1619 Project Author Nikole Hannah-Jones Denied Tenured Position At UNC-Chapel Hill
“the Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism which, at the UNC-Chapel Hill campus, is typically a tenured position”
We noted in a recent quick take the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill hired 1619 Project author Nikole Hannah-Jones.
This story returned to the news on Wednesday because apparently, the school has not given Hannah-Jones tenure.
Thomas Moore reported at The Hill:
UNC-Chapel Hill denies tenure to 1619 Project author Nikole Hannah-Jones
The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill did not approve tenure for New York Times Magazine journalist and The 1619 Project lead author Nikole Hannah-Jones after conservative groups complained about her hire at the school, NC Policy Watch reported Wednesday.
“It’s disappointing, it’s not what we wanted, and I am afraid it will have a chilling effect,” Susan King, dean of UNC’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media, told Policy Watch.
Hannah-Jones was recruited for the Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism which, at the UNC-Chapel Hill campus, is typically a tenured position, NC Policy Watch reported.
However, after going through an extensive tenure approval process, the university ultimately offered Hannah-Jones a non-tenured professorship.
The progressive publication Slate offered an explanation for the denial of tenure:
An anonymous trustee told Policy Watch that they could sum up the rationale behind the decision in one word: “Politics.” The word points to a much larger fight going on in the state around public higher education. Policy Watch’s previous reporting on the Hannah-Jones situation found that since her appointment was announced in April of this year, officials at the university had been getting pressure from conservative groups to rescind it. Calling Hannah-Jones “inflammatory” and a “firebrand activist,” an unsigned editorial from one such group declared: “UNC has once again reared its liberal head.”
As Policy Watch pointed out, some of these conservative groups had financial ties to powerful GOP activists who have, in recent years, been appointed by the state legislature to the Board of Governors.
Of course. Suddenly, “powerful GOP activists” hold tremendous influence over higher education. Does anyone believe that?
Yamiche Alcindor, who writes for the taxpayer-funded liberal propaganda outlet PBS, just doesn’t understand it.
UNC's decision to deny tenure to @nhannahjones is absurd & a reminder of how hard some work to deny the hard truth that is Nikole's life work & the 1619 Project. She is a Pulitzer Prizer winner & a MacArthur genius. What more needs to be said?

If it is true that conservative groups are responsible for making this happen, I have only one thing to say.
Congratulations.

Congratulations, indeed!
Wonder what’s really going on here. Is it a key donor who’s opposed?
She is fond of cancellation. There are many more who deserve the same, including those with tenure.
Can you imagine the Left using POLITICS to get what it wants?
Impossible!
Well nice to know that somebody has their head screwed on straight. Don’t know how long it will last at Chapel Hill.
She is a Pulitzer Prizer winner & a MacArthur genius. What more needs to be said?
Don’t let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya !!
I worked for a MacArthur genius once. Hugest narcissist on the planet–exploiter of low-income communities.
UGH.
Richard Stallman (founder of the Free Software Foundation) is also a MacArthur Genius. The woke crowd hounded him out of his MIT professorship and his FSF position for “disrespecting women” (and by deliberately mischaracterizing his remarks about the Epstein case). So why should we now be pressured to revere the award any more than they did?
And Obama was a Nobel Peace Prize winner. Obama, who bombed Libya and started a civil war there, who kept wars going in Afghanistan and Iraq, who droned American citizens in foreign lands based on nothing more than suspicion of wrongdoing (and then laughed and boasted about what a good killer he was), was given a prestigious award for promoting peace, despite the fact that he’d never done a damn thing to promote peace (and never would). The Pulitzer and MacArthur prizes, like the Nobel peace prize, have been co-opted by rabid leftists and are now meaningless. They are no longer awarded based on any real merit or virtue; instead they are now awarded based on virtue-signaling — leftist, Marxist, globalist virtue-signaling. And if you’re a minority who is willing to bash the United States as hopelessly raaaaaacist, then you’re automatically a front-runner for a prize, no matter how shoddy your work is, or how abysmal your record is.
A blatant attempt to lionize a person who tried to re-write American history has been nullified.
I wonder if the Association of Natural Redheads is behind this?
Her brain is as scrambled as her hair.
Her brain is as scrambled as the current White House resident.
Dr. Jill says her husband wears that label with pride. This is the only country in the world where an Alzheimer’s patient can run for president and receive the most votes ever. She says, “Except for falling down and not being able to remember anything doing the job is not all that difficult.”
The Red Headed League (est. 1891) is outraged.
Outraged, I tell ya. Outraged!
Speaking as a natural redhead, I believe she needs ridicule and belittling for cultural appropriation.
I have read that Grizzlies in the wild tend to be mostly brown while those in captivity are considered red because they consistently vote Republican. There have only been a few cases of blue voting Grizzlies and they were found to be voting from the grave.
She is a Pulitzer Prizer winner & a MacArthur genius. What more needs to be said?

how about “she’s an idiot and a liar?”
when thinking of the pulitzer prize and ladies who have won it(when it actually meant something)always think of fitzgerald and her book “fire in the lake”
then, as now, a stunning piece of journalism–not some bullshyte fantasy
A handmade tale, one of several popular sociopolitical myths. Freedom of speech. Freedom of the press. But otherwise unqualified.
A handmade tale, one of several popular sociopolitical myths, conceived and birthed to stoke diversity, inequity, and exclusion.
I’d hope it’s an anti-moron vote, not an anti-left vote. But the chair of investigative journalism and race doesn’t sound promising.
Lionize is sexist.
she looks like she has had one too many Lionized taters
Any school that would give her tenure has no serious academic standing.
The school probably realizes that–and so they make up ghost conservative groups to blame.
The school gets to make a show of diversity and equity without having to make a commitment.
It’s perfect!
She shouldn’t be on anyone’s payroll.
She does not have a PhD according to her Wikipedia biography.
Wouldn’t it be odd for her to receive tenure at a university, irrespective of what Yamiche Alcindor thinks??
Yes. Tenure is a process, not a rubber stamp.
I’m not a history major, and with very little effort I readily found some factual errors in the 1619 Project. Had Hannah Jones handed in the 1619 Project as a term paper for an undergrad history class, it would have been returned with a plethora of red pencil marks noting the many factual errors in it. The surprise is not that she wasn’t granted tenure. The surprise is that she was appointed to any teaching position at the university level.
It’s not history, it’s a work of political activism masquerading as history, and not very convincingly. Hannah-Jones is a sloppy researcher who got basic facts wrong, and the NY Times has already gone back and made several stealth edits to her work, trying to correct some of the more glaring errors. They have also retracted Hannah-Jones’ original claim that 1619 represents the U.S.’ “real” founding. But the fact remains that her piece is a load of anti-American, Marxist claptrap, which blatantly distorts and misrepresents key aspects of American history, starting with the date when the first African slaves came to America. (It was in 1526, when the Spanish brought African slaves to what is now South Carolina). Hannah-Jones’ work is garbage, but it’s garbage that disparages America, which is good enough for the Pulitzer committee, which awarded her a prize for the same reason that the Nobel committee awarded war-monger Obama a Peace prize: she’s a black leftist and Marxist willing to trash the United States.
Maybe they’ve decided they have enough crazy on staff.
“Enough is as good as a feast”- Mary Poppins.
Did Al Sharpton get tenure with his teaching position at Tennessee State U. He deserves it as much as Hannah-Jones does.
“Well, I never! Who do I have to defraud to get hired round here?!”
This is not a real story when you look up what actually happened
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjcc26NgQ3I&t=88s
The board didn’t approve the position she was offered so the administration gave her a 5 year contract term with the same responsibilities and salary.
No, it’s precisely what happened, no matter how some vlogging Marxist porkchop chooses to spin it.
She was “denied a tenured position,” full stop. And she was.
So they gave her a five-year trial. So what? Not tenured means not protected.
1. She IS protected she has a 5 year contract
2. Your an idiot you really are that link was a take by a very active anti-CRT activist.
3. If you think that 5 year contract isn’t being renewed you really don’t know the university in question.
You are free to pretend we have a win when we don’t or you could fight for real wins.
UNC-CH has never caved to some conservative group. Never. They have always been the bastion of flag-bearers for the radical far leftists. In Chapel Hill, the concept of a conservative group would be more like BLM or Antifa!
Does the carpet match the drapes?
I never want to be in a position to find out.
‘She is a Pulitzer Prizer winner & a MacArthur genius’. Sadly, the demand for ‘inclusion’ and ‘diversity’ ruined the value and meaning of every award, from the Nobel Prize to the Emmys and Oscars.
Bozo the Clown LIVES!
The political left endeavors to hold their putrid garbage up for lionization. There are communities, primarily in the political left, who hold their lowest of losers up as heroes. And if you don’t go along with it, you swiftly become “racist”.
If Pulitzer and McArthur like her so much they can have her. Or some other university in a blue state. “Politics” = the voters and citizens of North Carolina retain some power over what happens at their state sponsored universities. Let’s have more “politics” like that, it’s much needed.
“It’s disappointing, it’s not what we wanted, and I am afraid it will have a chilling effect,” Susan King, dean of UNC’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media, told Policy Watch.
Like the “chilling effect” all universities in North America have on conservatives or on opponents of the usual totalitarian cant emanating from Critical Studies departments?
College Boards have a lot of power that they almost never use. In the case of Hannah-Jones they exercised minimum power and allowed her to be hired anyway. If they wanted to send a message they should have disallowed hiring her in any capacity. For good measure they should have fired Susan King, Dean of “Journalism” for her poor judgement in hiring H-J. Just another example of how weak college boards are.
If you want to gain control of the universities you have to hire administrators from outside of academia. Those from the inside are simply another version of the DC Deep State. You can’t appoint members of the Education Deep State to clean things up. College Boards have the power to do this. They should get busy replacing the woke administrators. Outsiders could then replace the deans , dept chairs, non-academic programs and the waste in administration as necessary. Curriculum needs a complete overhaul in many cases. If the faculty and students get hysterical, so be it.
What with Chapel Hill being the Leftist center of North Carolina this comes as something of a pleasant surprise. The 1619 Project being the stinking pile of hooey that it is, not getting tenure should be the least of her worries. Being in Chapel Hill she may not be leftist enough for somebody on the board.
Denying her tenure is the biggest threat to our democracy since white supremecists stormed the Capital in January.
Yeah…this is a BS story.
She wasn’t DENIED tenure.
She was never OFFERED tenure. She was offered a 5 year contract and NOTHING MORE.
And now I’m guessing UNC-CH is regretting offering her even that. Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of commies.
Hiring her at all is a big mistake.
