University in Indiana Displays Free Speech Warning Sign on Campus
“ATTENTION FREE SPEECH BEING EXERCISED AHEAD[.] Topics could be upsetting to some.”
This is what we have come to? Warning signs for free speech? On an unrelated note, can I just say that ‘Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis’ is a ridiculously long and redundant name for a school.
Campus Reform reports:
Free speech warning sign displayed on Indiana campus
A free speech warning sign has been photographed on display, reportedly on Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis campus.
The sign warns students reading “ATTENTION FREE SPEECH BEING EXERCISED AHEAD[.] Topics could be upsetting to some.”
The sign also informs students of options to combat [sic]: “engage in a civil manner, decline respectfully and continue on, [or] alter your route now.”
The photo was shared by the Twitter account @libsoftiktok.
According to the University’s Equity and Inclusion Division, “Indiana University encourages discussion from a variety of different perspectives and viewpoints on all of its campuses… IU will protect, as far as possible, the physical safety of invited speakers, their supporters and protestors without regard to their views or the identity of their sponsors.”
The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education has issued Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis Yellow light rating for its restrictions on student speech.
“Yellow light colleges and universities are those institutions with at least one ambiguous policy that too easily encourages administrative abuse and arbitrary application” explains FIRE.

IUPUI is the school that instituted a separate route to tenure for minorities. Their “DEI Pathway” allows them to give tenure to minorities who would not otherwise qualify for tenure based on their research and teaching. They can be tenured for their “contributions to diversity.”

Most of us in academia call it IUPUI (pronounced eew pooey in my book).
The name is actually not redundant with the exception of the word university.
But yes, they are kinda wokeish and that sucks. However, I’ll be undeservedly optimistic and hope the sign means they will actually commit to allowing free speech as they should.
The chances that the Purdue put up that sign are non-zero but otherwise highly improbable.
The sign was clearly devised by the unwoke who wish to speak without persecution, which is not a university priority.
So now the perpetually outraged know exactly where to go to find something they can demand the administration make go away.
That’s going to work out really well for everyone!
I think this is a wonderful idea, especially since the sign is white (high contrast).
Sane students can contribute to the message by embellishing the sign with grade-school award stickers: rainbows, unicorns, maybe even Big Bird.
Maybe somebody can even print some “outraged NPC” images on label stock.
All federal subsidies to colleges must be cut off NOW until we can figure out how to sanitize them of their Marxist problem.
Step 1: if any government loans AT ALL, only for STEM. You’ll see studies departments closing left and right.
I love the sign. I don’t understand why you object to it. And I’d bet it was not put up by the university, but by the people expressing their unpopular opinions just beyond it.
Purdue University has a great leader in Mitch Daniels. It is not going “woke”, but the main campus is in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Indiana University has its main campus in Bloomington.
Indianapolis is the state capital, and both universities had a branch campus there until 1969, when they merged to form IUPUI. They have a Dental School and a Law School and most of the other components of a research University. They have 19,000 undergrads and 8,400 graduate students. So, academically it is the bastard child of two rival parents.
