directs the city to prohibit “inquiring about or collecting information about an individual’s immigration status” and “engaging in investigation or enforcement related to an individual’s immigration status”.

Abbott has sent illegal immigrants to DC, New York City, and Chicago since last April since the cities are supposedly sanctuary cities.

The influx has done nothing but causes problems. The Democrat mayors finally turned their attention to the federal government and its lack of help to secure the border or even address the immigration issue.

I suppose it’s too much to hope for, but the city’s residents and some of our so-called journalists should ask: what will this cost? where will the city get the money to cover said cost?

Silly rabbit, being a leftist means never having to know the cost or how things will be paid for.

    Milhouse in reply to Fat_Freddys_Cat. | March 8, 2023 at 5:46 pm

This will cost exactly nothing, since everything in it is already being practiced anyway. Making it a law doesn’t change anything on a practical level.

Except maybe some of the busloads of hostile foreign invaders being shipped to NYC, etc. can be shipped to LA County.

I’m sure the mayor of Yuma is uncorking a celebratory bottle.
His bus bill is about to go way down.

Milhouse in reply to Subotai Bahadur. | March 9, 2023 at 1:10 am

Nothing’s preventing that from happening now. The new law will not change that at all.

Ridiculing hypocrisy is so much easier when the hypocrisy is on the written record.

Milhouse in reply to Milhouse. | March 12, 2023 at 4:10 am

What’s that got to do with it? We’re not talking about ridicule, we’re talking about cost. This will not cost LA even one cent, nor will it save Yuma one cent. Nobody’s bus bill will go down, and nobody’s anything bill will go up or down. It has no practical effect whatsoever.

Making illegal aliens exempt from the laws US citizens are required to live by doesn’t make them part of our community; It places them above it.

Milhouse in reply to Socratease. | March 8, 2023 at 5:45 pm

This doesn’t make them exempt from any laws the rest of us have to obey. It just means the city doesn’t cooperate with immigration authorities, and doesn’t inquire into anyone’s immigration status. That puts them on the exact same foot as those here legally; if they break laws that everyone else has to keep they’re dealt with the same as anyone else.

      Just ask Kate Steinle.

Milhouse in reply to henrybowman. | March 9, 2023 at 1:12 am

Steinle’s killer was treated exactly the way a US citizen would have been. He did not get away with anything that a WASP US citizen would not have.

henrybowman in reply to Milhouse. | March 9, 2023 at 4:32 pm

          Sure.

Garcia-Zarate, who was in the US illegally and had already been deported five times, admitted to accidentally firing the gun…

“If you return to this country again and you are back in front of me, I will not spare you. Let this be your last warning: Do not return to this country,” US District Judge Vince Chhabria said during his sentencing hearing.

Same as any of us would have gotten.
Pull the other one, it has got bells on.

Milhouse in reply to Milhouse. | March 12, 2023 at 4:15 am

Are you even listening to yourself? He got seven years for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Would any US citizen have got longer?! In what way would a US citizen have been treated more harshly than he was?

Cool beans. Let’s see how it plays out. As Freddy stated, gonna guess they haven’t put pen to paper on direct costs much less indirect costs. Nor the predictable impact on increased demand for services like water, electricity, hospitals, road use and first responders.

Notice the definitely brown color of the people in this picture

LaRosa said they will “retake” California and America

Looks like they are well on their way

“the Los Angeles City Council is considering legislation to make it a sanctuary city”

Would it look any different than it does now?

Go ahead. That move would simply give Abbot, DeSantis and other states more targets to which to ship these illegals.

JackinSilverSpring in reply to pfg. | March 8, 2023 at 12:26 pm

    My thoughts exactly.

Milhouse in reply to pfg. | March 8, 2023 at 5:48 pm

No, it wouldn’t look any different than it does now, because LA is already a sanctuary city, and the whole CA is a sanctuary state. This just entrenches it in city law.

New Flash: It has been for decades.

I remember reading article(s) about Seattle losing annual conference(s) over unsafe streets – partly the homeless – partly druggies – partly aggressive pan handlers. Darned if I can find the article now as the search engines seem to promote propaganda and what cities are doing to treat it all.

Wifey and I vote with our feet – wouldn’t set foot in Seattle except for the rare surgery at Swedish and even then drive off the ferry and straight to the hospital parking garage and straight home after. Absolutely NO THOUGHT of ever going there to spend those precious tourist bucks. Nor L.A. Never L.A. Ick.

Brings back memories of this in Seattle during 1971 – which could easily be adapted for LA: “Will the last legal taxpayer leaving LA turn out the lights” … https://www.historylink.org/File/1287

The Gentle Grizzly | March 8, 2023 at 1:06 pm

Meantime, all over Los Angeles, families of all ethnicities are lifting the phone to call U-Haul, Penske, Budget, PODS, and other outfits to get moved out of there.

Really hard-hit are those of Mexican descent who have families going back to before statehood and before the Treaty. They HATE the illegals.

Much like the free blacks in the North before the redneck black migration to the North after the Civil War. Their assimilated position in society was ripped up..

LA City Council needs to invite Snake Plissken to the dedication.

BierceAmbrose | March 8, 2023 at 3:59 pm

“Sanctuary” from what?

Sanctuary from sanity, they’re already there without needing a proclamation.

E Howard Hunt | March 8, 2023 at 4:49 pm

These people are certainly not undocumented. It is well documented that they fail to possess the documents to be in the country lawfully.

Cheaper to send them to LaLa Land. All aboard Brandon’s Magic Lottery Winner Bus of Free Stuff now boarding at a border near you. You want them, you got them because the rest of America can’t afford this.

Can anyone point out a well-run Hispanic city/country? I don’t know of any and it seems to be their view of the law that causes trouble. It is fungible as long as money is involved or benefits those in power. LA will or is a third-world city now and if it gets any more popular with illegals, will drop below that status. High taxes, poor public services, homeless on the streets, filthy streets and conditions found only in the bowels of Mexico will be the legacy of LA and the city council.

Hope they have at it, and DeSantis sends them plane loads of illegals, busses too
