Ohio State University Issues Warning About Fake Adderall Pills Containing Fentanyl After Two Student Deaths
Two Ohio State University (OSU) students passed away on Thursday and Friday, and the school issued an urgent safety message to the community warning about fake Adderall pills. OSU didn’t release the official cause of death in either case, but the statement announcing the first fatality urged students to “be aware of the possibility of contaminated drugs in our community.” It also said a third student had been hospitalized and then released.
“This morning Columbus Public Health shared an alert about fake Adderall pills, which appear to contain fentanyl, causing an increase in overdoses and hospitalizations,” the safety message said. Adderall is a brand-name mixture of two types of drugs: amphetamines and dextroamphetamines, per the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
It’s often prescribed to people diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but taking Adderall without a prescription has become a problem on college campuses throughout the U.S., according to a 2018 article in the Journal of Undergraduate Neuroscience Education. “The presence of prescription stimulants on college campuses has risen significantly in recent years,” the authors of the article wrote. They explained that many students take Adderall with the hopes it will help them study for longer periods of time, but warned that taking the drug without a prescription can be dangerous.
Like any counterfeit drugs, Adderall accessed without a prescription can be laced with other substances, such as fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that’s up to 100 times stronger than morphine, per the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Wait, college students are in danger because they want to study more? In America? In 2022?

You don’t have to be Asian to want to get somewhere.
They don’t exactly want to study more.
They want a shortcut to the results of studying more.
If they could grind up textbooks, drill a hole in their head, and pour it in with a funnel, they’d be doing that instead.
When you buy pills from an illegal source, they are rarely what the seller says they are, but they usually look like the authentic pills. Now that the Mexican cartels are turning them out by the millions, they look just like the real pills.
In the 1970’s and 1980’s I analyzed many pills from street sources. Back then, the “look-alikes” were fakes for amphetamine or methamphetamine pills. Most of the fakes contained caffeine, lidocaine, and a binder. That made some people mad, but didn’t kill many users.
Now, the cartels are making boatloads of cheap fentanyl from Chinese starting materials. So they mix some in with a binder and press out the pills. But fentanyl isn’t like caffeine or lidocaine. A very small amount can be fatal, and the cartels aren’t careful about how much they mix in.
So it used to be when you bought street drugs, you would usually get ripped off. But now when you take street drugs, there is a good chance you may wake up dead.
