Mayor of Evanston, IL, Asks Northwestern to Help Pay for Riot Damage Caused by Students
“our residents do not support protesters who are marching through the streets of Evanston at night throwing bricks, stones, or other objects at police officers”
This seems like a perfectly reasonable request. Colleges and universities need to be held more accountable in this arena, especially if they condone protests.

Evanston, Ill. mayor asks Northwestern to hep pay for anti-cop riot damage caused by its students
The mayor of Evanston, Illinois, asked Northwestern University to cover police overtime costs after students led massive protests.
Roughly 150 protesters — including members of the Northwestern University group “NU Community Not Cops” — gathered in downtown Evanston the weekend before the 2020 election. The protests turned violent, resulting in dozens of property damage incidents and an injured police officer, the Chicago Tribune reported.
NU Community Not Cops advertised the Halloween night protest on social media, encouraging participants to wear all black and bring umbrellas. The online flyer bore images of two tombstones bearing the slogans “RIP EPD” and “RIP NUPD.”
In an October 31 public letter to Northwestern University President Morton Schapiro, Evanston Mayor Stephen Hagerty said that he woke up to learn that Northwestern students had “ratcheted up their generally peaceful protest” the previous night.
Hagerty stated that “our residents do not support protesters who are marching through the streets of Evanston at night throwing bricks, stones, or other objects at police officers, shooting fireworks in their direction, and intentionally damaging and defacing public property, all while hiding behind umbrellas and lasers aimed in the eyes of police officers.”
He warned Schapiro that Evanston police would arrest any protester who harms or threatens harm to police officers, as well as damages public property. Additionally, he noted that Northwestern students’ 30-day protest movement “is costing tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars, in overtime,” and expressed a hope that Northwestern would help to cover the costs.

I actually don’t think that’s reasonable. Unless there’s some kind of in loco parentis precedent, a university isn’t responsible for what its students do off-campus. That’s an ugly can of worms.
Now, what I do think is reasonable is a letter informing the university that any student or faculty or administrative staff of the university caught engaging in such behaviour will be aggressively prosecuted, and the county expects the university’s full and enthusiastic cooperation in this lest the university find itself on the uncomfortbale end of a conspiracy or RICO investigation.
But remember “Actions talks and BS walks. The city has every right to go after the college, Marxists Employees of the college are the one promoting the violence.
They won’t pay. It would be fun for the city to sue to close the school as a public nuisance.
Sick the building department on them.
Maybe the Mayor is suggesting to the troublemakers that they should transfer to Portland State, where they can riot and not be prosecuted.
If Northwestern doesn’t want to cover Evanston’s expenses, maybe the Mayor should issue a Dusk to Dawn curfew on Northwestern students. In addition, I would recommend more canine units. Want to riot, my dog will rip you a new one!
If Evanston has the guts to do it, they need to start with the lawsuits for every single organization involved – starting with the university.
