School District in Kentucky to Hold Year-Long Anti-Racist Math Training Program for Teachers

Kentucky school district to host year-long anti-racist mathematics training program for teachers
Jefferson County Public Schools in Louisville, Kentucky will host a year-long professional training program on anti-racist mathematics.
The program’s goal is to “eliminate curricular violence and innovate mathematics education” through “anti-bias, anti-racist, and racially equitable practices.”
Educators will engage in monthly sessions with Lateefah Id-Deen, assistant professor of mathematics education at Kennesaw State University, which focus on topics like white supremacy in mathematics, racial trauma in mathematics, and creating anti-racist lesson plans.
Id-Deen teaches mathematics methods courses in the Kennesaw State University Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education, emphasizing racial equity and culturally relevant pedagogy. She is also a frequent speaker at educator conferences and for the local school district.
The Jefferson County Public Schools’ “Anti-Racist Mathematics Pedagogy & Practices” program begins in August 2021 and ends in May 2022. Along with the monthly 2-hour sessions, participants receive individual coaching and feedback.
Teachers accepted into the program are required to teach four social justice math lessons during the Spring 2022 semester. They are also expected to “plan for wider dissemination of their learning within their schools and the district.”
The Jefferson County Public Schools Diversity, Equity, and Poverty Department, which is supporting the program, also works to promote equity in other areas.

Great, so now the idiots in Louisville will be teaching racism instead of just fostering it as they have been doing for years !! Can’t wait to see how much worse they can make downtown and the west end. By the time they are through it will be a real hellhole like most other cities run by Democrats !!

I can hear Sister Mary Frances, my seventh grade math teacher, spinning in her grave. Racist math? I suppose next they are going to go after Physics and Chemistry as too politically polarizing….Good Grief….
“Math education”… in other words, not real math. The ones who majored in math ed are the ones who couldn’t handle actual math.
Say no more.
That way it never bothers them if real math isn’t taught. They don’t like real math much. They have traumatic memories of how it was too hard for them.
I remember as a white child in the early 70’s in Jr. High in Selma, AL w/the then ‘New Math’ Algebra. I was dog cussed in front of the Algebra class by a Mr, Cater, an old black teacher; because I was having trouble picking up the concepts. Because he was black & was in Selma, nothing was ever done to him.
Didn’t help that I was insecure as I was an only child (had a half brother living in Arkansas but didn’t see him frequently) as my family were ‘Corporate Nomads’, moving every 2-3 years. The six or so years we spent in Selma was the longest we spent in any one place.
Even w/tutoring, I had difficulty w/Algebra & the ‘New Math’. I suspect I was dyslexic but ‘73 was long before dyslexia was recognized.
I’ve never had to use Algebra or any other form of ‘New Math’ since.
