Rashida Tlaib Wants Taxpayers to Pay Off Student Loan Debts, Including Hers
“Tlaib makes $174,000 a year as a member of Congress.”
Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) wants taxpayers to pay off all existing student loan debt, including her own outstanding law school debt.
As a member of Congress, Tlaib earns $174,000 a year. That’s $14,500 per month, yet somehow she just can’t get her student loans paid.
Alec Schemmel of KOMO News notes that Tlaib just emboldened critics:
Rashida Tlaib mistakenly makes case against federal student loan forgiveness, critics say
Critics are slamming comments made by Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., arguing her complaints about her student loan debt proves federal bailouts would benefit the rich.
“I worked full time, Monday through Friday, and took weekend classes to get my law degree. And still, close to $200,000 in debt. And I still owe over $70,000 and most of it was interest,” Tlaib said during oral arguments on the House floor. “And guess what? I didn’t go to the for-profit entities, I went to legal aid, I worked at the nonprofit organization fighting for the right to breathe clean air, to fight for the worker that was getting their wage taken and stolen from their employer. I went and worked on immigrant rights and so much more,” she continued.

Jazz Shaw of Hot Air vaporizes Tlaib’s argument:
All of this whining about her outstanding debt falls apart quickly under the least bit of scrutiny. Tlaib’s salary is squarely in the middle of the top 8% of American households in terms of annual income. Yes, that’s correct. She’s part of the dreaded “top ten percent” that Democrats love to squawk about when arguing in favor of taxing the rich. If anyone should be able to keep up with their loan payments, she’s certainly a prime candidate.
Further, Tlaib sought to glorify herself for having gone to work in lower-paying jobs for non-profit organizations after graduating. But when a person who is that far in debt chooses such a career path, that’s their own individual choice. She had a law degree from a well-regarded university and law school. She should have easily been able to find better-paying work in the private sector so she could take care of her obligations and then move on to more altruistic fields once she was financially stable.
Tlaib has also gotten roasted on Twitter:
For almost four years, Rep. Tlaib has been making an annual salary of $174,000 as a House member. But she wants the rest of us to chip in to pay off her law degree.
Coincidentally she made one of the best cases against using taxpayer dollars to pay off student loans. https://t.co/AMSkoifdQm

She's a perfect example of why we shouldn't forgive student loans. She makes 175,000 a year and wants the tax payer to assume her debts? No, pay your bills you deadbeat. Student loan forgiveness is upper class welfare. https://t.co/mdOgX5ylkN

My position on this issue has not changed. Half of America is not even welcome on college campuses. Until that changes, I don’t even want to hear about this.

She is the poster child for NOT using taxpayer money to pay off student loans.
The irony!
She has a law degree and still cannot reason. Tlaib was a terrible investment.
But more than this, her self-awareness is zero. She has absolutely no idea how most Americans would obviously react to someone like her being the poster child on this issue.
Nothing like payouts to the rich. Face it poor kids don’t rack up 100k in college debt ., they go to cheaper schools. This is a payoff to the donor class.
Poor kids often pay nothing at a great many colleges, particularly if they check the right box.
exactly! My family was so poor that I was able to go to a small private college – an 80k price tag 25 years ago (50k a year currently) for less than 20 out of pocket and loans combined. It was cheaper there for me because of my family than it would have been for a state school out of pocket.
oh, and I had my loans paid off within 5 years because I got a job that paid me.
I strung my payments out to the letter of the schedule because at 1% interest, during the Jimmy Carter years of bank accounts paying 15%, I would have been an idiot not to. Plus, carrying the paper debt actually improved my FICO score (hey, I didn’t write those rules).
That’s right — I’m so old that I remember when the Democrats would have handled this issue in a straightforward manner — having Congress appropriate tax money to build official, government-run re-education camps, giving them an actual line-item presence in the budget… instead of co-opting the existing school administrators and then paying them off for their “government service” through the backdoor with a plan like this.
She’s a pig at the trough.
And away from it too.
I don’t make as much money as Rashida Tlaib. I don’t have as much in student loan debt though it’s still substantial. If the government paid off student loans, I would benefit quite a bit.
But I don’t see any reason why other people should have to pay my debts. I made the choices, The benefit, as well as the burden, is entirely mine.
Rashida Tlaib is a leech and should be treated as such.
Problem is the gov’t nationalized student loans and made them non-dischargable.
Uni’s can charge as much as they want because the government will lend students near unlimited amounts of money for anything.
Ultimately this is about transferring tax payer money to the universities through burdening students with unplayable loans.
If they want “student loan forgiveness” they can take it out of the universities who robbed them blind for a bill of goods.
“Uni’s can charge as much as they want because the government will lend students near unlimited amounts of money for anything. Ultimately this is about transferring tax payer money to the universities through burdening students with unpayable loans.”
Bingo.
Ok but I need answers
1. Only current student debt or also future student debt?
2. Only for those who selfishly chose ideologically driven career paths instead of paying their debt or do those who paid their student loans off prior to indulging partisan activities get $ as well?
3. How will this increase or maintain the value of the GI bill as a recruiting and retention tool for the armed forces?
4. How will those of us who extended their service obligations to qualify for the post 9/11 GI bill be compensated?
5. How do convince blue collar folks who successfully adult with a trade school education by working with their hands to support paying for your mistakes?
IOW, not only no but hell no. If someone runs up $200K in student debt, which can’t be discharged in a bankruptcy, to obtain a PHD in 15th century French Feminist literature then can’t find a job outside retail or *bucks …..that’s life. Choices matter, actions have consequences.
Medical school debt when I started practicing was $237,000. That’s a lot of debt.. I pay on it every month. I’ve got ten more years to go. I chose the career, I chose the school, and I incurred the debt. It was worth it.
There’s a simple answer. Don’t pick degrees that won’t let you make a living. Don’t pick a school where the value of the degree is below the cost to obtain it. Don’t study stupid sh*t and expect other people to pay for it.
And don’t take a low paying job because it makes you feel like a good person, then complain that the pay wasn’t enough to easily handle the debt you voluntarily incurred.
Exactly. The DoD has a program to help pay off student loan debt in exchange for 6 to 8 years of service. Lots of programs exist for health care professionals to discharge student loan debt through service.
SHE HATES THE TOP 10% (the wealthy)
>> So does she hate herself ?
Funny how so many so called “socialists” have high incomes and assets. Look at Bernie Sanders.
>> Why don’t they start the socialist path by giving all they $$ to the needy ? Lead by example. No ?
My wife and I paid $800 a month on her student loans when I was a substitute teacher and my wife was a waitress. If we can, anybody can. Pay your damn debts.
I got my undergraduate degree without student loans. Military tuition assistance helped. When my son was born, I started a Roth IRA to fund his education. In a few months, he’ll graduate with an MBA in Accounting and his CPA (and a 4.0 GPA, yes, I’m very proud of him), all (undergrad and graduate school) with no student debt because we paid for it as he went. Nobody said it was easy, but it can be done with planning and some hard work.
All these socialist proposals do is transfer responsibility for the loan to people who never asked for it, never agree to it, and never benefited from it. All to buy votes for Democrats with taxpayer dollars.
Vile and ugly Muslim supremacist, Jew-hater and terrorist-sympathizer, Tlaib, represents the quintessence of Dhimmi-crat arrogance, narcissism, entitlement and obnoxious self-reverence:
“Oh, look at me — I’m such a virtuous, self-sacrificing martyr, reaping a generous six-figure, taxpayer-paid salary, and, having attended law school, part-time!”
What an utterly noxious, miserable and useless harridan this despicable twit, is. A perfect representative for the pathologies of the Dhimmi-crat Party, at-large.
But for two people – Jeff Sessions and William Barr – the likes of this maggot, along with Omar, would have been tossed from Congress because of DOJ investigations.
But for those two people.
DOJ investigations into what? Do you have any information that either she or Omar committed an offense that would have persuaded two-thirds of the House to vote to expel her? Especially with a majority of that House being Democrat, and the very long-standing Congressional understanding that the House may only expel a member for an offense committed during that term?
I want my loan from 89 forgiven and returned.
I want my house loan forgiven…
I want my car loan forgiven…
Credit cards forgiven…
Dental bills forgiven…
Grocery bills forgiven…
And throw in a pack of bubble gum as well.
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz,
my friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends …
If she’s so poor, why is she so fat?
i want her executed for treason and think i have a better chance of getting my wish than she does of getting hers.
Unfortunately no. Both outcomes should be extremely unlikely, but given political pressure she may actually get her wish, while to get your wish she’d first have to actually commit treason, and then also admit it or be seen by two witnesses to an overt act. That’s not likely to happen. More’s the pity.
Yes, she is a “burden” h/t Obama. However, execution is cruel and unusual. Abortion a.k.a. Planned Politicianhood (PP) is a humane alternative.
Me? Pay the student loan debt of other people?
No … bloody … way.
she should demand a refund. She clearly didn’t learn anything in college.
Thanks for this thoroughly enjoyable article!
If her education was so flawed that she cannot discern the problems with her argument, then why would anybody be interested in paying for it?
On the other hand, she may be making a dishonest, but practical, bet that a significant number of fools will buy her argument out of their own financial interests.
How is it they when SHE doesn’t want to pay her debt, which she took on knowingly and received the benefits from, that makes her a victim, but when *I* don’t want to pay her debt, which I did not consent to and for which I received no benefit, I’m a heartless jerk?
She is the prototypical leftist grifter. Me, me, me. I am a victim. You people need to pay. The only reason this terrorist loving, jew hating shrew sits in Congress is because the bottom feeders she represents think exactly as she does…..where is my free $$hit?
I’m playing sob music on my full-sized cello. Hubris.
If you don’t think your education was worth what you paid for it, then why would anyone else think it was worth paying for?
If a college degree usually enhances lifetime earnings then why, exactly, should those who do not have one pay for those who do?
Choice (progressive returns, but not a wicked solution), reward (“baby”), debt (“burden”). Evaluate the risk, benefit, and proceed accordingly.
People… persons harmed by Diversity, Inequity, and Exclusion (DIE) policy, should be compensated. People who worked, through their degree in order to mitigate shared/shifted responsibility, should be compensated. Moms who stayed home with their children, while dad worked, and together balanced their budget, should be compensated. Progressive prices and availability are a universal harm.
Can’t she simply earn extra money to pay off her loans by using her face to make Gorilla cookies?
When the POS oblama STOLE the Student Loans I posted that this would cause a sky rocket of costs. They were already way too high and his illegal actions simply lit a few more fuses! I worked my way through college way back in the early 70’s. At first it was just part time but the last two and a half years it was full time second shift in a manufacturing plant. All I knew was school, work, sleep, school, work, sleep! I stayed at home and drove 30 miles each way every day for four and a half years. I owed $800 from my first semester! I was making an average of $2.00 per hour back then! I paid mine! I’ve advocated for eliminating the student loan program! Let the universities with the BILLION$ in trusts finance students who are good risks! There are grants that help poor, DESERVING students! Eliminate all the DEI or is it DIE deadwood and the costs come down! Eliminate “professors” who get $200k for “teaching” two classes and the costs come down! Put the universities and colleges back into the EDUCATION BUSINESS! If you have a loan – PAY IT!
