U. Minnesota Lecture Features 12-Step Recovery Program for Whiteness

University of Minnesota lecture features 12 step recovery program for whiteness
The University of Minnesota’s School of Social Work hosted a virtual lecture recently that aimed to teach white people about their white supremacy and how to counteract it by using a “12 step” program mirrored after the one used by people in Alcoholics Anonymous.
The two-hour “Recovery from White Conditioning” lecture, hosted through the school’s Center for Practice Transformation, featured therapist Cristina Combs.
Combs is a University of Minnesota alumnus who created the white supremacy 12 step program “after years of struggling to navigate the role and presence of whiteness in her personal, academic, and professional journeys,” according to the university’s website.
The university’s website indicates the lecture can earn viewers continuing education units.
Combs said her program helps people recover from their whiteness.
“I also want to hold that alongside the tension that, in this model, we are, in fact, centering whiteness, but we are centering it differently: to expose it, study its patterns, and to transform its violent legacy,” she said.
Combs began the lecture by acknowledging that “I am on traditional Dakota land,” the territory of a Native American tribe which settled in Minnesota. She also acknowledged “George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and all of the other lives stolen from families and communities and our world due to police brutality and state-sanctioned violence.”
She then talked about the goal of the lecture: to “decenter whiteness.”

In contrast, if one were to take the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous and simply replace Alcohol and Alcoholism with Academics and Academia, it would be a pretty accurate portrayal of what we are seeing in higher education today.
Step 1 We admitted we were powerless over academics, and that our lives had become unmanageable.

So Step 1 is we admitted we were white?
By the way, the real 12 step recovery program they should have is to help people recover from being ignorant, rock-headed lefty drones. But those chumps aren’t anywhere NEAR getting to step 1.
I’m trying to wrap my head around the idea that my being a Person Of Whiteness (POW) causes any black person to fail.
I am retired and live in a part of the country with a tiny black population. I rarely ever see any black persons except on tv or in the movies.
I could follow every step of the recovery program devoutly, and it would not affect the lives of any black person one whit.
Could it possibly be, as in the case of white, brown, red, whatever color people, the problems of black people are of their own doing?
Nah! Must be all those nasty white racists who cause black people to fail. /s
How does she address the fact that everyone, including people of color, are on Dakota land? Isn’t this just a hustle to try to get some of the social justice warrior money that’s flowing around out there?
After completing the AA 12 Step Program, I will still be an alcoholic. After completing Ms. Combs’ course, I will still be white and I will still be reviled for being white. No thanks.

So they are separating out the people of one race, stereotyping them as somehow bad and deficient, and telling them that they have to change in a prescribed 12-step manner. Doesn’t this contradict the University’s policy on racial discrimination and stereotyping?
Imagine what would happen if they did the same stereotyping of Black people, telling them they were bad and had to change. The Black people would all be mad as hell, with good justification.
Means they LOSE ALL government funding.

The problem here isn’t so much one wacky racist—we’ll always have those, and in small numbers they’re harmless—as the university which “normalizes” such vicious claptrap.
Meanwhile, next time someone “blacksplains” to me how privileged and supreme (as in “supremacist”) I am, I’ll just politely say “thank you for noticing.”

I have occasionally wondered if university insanity has reached it apex. Apparently, if someone has thought it had then someone has been proven wrong again.
Whenever I have watched a clip from the movie “Idiocracy” I cringe and realize again that I could not have sat through the entire movie. Yet, the institution of the University seems determined to achieve it!
USA is not structured to ban stupid and subversive courses from universities as is Hungary, and having that kind of federal power over education has its dark side.
In the novel “Starship Troopers” (not the movie, you semi-literate troglodyte 🙂 Robert Heinlein describes an education structure where the entire educational process, kindergarten through college, includes “History and Moral Philosophy”, intended to train (dare I say indoctrinate” students into behaving sanely and weeding out the obvious sociopaths. That would take at least one hole generation to have any influence. And then, who would keep tabs on the mentors? But for now we have had the opposite indoctrination taking place for 3-4 generations, trying to weed out the sane, the patriotic, the well-behaved.
