HuffPo poll shows 22.8 percent of Americans support their state seceding

HuffPo poll shows 22.8 percent of Americans support their state seceding

With the news that 50 states  now have presented secession petitions on the White House’s “We the People” website, Huffington Post conducted their own poll to determine national support for the idea. Four questions were asked to ascertain 1) awarness of secession, 2) support for secession in general, 3) support for Texas to secede, and 4) support for their own state to secede. Below are the results to the fourth question, “Would you support or oppose >your< state seceding from the United States?”

Strongly support 12.4%
Tend to support 10.4%
Tend to oppose 10.3%
Strongly oppose 41.6%
Not sure 25.3%

These results, which were collected November 14-15 with a sample size of 100, were released at 5:37pm EST Friday under the headline “Secession Poll: Majority Opposes Their State Seceding From The Union,” a technically accurate but somehwhat “minimalist” approach to headline writing.

It seems more than striking–and headline worthy–that 22.4 percent of Americans “strongly” or “tend to” support their state seceding. Coupled with the more than 700,000 signatures that have so far been signed onto various states’ petitions, a case is building for more than the normal post-defeat malaise.

And the White House has announced that they will respond to the secession petitions that meet the 25,000 signature requirement by December 9, when the first qualified petitions (including Texas) expire.

If President Obama thought he had a task to unite the country in 2008, just look at the divisions he’s having to heal in 2012. Forward?

I’m not so sure that I’d sign a petition that was going to this White House on that topic, what with Big Sis and her flegling secret police force.

That having been said, I wholeheartedly support secession.

Suppose the poll worded the question differently: ““Would you support or oppose a getting a 25% increase in your take home pay if it required your state becoming independent from the United States?”

Residents of a state that secedes won’t pay Federal income taxes. And they will pay 18 cents a gallon less for gasoline.

The last time this was tried 600,000 Americans lost their lives and government got a taste of unrestrained power.

Ragspierre in reply to paulejb. | November 17, 2012 at 10:35 am

You DID note the “peacefully” provision in the petitions, right…???

Plus, the actual “last time this was tried” was a lot more recent than that, and resulted in what almost all Americans celebrated…the break-up of the Soviet Union.

Further, we have a tool now that really is new; civil disobedience. And I’m not talking about the Occupy version, which is just mobocracy, but true civil disobedience.

Situation is a bit different. The Federal government is already asserting unrestrained power, and the exercise of it is on the way. And I’m betting that the death toll is already set to be higher than that.

That which cannot continue, will not continue.

Completely different scenario. In that secession, the Union supposedly fought to free the slaves which were the minority of people. In this instance, secession is about freeing 57 million from the oppression of the Federal government.
In its current state, the Union isnt worth saving.

I signed the Texas petition days ago. There’s a good chance that it will have more than a million signatures by the deadline and it qualified on the very first day for a response.

Of course the response will be some lame tra-la-la excuse…

How do you get fractional percents on a sample size of exactly 100?

Did somebody respond that they 40% strongly support, 30% tend to oppose, and 30% not sure?

donb in reply to donb. | November 17, 2012 at 10:55 am

When I look at the published results (at the link) I see that the sample was 1000. However, when I examine the linked details more closely there are still a lot of fractional people. Apparently they are massaging something (the numbers, the pollsters, the respondents, or some combination).

It’s HuffPo. For accuracy, Fox should do the same survey and the results combined with HuffPo and then the mathmaticians should do their voodoo. Still…B.O. is just chuckling at the great unwashed.

Meh, I cannot put much faith in the numbers. Right now it is very easy to say you are in favor of secession, given that it’s likelihood, and the subsequent conflict and hardship, is so remote.

Rather than secession, perhaps we should simply advocate for the fastest and most reliable path to Federal insolvency. Same destination, slightly different journey.

Barack Obama has done everything in his power to divide this country. Once he breaks us down into smaller groups and pits one against the other he wins his takeover. United we stand – Divided we fall.

Ragspierre in reply to donhunt. | November 17, 2012 at 11:49 am

We ARE divided. Deeply and irreconcilably. People who, at base, HATE the Constitution vs. people who do not (which includes a lot of people who don’t have a clue what it means).

The only thing that gives the Federal government any legitimacy is its charter. When, as now, that charter is trashed, you either restore it or you accept there is nothing but “it just growed that way” as a guiding principle of government.

laughnow in reply to donhunt. | November 18, 2012 at 8:01 am

Its already too late to save a true Union. The country is so divided it can never be restored. I would go so far as to say that if 10 Repos saw 10 Demos laying beaten in the road, they would walk by them, letting them die. And vice versa.
War is coming between the producers and the takers. Obama has no capacity to restore the Union because he is for the takers.

Speaking only for myself, that just isn’t true.

I don’t hate at that level. See, if Dirty Filthy Harry Reid was on fire, I WOULD piss on him.

      Call me Mr. Compassion…

“…and of those under 30, nearly 72% thought ‘secede’ was a new brand of condom or a room air freshener. Nearly half of those who chose ‘air freshener’ said they would like to try and smoke it, given the opportunity.”

radiofreeca in reply to TrooperJohnSmith. | November 17, 2012 at 11:31 am

Jeez – talk about out-of-touch: you “huff” air-freshener, you don’t “smoke” it. No wonder Conservatives aren’t connecting with the young – they’re talking the wrong language 🙂

A sample size of 100??!!?? I wouldn’t rely too much on those results.

Being a cynic, I would also wonder exactly how this administration might utilize this convenient list they now have of names and addresses/email. I’m not suggesting paranoia, but this has been the most voracious information collecting WH to date.

CycleCynic in reply to casualobserver. | November 17, 2012 at 2:53 pm

I AM paranoid…and old, which is why I didn’t sign the Texas petition. When I saw WhiteHouse.gov a klaxon echoed in my skull. I didn’t move to the middle of nowhere to play host surprise visits from the politsiya.

Le·gal Se·ces·sion

Reminds me of a blog site…

All we need to do is support secession by a few counties in the San Francisco area and there will never be another Democrat president.

If it comes to it and Liberals permanently ‘sleaze’ control of the federal government, I am in on the secession thing. There is no other country to move to that is fit to live in so it’s a no-brainer.

I’m for anything that acknowledges that we’re at war. This moves that awareness along, I think.

The fatal failing of the GOP is this non-acknowledgment of war. Incredibly, in 2008 after the last 20 years of American politics and the emergence of an immaculately pedigreed Leftist in the form of Barack Obama, McCain and the GOP could not or refused to acknowledge this war. Incredibly beyond any known extreme of human imagination, after the last four years of militant leftism throughout our government and nation, Romney could not acknowledge this war. The GOP continues in the wake of this defeat not to acknowledge this war.

I live in SoCal. I want to secede from my STATE!

As great an idea as secession seems, any move I make is to the right….

I hear you, Paddy. I personally seceded from Massachusetts in 2011 and moved to the (arguably) most independent state in the country… Arizona.

Not even Texas is as free as the Grand Canyon State.

TrooperJohnSmith in reply to VotingFemale. | November 17, 2012 at 1:54 pm

Until enough garbage crosses your left border. You know, the same ones who fu*ked up Washington and Oregon, and starting to be felt in Idaho, Montana, Nevada and even New Mexico. I can’t understand why people leave Cali and then try to bring the same crap with them.

Just last summer, a friend who lets us use his cabin in Montana was the target of some of his new part-time Cali neighbors down at his main residence. They live up the valley from him and tried to get him to stop driving his 4X4 pick-up (which he uses ranching) on the common road. The reason? The tracks are ugly and it gets the roadside vegetation dusty/muddy, depending on the weather. Oh, they also object to the fact they can see his mercury vapor light from their deck (probably whilst smoking bong and sipping Chablis in the hot tub).

Well not to worry. When I make my move, it will probably be to Idaho or Montana, but I will assimilate.

I already drive a truck, wear boots, and all my clothing says Wrangler or Carhartt on it.

I will make a red state still redder….

How about this thought? The petitions are just another underhanded sleasy scheme of the current usurper’s administration in order to put martial law into effect.
Previous schemes like Fast and Furious to abolish 2nd admendment rights, Benghazi scheme to abolish the first admendment rights of free speech, Obamatax scheme to remove religous freedom rights from Catholics and others. Now this scheme to support the tyrant’s pursuit of all power and permanent enslavement. It all is adding up.

It’s not that they want to leave the country. It’s the country that has left them.

The current occupant of the White House announced an agenda of “fundamentally transforming the United States of America,” and a disturbing proportion of Americans went along, again. No wonder that people who actually want to live in America think that will require separating their communities from the anti-America that Obama-Jarrett-Axelrod-Trumka et al. intend to impose.

LMK which states meet the requirements to get the eff out. I’ll pack my uhaul.

There are several reasons I would never support secession. The main one is that if we divide into many small countries or even countries joined by multible states, what would stop Russia from taking us over startig with oil rich Alaska. They are, after all, very close to the furthermost point of Alaska. Then, getting a toehold on this continent, what would stop them from invading these so-called countries one by one. To say nothing of the Balkan countries they could take over without fear of US reprisal. We can’t realistically diminish our power to protect ourselves even though obama is trying hard to do this. Together we stand, separated we fall.

I am all for the east and west coasts setting up their own governments and leaving us the h*ll alone. OTOH, how are California and New York City going to survive without aid from the whole country.

Correction: Northeast coast.
