Biden has no good VP choices in the field under consideration
The pickings are slim in a campaign where the Dem VP nominee is the presumptive president due to Biden’s clear mental infirmities.
So maybe as early as next week Joe Biden will announce who he is picking to be his vice presidential nominee. Or more precisely, the vice president nominee will be picked, Biden will be informed, will come to believe he made the choice, and will appear in front of a camera with a note written in large crayon with the person’s name.
There really are no good choices among the people known to be under consideration.

The choice of VP for Biden is more important than usual because Biden is half-baked. No one expects him to be much more than a figurehead, and it’s unlikely he’d make it through a full first term without a babysitter. So the VP choice really is the presidential choice this time around. That means the Dem VP nominee will be under even more intense scrutiny than is normal.
Top contenders in the order listed by the Times
Kamala Harris — The conventional wisdom choice. Brings the most ‘gravitas’ of the various contenders, which shows you how little gravitas the group has. She was the Attorney General and now a U.S. Senator for the largest state, and ran in the primaries so she has some national campaign experience. The problem is, she is very unlikable and harsh. Her only big moment during the primaries was when she savaged Biden on stage over forced busing decades ago. She was unable to garner enthusiasm among black voters, or really any voters. She was a vicious prosecutor, not exactly a plus for a Democrat base that hates the police and law enforcement. And, her rocket to political power was due to her dating the most powerful politician in the state at the time, Willie Brown, who is not shy in talking about it. She’s the conventional choice, and I think most likely, but she’s underwhelming.
Elizabeth Warren — Please. Pretty please. Pretty please with a cherry on top, pick her Joe. There are a lot of leaks and rumors — which probably are false flags, that Biden may choose Warren despite the pressure to pick a ‘woman of color.’ I don’t understand that, since Warren held herself out as a woman of color while climbing the law professor ladder. In no sane world would Biden bring Warren’s baggage into his campaign, but this isn’t a sane world. While I think it unlikely, I won’t be shocked.
Tammy Duckworth — Willing to have a conversation about removing George Washington statues. Perfect. Has the wounded veteran personal narrative, which could count for a lot. But not an impressive political figure otherwise, comes across as a whack job who is not ready for prime time. Is from Illinois, so the oppo researchers are bound to have a field day. We don’t know much about Tammy, but if she’s the nominee, there is bound to be some Illinois intrigue — bet Blago knows stuff, or knows people who know stuff, and guess who set him free?
Susan “Benghazi Video” Rice — While Harris is the conventional choice, don’t discount Rice. She’s from Team Obama, and that counts for a lot with Biden, who has good long-term memory, but poor short-term memory. He knows where he’s been, but not where he is. And where he’s been is around Susan Rice. Of course, this would be back to the future, as Benghazi and Rice’s lying about it would be relitigated. I put Rice as the No. 1 sleeper for Sleepy Joe’s nominee.
Karen Bass — Before a couple of weeks ago, had anyone heard of her? What we have heard is that she pledged allegiance to communist causes earlier in life, and praised Scientology. She’s the “rising star” in the field, but unless team Biden is super confident in its vetting, she’s really risky. Picking Bass would be an act of desperation, which seems unlikely for a candidate ahead in the polls.
Val Demmings — Another person who doesn’t have a national profile, though was one of the impeachment managers against Trump. An ex-cop, which should fit awkwardly in a party driven by cop hatred. Another person who has not been vetted in public life, a risk.
The “oh, please” choices
Keisha Lance Bottoms — Fiddled while Atlanta burned. Forgetabout it. She couldn’t control her own city.
Gretchen Whitmer — The Wicked Witch of the Midwest. You want to motivate Trump voters? Pick her.
Tammy Baldwin — I always confuse her with the other Tammy. Bland and blah, but she’s from Wisconsin, a swing state. Absolutely nothing else going for her. Per the Times, “many Democrats might object to an all-white ticket.”
Michelle Lujan Grisham — know nothing about her. Per Times, “Lujan Grisham appears to be the only Latina candidate under consideration.” If that’s all she’s got, Biden might as well pick a non-white VP who brings more to the table, like Harris or Rice.
“Governor” Stacey Abrams — Is she still a thing? On what basis is she even on an expanded list?
Maggie Hassan (NH Senator) and Gina Raimondo (RI Governor) — Not a chance. Even the Times says they are not being seriously considered. So why are they on the list?
Of course, there’s always the possibility of a Black Swan event.

Agree on Susan Rice. Biden will say he has worked with her for many years – how many he can’t remember – and knows exactly how competent and qualified she is – and, at this point, probably thinks Benghazi is Ben Gazzara.
President Trump should demand to debate Biden’s VP choice and state clearly that Joe Biden is a placeholder nominee.
My wish is on Susan Rice. I think Biden’s team looks at Rice as a “safe choice” being a women of color but not with the baggage that Harris has. Now Rice does have baggage but the Dems and Biden are in fantasy land right now and think they can deal with it. I think they are wrong.
I also think they want to try to prevent Rice from being indicted by Durham in order to protect Obama. And it is my great hope that even as the VP pick for Biden that Durham and Barr will buck tradition and still drop a big fat multi-indictment charging document on her like a nuke.
Of course I realize that the indictment thing has a very slim chance of happening. I still think she has enough baggage that in the end she would be bad for his campaign.
My second choice is Warren. Picking Warren however would really hurt the Biden campaign. The left has really split the Democratic Party into separate groups that are no longer even in under the same tent. They can’t even maintain a “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” standard because they keep attacking each other over the stupidest of things. Just witness now how BLM is attacking the Wall of Moms in Portland. A Warren pick would be a disaster.
I think Harris (3rd choice) has too much baggage. She’d be torn apart. Especially on her past as a prosecutor.
The rest? The Democratic Party won’t let him pick those people. The man has dementia. They are intentionally letting a man with dementia run for POTUS. They expect him to not last his first term. Wouldn’t surprise me if they expect him to leave in his first year. No way they stand by and let him pick one of those other women.

I have quite a bit of confidence in Barr. I have seen little to give me confidence in Durham, not lack of confidence either, but he’s awfully sloooow, and why? Does he want to help a felon win just to avoid throwing indictments into the election season?
Well thought through comment. Especially on the potential Rice indictment. True, any indictments are looking bleak, but your thought process is sound.
The single most important criteria for Biden’s pick is to hold on to voters who know Biden is not all there. I think Rice fills that bill as perhaps the best qualified and most experienced. In my opinion, Barr is hiding in his own basement and we will see nothing consequential out of him – all hat and no cattle?
There are women who would make a good President of the United States.
I count none of these women in that number.
That’s because none of them are Democrats.
First thing Biden did was box himself in. By writing off any male candidates (straight or *gasp* bi/gay) he eliminated probably otherwise descent choices). If the Democrat party was sane, he’d pick Representative Tim Ryan from Ohio to boost his chances in the rust belt. But that’s a “If” that not there.
My vote is for a Black swan event. Biden accepts the nomination on the first night, steps aside on the second night, the third night is all Democrat speeches and speculation, then the last night the real Democrat ticket is unveiled.
I don’t think the Democrats want your Black Swan event to happen. The reason is Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton.
At this point in the campaign everyone except Biden is no longer officially running for POTUS.
If Biden steps down than every single previous candidate can jump back in to the race immediately. Technically by their own rules anyone else who wasn’t previously running could also jump into the race.
Sanders would get up and say as the second place person he should be the nominee. This would negate all the maneuvering the Democrats did to prevent him from winning the nomination.
Hillary would step in and say she could unite the party and defeat Trump.
You’d probably see both candidates immediately pick a woman, a black woman, to be their VP partner in order to garner delegate votes.
It could be chaos. Glorious chaos. If we are lucky we can get some sore loser riots to happen around the country.
Which is why I think the Democrats are going to work damn hard to make sure it doesn’t happen.

This. The Dems desperately need Biden to hold on until at least after the convention. Then he can resign or fall off the perch. I think they’d ideally like him to stay until October, if he’s not doing well in the polls; if he is doing well then they’ll want him to stay until after the election. But at the very least they need him till the convention is safely over.
Fun fact: If they replace him any time before Dec 14 they do not have to pick his running mate. Until that date, if he resigns or dies the DNC picks his replacement, and they can pick anyone. After that date (assuming he wins in November) his running mate automatically takes his place.
I know this is a really far outlier, but Dems being Dems and the meaning of a promise being, well, flexible, the Black Swan — let the name stick, for sure, it might still attract enough Black voters — just might turn out to be a real vote-getter and campaign-exciter; I’m talking about Bernie Sanders!

I haven’t read the post yet but had to reply immediately to the headline. Of course he has no good choices, since his field is restricted to Democrats. Forget about his having further arbitrarily restricted it to female Democrats, and the current circumstances almost demanding that he further restrict it to female melanin-rich Democrats. None of that makes much difference once the initial field are all Democrats anyway.
I expect Warren to announce that she is 1023/1024th melanin challenged and therefore has the ADA qualification.

Personally, I don’t think Duckworth would be a bad pick. Neither would Grisham from NM. They’re enough unknown you can set the narrative from the get-go.

I disagree. Bottoms is a living example of why Affirmative Action is such a crappy idea (incompetent, arrogant, meager resume, little charisma), but the same was true for Obama. To me Bottoms seems to thread the needle for the Communists. She has black skin and a vagina, a bit of national recognition (but not enough to have generated much opposition), a willingness to play the race card, and an important-sounding job that will wow low information voters. I lived in Nevada for a year (it took me 11 months to find a new home elsewhere, sorry ?♂️). I still received voting material for the last 2 years 1200 miles away. I wouldn’t dare vote in two states, though I often wondered how many others have moved from Nevada to another state, get sent an absentee ballot, vote twice, and keep their mouth shut?

My long shot theory is that if Biden wins, he may bring Barack into the White House in a position that does not require Senate confirmation. Then clandestinely delegate much of Biden’s presidential duties to him. Effectively give him his third term.
I’m just not sure Barack wants it. He’s rich now and has a very cushy lifestyle. Like I said. Long shot. Bordering on fantasy.
More realistically, Biden has ALWAYS wanted to be president. If he wins he will be reluctant to give up power, even to Barack. If his cognitive abilities continue to decline, his Cabinet may have to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove him. Which is why the VP pick is crucial.

I don’t see any reason why the VP couldn’t be a sock puppet too, with the real power being some Valerie Jarrett type who won’t have to submit to the indignity of running for office or being vetted by the Senate.
Normally the VP pick generates attention and then fades because it doesn’t matter a whole lot. This year it’s actually picking the president. Funny that the candidates are weakest when the choice matters the most.
All signs point to Harris, but i still think if Durham were to actually make progress on the investigation and bring indictments (unlikely but possible) Rice would be the choice because the press would make the whole investigation look like a cooked up political witch hunt.
Only righties carry about Benghazi. As awful as it is I don’t think that issue swings voters. It’s not what mattered when Hillary ran.

Biden wins the election due to the Michelle factor and doesn’t last long. M.O. resigns. Who is next in line?
Yep, Pelosi isn’t worried about Joe. Another thought occurred to me. Biden hasn’t named his VP because he would have to make a nationwide public appearance, and he can’t do it. They are figuring out a way for Joe to never have to appear in public to make the VP announcement. He can’t even handle an extremely controlled setting.
