University of Memphis Offers Professors Financial Incentives to Embed Social Justice in Curricula
“The grant offers a $3,000 stipend (awarded in two installments—$1,500 after completion of the syllabi redesign and $1,500 after teaching the newly designed course)”
The University of Memphis in Tennessee, a public university, is offering professors a cash incentive to infuse their courses with social justice content.
This is going to include concepts related to Critical Race Theory, which we have all been assured is not being taught anywhere.
Matthew Foldi reports at the Washington Free Beacon:
Public University Offers Professors Cash To Go Woke
A public Tennessee university is offering professors financial incentives for “infusing” social justice into their classes.
The University of Memphis told faculty they could collect a $3,000 stipend for redesigning their curricula to align with the university’s commitment to “diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice,” according to an email sent to all faculty obtained by the Washington Free Beacon. The offer is part of the university’s “Eradicating Systemic Racism and Promoting Social Justice Initiative.”
Interested faculty are asked to submit a copy of syllabi to be reworked as well as a 500-word “narrative” on their “diversity, equity, and inclusion philosophy” and how the new lessons will “address disparities” in their subject area.
The University of Memphis’s offer is part of a growing trend on college campuses, where the overt promotion of social justice has become the new norm. At Ohio’s Kenyon College, a small liberal arts school, professors can no longer receive tenure unless they can demonstrate “promotion of an inclusive classroom environment that values diversity.”
The email that Foldi mentions above makes the program quite clear:
Infusing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice into Existing Courses/Curriculum
The Eradicating Systemic Racism and Promoting Social Justice Initiative at the University of Memphis is offering an opportunity for interested faculty to critically consider methods and approaches to redesign existing courses housed within their departments to better advance the tenets and charge of the University’s commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice…
Beginning in the Spring 2022 semester, 15-20 faculty members will be selected to serve as the first cohort of Curriculum: Infusing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice into Existing Courses/Curriculum Redesigners/Developers.
The grant offers a $3,000 stipend (awarded in two installments—$1,500 after completion of the syllabi redesign and $1,500 after teaching the newly designed course), opportunities for extensive pedagogical and theoretical training and workshop experiences, summer course development and workshop sessions, and both pre-conference and University-wide post-conference presentation in which course redesign faculty will present and share their strategies, foci and best practices and approaches to focused course redesign.
You can read all about the school’s “Eradicating Systemic Racism and Promoting Social Justice Initiative” on their website.
This is political indoctrination, plain and simple. Are taxpayers in Tennessee really OK with this?

I’m sure the fact that the left is resorting to obvious bribery to push their agenda means something…
Disgusting, so sick of the poor me mentality of the blacks
The Irish made it despite discrimination. No affirmative action.

The blacks have quotas, set-asides, race-normed test scores, the badges and guns of government to enforce anti-discrimination laws, and all manner of welfare programs yet… they whine, snivel, yell, threaten, and commit violence because most of them – when the truth is acknowledged – haven’t the intelligence or drive to make it on their own. They still need “massah”.
And my copy-paste-edit efforts didn’t work.
/preview is my friend.
Ah come on, admit it. You just love Irish. And your favorite color is green.
Well, the Irish did have it pretty tough.
“Pretty tough” is an understatement. There were literally signs in windows for job openings with “Irish need not apply.” My Irish grandfather became a steel worker in Pennsylvania because that was all the work he could get when he emigrated here, despite being a trained physician (sadly, this is still true for many professionals who legally emigrate to America; they can’t work in their fields, so they work at Walmart or whatever–we need immigration reform, but not the open borders crap the left babbles about).
The Irish were treated like third class citizens from the moment they hit these shores (we were also enslaved not just by the British but by a variety of Caribbean and other nations, traded and treated like property). Do you hear me wailing about my “reparations”? No. And you never will because America is great, and the only way out of such treatment is to work hard and earn your place, to show your worth, to do good and to be good.
Perhaps we should start demanding reparations. Hey while they’re giving money out, why be one of the few groups excluded? My ancestors came here to work hard and succeed, not to be saps.
Plus, they’ve been here a lot longer than any of the other immigrant waves named above.
Memphis is a very heavily populated black city
So thinking they are OK with this
I am surprised that the University of Memphis didn’t just order faculty to include CRT.
You can bet there will be a subsequent review of who “accepted” the offer and who didn’t. And then a purge of those who didn’t, if any.
I’d accept the first $1,500, then never teach the new course.
Hey, their rules.
You just have to submit the syllabus, not teach it, so yeah, I suspect there’s going to be a lot of that going on.
They make you go to racial re-education too, it sounds like, which allows them to pay the racial consultants ten times what they pay the faculty.
That would go against their academic freedom. But this allows them to say stuff they don’t believe, voluntarily. Every prostitute has their price; what’s theirs?
Maybe they should include a course on Basic Morality—you know, things you don’t learn at home such as the difference between right and wrong. Emphasize that murder, theft and violence are not appropriate in civilized society.
Maybe another course on Responsibility 101 and Restoring the Work Ethic in Ethnic Culture.
Anyone else wondering where the devil is the Tennessee State Legislature on this?
State houses have to start fighting back against indoctrination on all levels.
“Interested faculty are asked to submit a copy of syllabi to be reworked as well as a 500-word “narrative” on their “diversity, equity, and inclusion philosophy” and how the new lessons will “address disparities” in their subject area.”
So this is a de facto “post hiring diversity statement” designed to round up or force the resignation/retirements of already hired faculty.
Do you have to show your vaccination card at the same time?
