Biden’s Lack of Response to Cuba Threatens Democrats’ Future Election Prospects in Florida
“I was expecting something more forceful than just sanctioning Cuban officials who don’t travel to the U.S. anyway”
The protests in Cuba have drifted off the media’s radar screen, but not for the people of Cuba or their supporters in the United States.
In Florida in particular, there is tremendous support for the Cuba protests. Biden’s lack of action could cost the Democrats there in the short and long terms.
The Hill reports:
Cuba fallout threatens Biden’s prospects in Florida
Political strategists are warning that President Biden risks losing Florida again in 2024 if he doesn’t step up his response to Cuba following this summer’s historic protests on the communist island.
Biden has met with Cuban American leaders, instituted harsher sanctions on the Cuban government, and is now exploring ways to possibly restore internet access in Cuba, but experts say he still risks losing ground to Republicans on the issue.
Cuban Americans, many of whom turned out for former President Trump in November, are entering their fifth week of protests in Florida to voice their opposition to the government in Havana. If Biden wants to win them over three years from now, strategists say, he will need to take a different approach toward Cuba…
The White House announced on Wednesday that Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas will travel to Miami next week to speak about Biden’s commitment to the protesters in Cuba and his solidarity with Cuban Americans in Florida.
The reason for Biden’s lack of action here is obvious. The protests are not popular with the AOC wing of Biden’s party. They’re the ones who control him now.
This has been going on for weeks. No one in Washington can claim to be surprised by the reaction to Biden’s silence.
This NBC News report is from August 6th:
Cuba policy is domestic politics. It’s a tough spot for Biden.
Belkis Gutiérrez, 54, is constantly on her phone looking at videos from Cuba that show people’s discontent with the government following the historic protests that rocked the communist island several weeks ago.
Gutiérrez, who supported President Joe Biden in the 2020 election, said she wants to see more bold action from the administration toward Cuba following the arrests of protesters and worries over food shortages and rising Covid-19 cases.
“I was expecting something more forceful than just sanctioning Cuban officials who don’t travel to the U.S. anyway,” said Gutiérrez, who left Cuba two decades ago and has close relatives on the island…
Many Cuban Americans want to see bolder action against the Cuban government, with demands ranging from military intervention to lifting the decadeslong embargo.
Do you think Trump would have dragged his feet on this? I think he would have jumped on the chance to take action. So does this protester:
I asked this free Cuba protester if she had a message for President Biden:
“There’s a phrase, ‘what would Jesus do?’ I ask, ‘what would Trump do?’ because I believe if he were in power things would be very different.” pic.twitter.com/rLyvoFf9Ng

Biden is wasting a huge opportunity here and it may cost him and his party.

DNC shows its true colors and you’re too late in the day to do anything about it.
Correct. And that, coincidentally, is how Castro was so popular after the revolution. He promised everything and if you questioned it, he threw you in jail or had you shot.
CUBA IS THEIR ROLE MODEL
You expect Biden or any Progressives to criticize Cuba ? Don’t hold your breath. Cuba is the role model.
Bernie Sanders says he’s impressed with their healthcare system. Rep. Waters has supported Castro and Rep. Bass has praised Castro. The list goes on.
The Biden administration has critised Cuba, it’s also sanctioned some of the officials the question is whether that’s enough. So characterising it as a non criticism of Cuba doesn’t really relate to the facts.
@mark311 … let’s be clear, Biden critised Cuba the same way he says the border is not open and the way his administration will not say the border is a “crisis” – they say its a “challenge”.
Biden is great with semantics and has mastered the political art of saying one thing for the cameras and having his political operatives do another.
His “criticism” of Cuba was tepid – far from the full-throated condemnation that should have been made.
Biden may fool you and other leftist indoctrinees – but he does not fool most Americans. In fact most Americans are insulted by President Gas-Light.
Mark – Deep down, in your heart-of-hearts you know it too – but you probably don’t want to admit it. No one who is intellectually-honest with themselves – can be a shrill for Progressives.
The New York Times is also a huge fan of the Castro regime. Little Pinchy Sulzberger and his father, have always held Fidel and his brother in high regard. When “Papa” died, I’m sure the Sulzberger mansion was draped in black.
Is it? I’m not clear there is much evidence of that. A quick Google of NYT and Cuba and you’ll see numerous stories which seem to be diametrically the opposite of what you claim.
New York Times? Really? Most of us know better than that. Why don’t you?
.
Because the articles in the NYT don’t indicate that. You know actual evidence . If you have a particular article that suggests otherwise then feel free to link but as I pointed out a quick Google of Cuba NYT articles suggests the opposite.
Well, I do have a dog in this fight, so hear me out.
The problem is this: Biden does not need Florida.
It would be a nice-to-have, but the reality is that he does not need it. All he needs is the ability to cheat in certain key counties of certain key states. His “extensive voter fraud organization” is not strong enough in Florida. (Not yet. But Broward County has always been a cesspool of voter fraud).
Cuban American voters live mostly in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Democrats tend to win Dade, Broward and Palm Beach. They lose Florida because of the rest of Floridians. Most of them are probably friends of the Cuban cause, but they have other priorities.
So Biden has a choice: make Cuban Americans mad, or make his handlers, owners of the cheating machine that put him the White House, mad.
I think he made his choice clear.
“So Biden has a choice:”
Biden’s only choice is to say what they tell him or be admitted to a nursing home.
He isn’t able to repeat what they tell him. That’s why he’s spending 4 days a week in Delaware incommunicado. Not much different from a nursing home.
But they think they have everybody fooled and that hardly anyone has noticed Biden’s mental lapses. They call his mental lapses gaffes, as if they were slips of the tongue instead of his brain slipping.
Biden ain’t making it to 2024
He never had a realistic chance at Florida. Some 90% of all Cuban exiles and their families are staunch Republicans and conservatives after JFK refused to back the Bay of Pigs invasion.
By the way, about this quote:
I call BS on that one.
Yes, some Cubans want the embargo lifted, but those are mostly sympathizers of the regime, some of them here working for the regime.
They do not represent of our positions, and are especially NOT representative of the protesters.
What is going on is a cry for freedom, for the dictators to leave power, whatever it takes. And that includes a military intervention by international forces and/or the US.
Nobody is protesting to lift the embargo. That’s a downright lie.
There is no embargo on food and medicine. As a matter of fact Cuba probably imports more food from Cubans in America than from anywhere else.
Not probably and not just from Cubans in America.
One good example: United States (not Cubans in America) is Cuba’s main supplier of poultry. Let’s take 2019, before the Covid plandemic:
In 2019 Cuba imported 287,000 metric tons of chicken meat. About 240,000 of those came from the United States.
Other notable exports fro US to Cuba are soy beans and potato seeds.
The embargo imposes limitations on private financing, but Cuba is free to pay ‘Cash in advance’ or to obtain financing from financial institutions in any other country. Of course, who who will lend money to somebody who never pays their debts?
If the “Cuban Americans” in Florida haven’t figured out who’s on their side by now I don’t think the latest episode is going to change a lot of minds.
There have been claims that the third generation Cubans have been moving significantly to the left. This could very well get their attention.
I just don’t understand how. They’d be applauding the repression down there.
Mostly because they don’t identify as ethnic Cuban anymore, just “Latino”. They’re as brainwashed as everybody else in the modern educational system. It really isn’t much different from other ethnic groups. I grew up in a community that was heavily Italian. The old “Moustache Petes” spoke mostly Italian and learned enough English to keep a job in the local shoe and garment factories and get naturalized. Their kids spoke both languages well and moved into the trades. The third generation, with whom I grew up, spoke English, knew enough Italian to talk to their grandparents, but were otherwise culturally indistinguishable from the other kids.
Biden pleads with the followers of normative Islam.
Those followers, aka Muslims, will act according to their holy writ,

Wrong article, stranger.
The special elections in Texas this year should have scared them, but they are still careening full tilt off that cliff. Let them. When they lose and hopefully lose BIG TIME, they will act like things can go back to normal.
No. The GOP would have to be full retard not to put the Democrats on trial for everything from knowingly violating the Constitution on evictions, coordinating with “private” companies to censor speech and ban people with the “wrong” opinions and all kinds of stuff. I’m sure there is a long list.
The left have probably succeeded in destroying this country, it’s going to take a decade to hit the floor but there is ZERO reason to pretend it is business as usual after 2020 and 2021.
The vile Dhimmi-crats have for decades lionized, romanticized and whitewashed the crimes of Stalin, Che Guevara and Fidel Castro as alleged folk heroes. The “Black Lives Matter” terrorist group still venerates Cuban communists. Useful idiot, career politicians such as Comrade Sanders, Occasional-Cortex and others, have waxed rhapsodic about Cuba’s literacy rate and free healthcare, while excusing the Cuban regime’s totalitarianism and murders of innocents. So, the vile Dhimmi-crats are not about to reverse course and suddenly denounce Cuban communism.
“Biden’s lack of response to Cuba”
Just change the title to “Biden’s lack of response” and it will cover 99% of the news stories concerning his administration.
