Arizona Voters Approve Proposition to Give In-State Tuition to Undocumented Students

Ariz. voters approve measure to grant undocumented students in-state tuition
Arizona voters have approved a proposition to grant in-state tuition and financial aid eligibility to all college students who have graduated from a high school in the state, regardless of immigration status.
“The passage of Proposition 308 undoes the passage of Proposition 300, a measure which barred undocumented students from accessing in-state tuition in 2006 and reflects a shifting sentiment on immigration in Arizona,” Arizona Capitol Times reported.
The measure is predicted to win, earning more than 60,000 yes votes over those who voted against it, AZ Central reported.
Opponents of the measure had argued it rewards illegal immigration and gives undocumented students access to a right that should be reserved for U.S. citizens and Arizona residents.
Proponents of the proposition celebrated their victory this week.
Christian Penichet-Paul, director of the Higher Ed Immigration Portal and State Policy, called its approval “a historic achievement that expands access to equal tuition rates to the state’s undocumented students.”
“Arizonans have delivered a resounding message to the nation: undocumented students are and should continue to be integral parts of our communities,” Penichet-Paul said.
The measure was also described by some as a bipartisan effort. Arizona state Sen. Paul Boyer, a Republican, introduced Prop 308 to the legislature in 2021. The state’s Senate and House of Representatives approved it for the ballot.
As The College Fix previously reported, eligible Arizona students must have attended the high school they graduated from for at least two years.
Proposition 308 excludes nonresident aliens, who are families of foreign ambassadors and diplomats, as well as non-citizens with residencies in a foreign nation that they do not intend to abandon.

The history of this is interesting context. Originally, the establishment decided to do this all on its own. In 2006, the people said “stop it.” And like locusts always do, the left just kept coming back and coming back and coming back until they finally won… and now, of course, there will be no attempts allowed by anybody to reconsider the “status quo.”
AZ Capitol Times claims this “reflects a shifting sentiment on immigration in Arizona.” It’s all eyewash. It represents the normal fluctuations of a battle line, which they now pledge to keep from fluctuating any more.
Like recounts: they only occur (repeatedly) until the leftist wins.
AZ ballot initiatives are funded by Californians. I talked to someone who worked in that. It is much cheaper to fund a campaign in AZ than in CA.
The problem with euphemisms is that they interfere with rational thinking. For instance, “undocumented students” really means illegal aliens in this context.
So saying “undocumented students are integral parts of our communities,” is a truism that can be said for any domestic criminals as well. The other part, about “and should continue to be” is a value judgment. Is it appropriate to reward law-breakers with benefits otherwise reserved for lawful citizens of the state? If so, why them and not law-abiding non-residents?
