White House coronavirus task force expert Dr. Anthony Fauci announced that a coronavirus vaccine would be ready for testing on humans in “a month or so.” However, it will take at least a year for it to be safe and prepared for the general public.

“I don’t want to over-promise. I said a month and a half the other day; it may be about a month or so. And then very soon, we’ll be sticking the first person with the vaccine,” Fauci told reporters on the South Lawn of the White House Tuesday.

Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, spoke after touring National Institutes of Health facilities in Maryland with President Donald Trump.

“We just had the opportunity to take the president and show him the actual individual researchers who are doing the things that we’ve been talking about,” Fauci said. “The actual scientists — middle level, senior, junior — were there and explained to the president what I have actually been explaining to the press, but showed it on graphics: how after the virus was identified, the sequence was taken and put into this platform called Messenger RNA.”

Trump donates his 2019 fourth-quarter salary to help combat coronavirus

Trump donated his fourth-quarter 2019 salary to the Department of Health and Human Services, where it will be used to support the efforts to combat COVID-19.

This is not the first time Trump has donated his salary to an agency facing an urgent problem. Since taking office, Trump has directed his $400,000 annual salary to a different agency each quarter.

Previous donations have gone to, among others, the Office of the Surgeon General to help combat the opioid epidemic, to the Department of Homeland Security to help build a wall on the southern border, and to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, to help combat alcoholism.

Washington state reports new coronavirus deaths, bringing US total to 9

Washington state health officials identified three new coronavirus fatalities, including two patients who died on Feb. 26 and weren’t previously linked to COVID-19, bringing the total number of US deaths to 9.

The two patients who died that day were affiliated with the Life Care Center of Kirkland, where several residents have fallen ill and at least three others have died. One of the patients, a female resident in her 80s, died in her family home. The other patient, a 54-year-old man, was transferred to the Harborview Medical Center in Seattle from Life Care on Feb. 24 and had underlying medical conditions, the hospital said in a statement.

…“This is a very fluid, fast-moving situation as we aggressively respond to this outbreak,” Dr. Jeff Duchin, health officer for Seattle & King County public health, said in a statement. “People with suspected or confirmed exposure to COVID-19 should reach out to their healthcare provider. As public health professionals we really appreciate clinicians on the front lines of patient care and they are critical to this response.”

N.H. coronavirus patient breaks isolation and potentially exposes virus to others

I suspect this won’t be the only instance of this:

The first coronavirus patient in New Hampshire — an employee of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center — defied instructions from public health officials to stay away from other people.

In a statement, the state Department of Health and Human Services said the patient attended an invitation-only private event Friday “despite having been directed to self-isolate.”

So the left was blowing its collective loads all over walls over Fouci arguing with Trump that vaccine might take years and Trump said months sounds better…now we are less then a month from testing beginning.

I think maybe Fauci needs to pull his head in and maybe concentrate on his job instead of disagreeing in public with the President.

Also hardest hit remains Democrats at this good news development.

An interesting article about an Israeli firm that was working on a Corona Virus vaccine for chickens. With a little tweeking, that vaccine could be ready for humans very soon.

CDC did not cover itself in glory. What with all the attention to gun control, they forgot their mission. They screwed up the production of test kits.

On the good news side, casual contact is unlikely to spread the disease. Nearly all the cases in China were acquired from family members. You aren’t likely to get it from simply being in the same room with someone who sneezes. All the hand washing advice is good advice.

Concerning your casual contact comment – China went into a forced quarantine so it is logical that family units would infect each other.

But the infections coming out of Italy seem to be from more casual contacts which then spread to other countries as people returned from travel. Further increases in patients do seem to be family related contacts.

About the Life Center infections – I would guess that the older people were not active travelers, so infection would have been introduced via a visitor or staff. Contact tracing needs to be done.

FBN just reported that the second NY patient has resulted in additional new patients. The wife and two kids are logical new patients, but apparently the schools are now being impacted. The neighbor, who drove the man to the hospital, is also infected. What was the level of contact between these two – a simple taxi-like drive (back seat, no contact) or did he help the person out of the house, into the car, etc? Again talking about the level of contact will be important.

But, with contact tracing, how well can anyone really remember or track their whereabouts?

“N.H. coronavirus patient breaks isolation”

I have commented repeatedly that we cannot trust people to self isolate, there are just too many idiots.

Now, I believe that there are laws related to intentionally transmitting STD’s. Do they apply to this situation? Is there criminal or civil exposure?

ScottTheEngineer in reply to JusticeDelivered. | March 4, 2020 at 10:01 am

Exactly what happened with the Ebola bitch. “I’m a medical professional I dont have to be quarantined” even though the doctor she worked with just died from it.

Re laws about spreading STD – if I remember correctly, California did pass a law about not having to tell sex partners about their HIV/AIDS status.

randian in reply to Liz. | March 5, 2020 at 12:07 am

That was a reversal of a previous California law that did make it a crime to knowingly expose your sex partner to an STD.

    Concur.

The NH patient needs to be locked up for the duration of their quarantine (safety dictates solitary confinement), and they need to be sued for “mental anguish” at the least. They need to be fired and any certifications allowing them to work in a medical facility need to be suspended pending retraining.

This is exactly what Fauci said was going to happen. “Starting human trials in a month or two. Then several months for that. Several more for wider trials. Release next year hopefully.

The problem with these quarantines is that they are essentially unenforceable. You can not simply incarcerate a person for having a disease which is only slightly more fatal than influenza a and b, for which no one is quarantined.

The real problem here is that, due to the media hype, public health officials really have NO idea how to address COVID-19. the media is screaming that something must be done to protect the public from contracting this disease. Unfortunately, nothing can be done. people who have contracted the disease are suspected of being able to infect others for up to 2 weeks prior to any symptoms becoming evident. This makes quarantine of patients with obvious signs of infection moot, as seemingly healthy people, who are infected, are out spreading the disease.

Now, as this disease is thought to be spread mainly through exhaling the virus from the lungs, a person can probably effectively self quarantine by simply wearing a common surgical mask. While not effective to prevent a healthy subject from being infected, they should be quite effective in keeping an infected individual from spreading the virus through exhalation. After all they work very well in operating theaters

This disease is simply going to have to run its course. Once vaccines are available, they might help. anti-viral treatments can probably assist those suffering serious to extreme symptoms. But, nothing is going to stop the spread of the disease. And, we still do not have an accurate mortality rate, from this virus, in the US.

“infect others for up to 2 weeks prior to any symptoms becoming evident. This makes quarantine of patients with obvious signs of infection moot”

Fuzzy reasoning, in that quarteening people who have been exposed for two weeks, possibly longer, does make sense, in that they could be spreading the illness, and quarteening people who are diagnosed makes sense because they are definitely spreading the virus..

Would SYG be applicable if someone who had been sent to guarantee was trying to approach someone?

It is inevitable that this will spread, but slowing its spread is the key to minimizing widespread disruption of our society.

What the heck are you talking about.

In the first pace, unless tested, no one knows who has COVIS, until they exhibit symptoms. And, if it is accurate that they are contagious for two weeks PRIOR to exhibiting any symptoms, then just exactly how do you identify them? And, even if you quarantine everyone exposed to the virus, how do you know that they will not be exposed and contract the virus AFTER they are released from quarantine? You don’t, do you?

Second, we have no evidence that COVIS is a particularly fatal disease, especially in the US. We did not quarantine AIDS sufferers, did we? We do not quarantine people with the flu or whooping cough or the mumps, do we? Wide spread quarantine of people, especially those who exhibit NO symptoms or do not test positive for the virus, will result in litigation. You can not incarcerate people because they might be dangerous.

Also, there is no state in the Union which allows deadly force to be used against a person suffering from a disease with limited fatality rates. So, forget that.

Sent to quarantine

JusticeDelivered | March 4, 2020 at 1:56 pm

Iran is getting clobbered: “Lawmakers infected: 23 lawmakers from Iran’s parliament have tested positive for coronavirus. That means around 8% are infected. Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani announced last Friday that parliament sessions would be suspended until further notice.”

JusticeDelivered | March 4, 2020 at 3:32 pm

“Medical supplies: Iran received its first planeload of assistance from the World Health Organization on Monday. That included eight tons of test kits that will allow it to test 100,000 people, IRNA said in a report. The WHO also sent six teams of epidemiologists, physicians and specialists in laboratories tests.”

Why are medical supplies being wasted on Iran? Now is a good time to kill Iran’s electric grid, and free all the water they are holding hostage, to seek its lowest point.

I can see the WHO aid because of the potential world-wide impact due to the culture and religion. There seems to be some clerics who are spreading false information about the virus and how it spreads. And the people are crazy enough to lick their religious icons.

Then, Ramadan is 4/24/2020 to 5/23/2020 and then the hajj is 7/28/2020 to 8/2/2020. So, if there is significant travel to and from the middle east during this time, the disease spread could be significant. There are already a lot of infections due to people returning from Iran to their homes. I saw one article that mentioned that travelers from Iran were not being checked at Canadian airports. I guess the Canadians can’t insult those travelers.

A potential upside is that WHO will be able to discover the extent of the illnesses and death in the country.
