Does make me think we may need a Constitutional amendment along the lines of: nobody may run for federal office who has not spent a minimum of working 5 years in a full time private sector job. That and maybe some anti-cronyism requirements for those who do take office.
Public office-holders serve without salary, benefits, or pension. Only strictly necessary expenses reimbursed from public funds. Bribery expanded to include the more aggressive forms of lobbying.
Politics should not be treated as a career, but as a vocation. It should require a real sacrifice of one’s time and personal prospects. It needs to be an unattractive life to weed out those of poor character and irresponsible habits. If you’re not a good steward your own affairs, you’ve no business as a steward of the nation.
I get the sentiment but it’s perhaps a bit too extreme. Were we to do that (no salary, benefits, pension) virtually nobody would run for office. Perhaps a small salary, proportional to the national average income of most people in the nation would be better. That and certain expenses for doing their work, such as travel and rent aid (limited to discourage high end living) for while they are in D.C. The real thing that needs to be guarded against is those seeking to corrupt our politicians with money, bribes, etc in return for favorable treatment. I would be heavily in favor of all politicians who make it into public office having their investments either placed into a trust while they are in office and/or subject to constant independent monitoring for signs of sudden gains that are questionable.
Because Teresa Heinz, widow of R Senator John Heinz from southwestern PA, married Kerry he was able to finance some of his campaign for president via a mortgage when others wouldn’t back him.
Mrs. Heinz enables him to live well – and beyond HIS means; she is his equivalent of making solar panels.
