Chicago Area College Launches Degree Program Exclusively for Black Men

Degree program exclusively for Black men launched at Chicago-area college
The Chicago-area Oakton Community College has started an academy exclusively for black men in collaboration with the nearby Evanston Township High School.
The Emory Williams Academy for Black Men, which launches this fall, will provide a two-year academic program that culminates in an associate degree, assistance transferring to a four-year university, or other vocational opportunities.
The program will also offer financial aid, scholarships and “additional financial resources,” its website states. The Daily Northwestern reported it’s a “free degree program for Black, male-identifying locals.”
It will offer students academic pathways in fields such as computer science, marketing, engineering, accounting, law enforcement and criminal justice, business, and cannabis studies.
The academy’s values statement reads in part: “We advance equity by acknowledging the harm perpetrated against Black men by systemic racism in all levels of their education, and intentionally disrupting it here at the College.”
The program’s exclusion of non-Black male candidates does not run afoul of federal guidelines, according to the college.
“The development of the Emory Williams Academy does not violate any laws. Oakton Community College is an open-access institution to which all students are invited to apply, enroll and access services,” spokesman Steve Butera told The College Fix via email.
Mario Borha, Oakton professor and endowed chair of Emory Williams Academy for Black Men, did not respond to The College Fix’s requests for comment.
In a video about the program, he called it a “brotherhood of scholars.”
“…By being exposed to a multitude range of identities, of multiple representations of and manifestations of blackness and maleness, they will see that they are unique and that … while there are others like them, they will also see that there are others not like them, and they will be able to learn from all those experiences,” he said.

The key term here is “male-identifying”
An aspiring student may be a White woman as long as she “identifies” as black male.
This program excludes people based solely on race and gender but there are no equal protection implications? Really? Try offering a program exclusively to white males and exclude everyone else and see what happens.

You ask how it’s legal. I don’t know, but I’ve got a pretty good guess. My guess is that it’s legal because it doesn’t exclude non-black-male candidates. The College Fix article does not quote anything from the college that says it excludes anyone. That’s just College Fix’s assumption. I would bet a small amount that it isn’t actually the case. There have been several such stories in the past where College Fix has jumped to the conclusion that programs intended for blacks must therefore exclude whites, and it turned out not to be true. Usually they just advertise exclusively to blacks, and hope no white people apply; but so long as they would admit qualifying white people if they applied it’s legal.
You’re correct that nothing explicitly says that non-Blacks are excluded, but the name “Emory Williams Academy for Black Men” is a pretty good tip-off that non-black, non-male candidates need not apply.
Then, the first entry on the school’s FAQ is “Who can apply to the Emory Williams Academy for Black Men?” and the answer is “The Academy is designed to support students who identify as a Black male…” would appear to seal the deal.

Actually that language supports my supposition that the program doesn’t discriminate against white applicants. Read it carefully: The question is “Who can apply?”, but the so-called “answer” is “The academy is designed…”. It carefully doesn’t say who can apply, because the true answer is anyone can. They just don’t want you to realize that. But if you haul them into court they will claim that white applicants are treated exactly the same as black ones.
I think this is still illegal, or at least it would be if it were advertising housing or a public accommodation, because it’s designed to steer certain potential customers away. But it’s a closer call than it appears at first glance.

The tuition and costs are free, but the students will qualify for government grants.
I don’t know anything about this program, but I do know children, especially boys, are hurt by growing up without a father in the home. Statistically, 66% of black boys are raised in single parent homes. I am support in a program that will help lift black teen boys and grow them into strong male members of society.
