Elite Winsor Girls School In Boston Moving Away From Calling Girls “Girls”

Elite Winsor Girls School In Boston Moving Away From Calling Girls “Girls”

Winsor DEI Plan: “External publications and communications have moved away from using ‘she, her, hers’’ and ‘your daughter,’ replacing the former with ‘they, them, theirs’ and the latter with ‘student’ …. Faculty and staff are discouraged from addressing groups of students as ‘girls’ and ‘ladies.’”

“Empowering girls to lead lives of purpose” is featured on The Winsor School home page.

The elite Boston private school is a mainstay atop of national rankings. Almost one-third of Winsor graduates go on to attend Ivy League universities. Tuition is $53,900 per year.

The slide show on the home page begins showing pictures of girls in grades 5-12 walking around Winsor’s beautiful and cozy Boston campus. Another picture displays a young girl reading material from her MacBook in an academic lounge and continues with pictures of a few girls studying in classrooms or working in what appears to be a science lab.

There’s a picture showing the recently crowned 2021 New England championship winning field hockey team. Everything about Winsor’s website presentation is embodied in that homepage message, “Empowering girls to lead lives of purpose.”

Winsor is an all-girls school. Why? The answer is found in the school’s Strategic Vision: “The Winsor School’s mission is to educate girls to be intellectually curious, motivated, and generous-minded.”  Mary Pickard Winsor started the private all-girls Boston school in 1886. She wrote the message in the school’s graduate directory, “if women are in these days to be self-respecting they must also have it within their power to be self-supporting.” Her vision was pure and logical.  The purpose of all-girls education is, and has always been, to raise women to be self-sustaining while also allowing themselves to become confident in who they are as women.

The efficacy of Miss Winsor’s vision has been asserted by a variety of studies.  UCLA social scientist Linda Sax writes that a “majority of girls’ school grads report higher self-confidence over their coed peers.”  They also transform into competitive, confident human beings that are comfortable using their femininity to lead in prestigious careers.  The Goodman Research Group, a Boston consulting group, found that “Girls’ school grads are 6 times more likely to consider majoring in math, science, and technology compared to girls who attend coed schools.”

Now that pragmatic and confident vision for girls is under threat by language in The Winsor School’s DEI Plan, Lift Every Voice,” released this past fall:

“Although Winsor remains in its mission a school for “young women to pursue their aspirations and contribute to the world,” the school recognizes the importance of inclusive language.”

The plan goes on to say that “[e]xternal publications and communications have moved away from using “she, her, hers’’ and “your daughter,” replacing the former with “they, them, theirs” and the latter with “student” (emphasis added):

Although Winsor remains in its mission a school for “young women to pursue their aspirations and contribute to the world,” the school recognizes the importance of inclusive language. Winsor has, for example, adopted changes to its use of gendered language and pronouns to be more inclusive. External publications and communications have moved away from using “she, her, hers’’ and “your daughter,” replacing the former with “they, them, theirs” and the latter with “student.” Sensitivity is also paid to family structure. In Admission, for example, interviews are now called the “Adult family member interview” instead of the “Parent/guardian interview.” Faculty and staff are discouraged from addressing groups of students as “girls” and “ladies,” and teachers address students by their preferred pronouns.

*For a specific example of how a specific department is addressing inclusive language, consult the appendices.

The referenced Appendix C provides specific examples of how degendered language already is in use and being implemented at Winsor (emphasis added):

Faculty and staff are discouraged from addressing groups of students as “girls” and “ladies,” and teachers are more regularly in the practice of asking students privately about their preferred pronouns. The Athletics department is revising its handbook to instruct coaches to avoid addressing student athletes in gender binary ways.

Departments have worked together to ensure that inclusive language exists in course materials created by the teacher. The English Department has agreed to a policy that prohibits the use of hateful language in any context. As stated in the Class I course description, “At times, our texts may contain racialized or hurtful language towards particular marginalized groups. Even if it is printed in our texts, we will not speak any hateful language in our classroom. Discussions are planned carefully, with a focus on understanding historical context and the role of antiracism, and they are handled in developmentally appropriate ways.” The department has also decide change the grammar curriculum and writing assessment criteria to accept “they” as a singular pronoun.

As another example, the science department lab and eye safety letter was updated to include nongendered language. All science faculty are encouraged to do so in course policies and expectations as well as any other course documents.

In Advancement, every publication is considered through a DEI lens. A few examples include sensitivity and understanding around marketing materials, posters, website images, publications like the Bulletin, donor appeals, volunteer handbooks, event invitations, etc.

Consistent with the DEI Plan, in recent school communications I obtained, the school avoids calling girls ‘girls’, instead  calling them ‘students’ or ‘children.’

On its website, however, Winsor continues to promote the school as for “girls,” showing that the school still wants the reputational benefits of being labeled an “all-girls” school, as internally it seeks to do away with “girls” as a term.

There are many issues with trying to degender the language used at Winsor, starting with the fact that it now undermines the very point of an all-girls’ school.

Forget, for a moment, the obvious question about whether the use of inclusive language, including transgender pronouns, logically means the school should start admitting biological men (other “all-girls” institutions have now done just that).  We don’t have to even go that far to see where this road towards “inclusivity” will likely lead.

Let’s talk about the building of self-confidence of girls as girls.  One of the motivations of Mary Pickard Winsor to start an all-girls’ school was the feeling that women needed to find an environment independent of the prejudice and condescension of female talents that had pervaded her time.  That motivation is carried over today, with the current President Sarah Pelmas noting that “We’re in a world where girls and women are still fighting for so many things.”

Instead of trying to make a murky mess of “de-gendering” Winsor, why not draw upon the vast literature of social science that has studied girls’ achievement and teaching practices related specifically to the needs of women and implement those practices instead?

Winsor School’s DEI Plan and determination to blur the school’s central mission should raise concern for every reasonable parent who wishes to send their daughter to a school truly committed to engendering the kind of self-respecting, empowered woman they hope to raise at an all-girls school.  The school’s Board should consider long and hard whether they truly want the school to go in this direction.

You are on to something. All of this is a cult that weaves a blanket of bullshit and lies to rationalize untruth. It’s all foritified with feel-good platitudes “inclusivity”, “equity”, and whatever rose-colored glasses crap out of their ignorant mouths.

It needs to stop. Hit them where it hurts and stop giving them your time and money for starters.

The school is a total waste of money and time. Sounds like pants suits are the school uniform and mental robots are the school products.

Man, you couldn’t be more wrong. Twenty years ago I spent half a year at Winsor filling-in teaching chemistry. My students were smart, inquisitive, and aggressive when it came to their education, Who gives a rat’s ass what they want to call themselves?

        Hollymon–back then girls were “girls.”

LaborShortage in reply to Hollymon. | December 17, 2021 at 7:30 am

Hollymon – Great to hear there might still be a place with the ability to motivate young people. Hopefully that hasn’t changed yet. But it’s not about what the young people want to call themselves, it’s about the idiotic language contortions employed the woke ‘adult administrative staff members’

That’s the smart thing to do. There is no reason to call girls girls when there is so many other things to call them.

      CALL THEM HOSTAGES

They are forced to pretend that this is all okay. To cheer on the sidelines as FAKE WOMEN get into their schools, lockers, bathrooms and win all the awards at female competitions.

Women are not allowed to object. Many women do not want to appear out of step with the latest radical liberal ideas.

Compliance Enforcement is BRUTAL. They say “Cheer for us – or your a Trans Hater and we will get you”. Cheer for the undermining of women and relating your self and your sisters to 2nd class status.

It is coercive. It is destructive. It’s like prisoners in the gulag who have to cheer their guards at they beat and kill fellow inmates.

This is oppression. This is bullying.

Were… They’re all lefty indoctrinated now. All the prep schools that feed to Ivy league are going to be that way on the “left” coast. Expect to see transitioned men being admitted soon in the name of leftists ideology.

WAR ON WOMEN CONTINUES

A man who thinks he is a woman is more important to the Woke than an ACTUAL WOMAN.

.003% of people think they are the opposite sex. The woke demand that the other 99,997% of people change their culture, language and lives to make this small group feel better.

They gladly will sacrifice women’s sports, woman/girls schools, woman’s safety, woman’s dignity – and demand that you do the same — or else they will cancel you – ruin your life – get you fired from your job.

Feminists are most absent as these attacks on women continue — and escalate. Shows they care more about political games than ACTUAL women’s rights. They are phonies.

Worse – they have brainwashed girls into thinking that they have to accept 2nd class status. They must accept the believe that – a man claims to be a woman and wins every swimming competition – its because women are just not good enough. Fake women are better.

And the dignity of women is degraded by call them “menstrators” – but, of course, the woke need the term “woman” to apply to men who claim to be a woman because we do not want to hurt their feels.

Even George Orwell himself could not predict such a demented and insane direction for society.

I hope the psychological impact of acknowledging that the fastest swimmer is someone who was born as a man, and still has all the male parts and not female ones, won’t damage the self esteem of the girls who could not have beaten the fastest girls either.

I’m a guy, and whether Usain Bolt wins the sprint or not, in either case I, like 99.999% of men, would never have even been qualified to enter the race. I don’t gain self esteem by Usain Bolt’s accomplishments in running.

As for the few girls who could have won the race that the transgender won, let’s acknowledge what this is. They were lucky by the old category definitions. It wasn’t about height, or weight, or hair color, but about sex. Now there’s an expansion to “gender”. They’re no longer top. Oh well, now someone else is.

LaborShortage in reply to artichoke. | December 17, 2021 at 7:40 am

Artichoke – It’s not about the tiny percentage of women who might be able to win at a world-class level. It’s about the vast majority of women who will have no chance when competing against even a mediocre biological male. Title 9 was put in place specifically to give women an equal opportunity to excel in sports.

artichoke in reply to LaborShortage. | December 17, 2021 at 8:11 am

But as I showed above, that vast majority of women wasn’t going to win anyway against the top athletic women.

And bringing up Title 9 makes it look even worse. Look at the damage done to men by the arbitrary tribunals set up under Obama’s “Dear Colleague” regime, justified by Title 9. If it can be twisted to that we must throw the whole thing out and start over. Women’s sports isn’t nearly important enough to put up with star chamber tribunals.

AnAdultInDiapers in reply to Ben Kent. | December 16, 2021 at 3:35 pm

    I challenge your .003%

People with what has historically been classified as gender disphoria, who have genuine issues and aren’t masking a mental disorder or illness of some form are around the 0.003% (or maybe higher) level.

The number of twitter clowns pretending they’re special and have a gender that doesn’t match their ‘assigned at birth’ sex are far far higher. That they’re wrong doesn’t meant they don’t exist.

It also means that while not pandering to them, we shouldn’t recognise and help the people who are genuinely struggling.

I don’t suffer gender dysphoria but I’ve had a lodger who does, and it’s not something they chose for themself. They’d much rather have been able to live a traditional gender role.

Historically about 0.001% to 0.003% of people have a condition in which they feel they were born in a body with the wrong sex.

SHOCK — Nearly 20% say they are transgender or think they may be transgender in the 10th grade of a NYC high school that my kid attends.

      TWENTY PERCENT.
This is the result of years of influence by NYC peers and NYC school staff who push kids to consider that they “might” be gay or bi or trans.

It’s cool to be trans – your difference – your special. People pay attention to you. Teachers and Administrators will not mess with you. Yes, there are now societal advantages to being trans. 10 years ago it was considered a serious mental or medical disorder – now it is encouraged.

My point is – there is likely still today only 0.001% to 0.003% that are actually trans. The rest are a form of social hysteria / brainwashing BUT in a way that could cause lasting harm to those affected.

The Trans movement want more people to identify as trans. They do not care who get harmed by it. They are just collateral damage to advance their agenda.

I’m not anti-trans. But I am against people who promote gender issues and who use trans to bully others.

Ben Kent in reply to Ben Kent. | December 16, 2021 at 4:20 pm

CLARIFICATION — It’s nearly 20% of GIRLS in the NYC H.S. class who say they believe they are – or should be – a male. I do not know what percent of BOYS in the class say they want to be female. Given historical trends – there typically are more boys that want to be female.

artichoke in reply to Ben Kent. | December 16, 2021 at 8:38 pm

THIS is the reason to oppose the trans agenda. Because they’re recruiting and grooming. This is real permanent damage. It’s a crime.

But I have no sympathy for the “women’s sports” reason. I don’t care about women’s sports. I don’t really care about sports, but women’s sports is even less important because it’s not open competition, but an arbitrary affirmative action category. Why that category but no others? There’s no special league for short people or uncoordinated people. So I don’t care about women’s sports, and it’s quite an unimportant objection. A distraction in my mind from the real and terrible problem of destroying people’s only possible real sexuality before they even grow into it.

The elite Boston private school is a mainstay atop of national rankings. Almost one-third of Winsor graduates go on to attend Ivy League universities. Tuition is $53,900 per year.

But can they read and write? “Elite” these days means worker-than-thou and expensive so that the uncouth riffraff can’t get in, and nothing to do with intelligence and ability.

At any rate, soon the school will be admitting DIDs (Dudes In Dresses). Let’s see how many rich lefty parents want their daughter rooming and showering with a “girl” hung like a horse.

Parents agree?

TRANS PAINT ANY OPPOSITION AS “HATE”

People do not hate those who are trans. But all the trans go ballistic when faced with ANY opposition.

The truth is – people are opposed to UNFAIRNESS. It is unfair for .003% to bully the other 99.997% of people who are not trans. Having people change their behavior or language to accommodate YOU or impeding on women’s rights – is really just BULLYING.

Imagine if the tallest .003% forced you to accommodate them ? That means people over 6 foot 7 inches. Imagine if you were forced to wear stilts so that the extremely tall would not feel bad and would not have to constantly be bending down to talk to you. You would think it’s nuts and would object. BUT then they call you Height Biased – You HATE tall people – they attack you – bully you. Get you fired. When really – you just think its unfair.

So, why should only the .003% of people who call themselves trans get accommodation ? Why not every small group ? The tallest, the shortest, the skinny, the obese . . . etc . . .

Its time to just call them out — THEY ARE SELFISH BULLIES.

Really, this extreme issues was pushed by special interests to divert attention. They surely never thought it would have gone so far and been so effective as it has been. If you want to change policy or culture – you put out an extreme position as a red herring to make the actual changes you want seem really normal.

The Friendly Grizzly | December 16, 2021 at 9:48 am

I wonder what the parents will think of this? I mean, these are all Good Families, you know! (Good Family: New England, Protestant, Old Money, 12th generation or more.)

I am sure the girls will still be taught the protocols of table-settings, how to deal with “the help”, how to recognize those who “don’t belong”, and how to be discrete when they “pair off” with the desirable studs at the country club dances.

Morning Sunshine | December 16, 2021 at 9:49 am

I attended a women’s college, accidentally (they gave me the best financial aid package). It was the most amazing experience of my life. I blossomed like I had never dreamed; for the first time I had female friends with whom I was NOT in competition, but collaboration. I have the confidence now to be the only one standing on my side of the idea (like the time I had the “cajones” to call Mitt Romney a carpetbagger – to his face at a small county delegate meeting). I credit my confidence, my continuing-education, my skills, my experiences to Wells College.

I would love to see public schools separate by gender from 5-8 grades, even through high school if desired. I have become a HUGE advocate for gender separated education.

The Friendly Grizzly in reply to Morning Sunshine. | December 16, 2021 at 10:02 am

Regarding grade and high school, I agree with you 100%. If nothing else, it gets the raging-hormone issue out of the way.

So, a segregationist at heart. Cool.

Agree. It’s good for boys too. They still allow women-only colleges, but they don’t allow men-only colleges, and that is massively unfair.

Sultan in reply to artichoke. | December 16, 2021 at 3:04 pm

They also not only allow but celebrate black-only colleges (the “HBCU’s”) and we cannot even contemplate whites only colleges.

The Friendly Grizzly in reply to Sultan. | December 16, 2021 at 3:59 pm

Strict admission standards would take care of most of that. Not offering styrofoam majors would take care of most of the remainder.

The Friendly Grizzly in reply to Sultan. | December 16, 2021 at 7:03 pm

They may celebrate them, but they don’t attend them.

artichoke in reply to Sultan. | December 18, 2021 at 7:56 pm

HBCU’s are not black-only except by self selection, with which I have no problem. But white people do get admitted if they apply. They don’t even seem to face an affirmative-action disadvantage, from the stories I’ve seen. I saw one video of a white boy who was elected student president of his dorm at Morehouse. Why? He was generally popular, and I suppose if there are 10 black candidates and 1 white, and 20% of voters think it would be interesting to have a white dorm president, he can win a plurality.

Back in Macon, Georgia in the 60’s… high schools were same sex… but for racial reasons. That said, there won’t be any competition in college now as the campuses are too dangerous for males and the few that attend will be either extremely studious, scared or deep beta.

It’s pretty obvious that they will be practicing selective inclusivity.

But, hey, it’s a private business. If they survive then another thing that’s obvious is that the will need to have enough willing paying participants.

BTW, LIF’s list of topics today is enough to make some folks go back to bed or be a couch potato until it’s time to go back to bed again.

Equality challenges power, and equity protects it.

Just shut up because I’m not equipped to have this argument!

The left makes people live in fear.

“inclusive language”
It’s not at all “inclusive”; it excludes all normal people.

Now “parents and guardians” isn’t inclusive enough of family structures? What are some other ones? Do they have free-range students with neither parents nor guardians, in heavily court-supervised Massachusetts? Are they planning to admit adult students?

Sacrificing their children

What utter BS!
Unfortunately, this same insanity has crossed the Pond and has infected Great Britain too.

We can complain and argue about this all we want, but they don’t care. The indoctrination continues no matter what we say and, at the end of the day, that’s what really matters. The fundamental change of our country is happening in full view.

Silliness at $53,000/yr. Are there any adults at this school? Maybe instead of they as a singular pronoun , how about non-birthing persons or would it be un-birthing persons. Can anyone hep me with this??

If I had been considering either a donation or sending my daughter to this school, THAT ridiculous decision would have ENDED it ! The founder of this prestigious school wanted REAL WOMEN to go there, NOT fake women, AKA “Boys who THINK they are women” ! To call real women anything OTHER than women is ludicrous. STOP the wokeness !

Makes perfect sense. If Windsor wants all their “thems” to thrive in the Ivy League world, have a good command of pronouns and be able to choose a culturally appropriate Halloween costume, they’d better get the thems ready.

What will the school do when a non-penile person’s preferred pronouns are “she/her/hers”?

AF_Chief_Master_Sgt | December 17, 2021 at 3:33 pm

Privileged “girls” with vaginas have no right to discriminate against “girls” with cocks.

It’s about time that these overly privileged coddled woMEN get their comeuppance from real WOMEN, those girls with cocks who have experienced true oppression.

Girls with cocks are expected to still work jobs that are inherently more dangerous than the office and soft jobs that girls with vaginas are expected to do.

/s

“The purpose of all-girls education is, and has always been, to raise women to be self-sustaining while also allowing themselves to become confident in who they are as women. ”

Not exactly the kind of nurturing that would make them attractive to men later on, is it? But then again, maybe that’s the goal in the first place.

Such creatures are evolutionarily selected to remove their genes from the pool.

I also remember cartoonist Jeff Shesol, who specialized in skewing PC thinking, calling such girls “pre-womyn”.

I suppose nowadays girls are basically just post-op boys.
