Virginia AG Mark Herring Admits He Wore Blackface Back in 1980
He wore it to look like a black rapper back in 1980 at a college party.
WHAT is going on in Virginia? After the backlash against Gov. Ralph Northam (D), I guess those who also donned blackface want to get ahead of the news.
Attorney General Mark Herring just admitted that wore blackface back in 1980 at a party in college.

“In 1980, when I was a 19-year-old undergraduate in college, some friends suggested we attend a party dressed like rappers we listened to at the time, like Kurtis Blow, and perform a song,” Herring said. “It sounds ridiculous even now writing it. But because of our ignorance and glib attitudes – and because we did not have an appreciation for the experiences and perspectives of others – we dressed up and put on wigs and brown makeup.”
Said Herring, “This was a onetime occurrence and I accept full responsibility for my conduct.”
The revelation further roils the top levels of Virginia government.
Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam and Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax are already facing controversies, and Herring would be next in line to be governor after those two men.
Many including Herring have urged Northam to resign after the discovery of a photo of someone in blackface on his 1984 medical school yearbook page.
Herring wrote that it “was a onetime occurrence” and he accepts “full responsibility for” his conduct.”

Nothing will happen, and the whole mess will vanish down the memory hole. Northam will not resign, and will easily finish out his term. Fairfax will run for governor when Northam’s term is up. Herring will do whatever he plans to do with no protest. To be a Democrat is to do what you please when you please to whomever you please, and the media will obediently lick your boots.
We have seen this movie before: William Jefferson Clinton was credibly accused of rape and sexual assault, and the media turned him into a hero. Others include Ted Kennedy (murder), Tom Carper and Sherrod Brown (domestic violence), and Hillary! (pretty much everything else), just to name a few.
So if he accepts full responsibility and he demanded the Governor to resign for being in a picture in blackface is he resigning?
No of course not! Hypocrisy his best friend.
These confessions among the Dems remind me of the confessions of the anti-Mao Chinese as they were bundled off to the re-education camps. Some were to be executed (forced to resign in Dem-speak), and others were to be tortured (grovel in front of the cameras for the Dems).
I hope when the media uncover some of these long-ago PC violations among Republicans (and they will make sure they do), the Republicans will be the grown-ups in the room and say, “Sure, he was young and stupid, but he grew up. Now we should all grow up, too.”
I’m 63. I’ve never been at any party or gathering where anyone has ever worn blackface. (Camouflage is NOT blackface….) Anyone I would count as a friend has always thought it inappropriate. But we’re all just middle class.
Seems that all these blackface parties where people thought it was appropriate are coming from upper class liberal gatherings. There’s a lesson there somewhere…

I was at UVa in 1980 and went to plenty of parties. I never saw anyone dress in black face. This was not the norm.
I guess they’ll have to take back all of those tributes to Al Jolson.

This “blackface” controversy is nothing more than PC BS. The fact that any person may impersonate a race other than his own should mean nothing, unless the act is meant to ridicule or degrade people of that specific race. In the current cases, this racial appropriation.impersonation is being used as a huge club to bash Caucasians who liberals disapprove of, for some reason.
Where is the outrage over Hamilton? This play is cast entirely of Blacks impersonating White historical figures. It is appropriating White identity. If racial grievance is a real thing, why is it only a one-way street, which benefits certain minorities [Asians seem to be exempt from the benefits of minority racial grievance]? I guess that some pigs are more equal than others.

There’s this weird malfunction of the mind at play here, which I both don’t understand and find fascinating. It’s like watching a car crash that you know is going to happen and you can’t look away.
This guy wore blackface in college. We’re about the same age, but it never would have occurred to me to wear blackface. But he’s not the racist and I am. I’ve showered with more black guys than he
s broken bread with. Don’t read anything into that; it’s just the nature of military/naval service that you have no privacy.

I served with guys whose last name sounded like Velazquez and Benevidez. Over half of our Border Patrol Agents are Hispanic. They want to shut down illegal immigration just as much as I do. But I’m the racist.

Now toward the end of the second decade of the 21st century “Cultural Appropriation” has become the greatest sin. I want the SJWs to know that if somebody else has a better way of doing things I’m going to steal it. Yes, dark makeup, blackface, whatever you want to call it was seriously a thing in the ’80’s. But you have to have some historical (not hysterical) perspective. Michael Jackson was HUGE, mainstream outlets were only just playing “rap” (via Blondie’s Rapture) for the very first time, so young people at that time were just hearing “rap” (I’m not sure “Rapture” is actually “rap,” but it was ground-breaking in its day. That “go out to the parking lot” schtick sounded cool to our ears at that time). It was new and different, and Blondie had all the pre-Madonna “vogue” poses with “Rapture,” and we thought she was cool It was a zillion years ago, of course, and so much has changed, but one thing that should never ever change is the giving of people the benefit of the doubt. Why not give them the same assumption we give everyone else: that they, like the rest of the population, has come to express and support all forms of tolerance that were inconceivable in the ’80’s?
Back then, I am pretty confident in stating that I didn’t go to a single Halloween party anywhere, at homes, clubs, on campus, wherever, that there weren’t at least a dozen guys dressed up as black guys. That was the height of “cool” back then. Everyone wanted to be (or to be with) the guys in Blondie’s video or to be the King of Pop.
The failure of historical context is unforgivable. NO ONE thought that dressing up as the guy they’d most like to be was an insult to black people everywhere. You know why? Because it wasn’t . . . then. Now it is, and I get that, but back then, it was just fun and being what what you weren’t (but maybe wished you could be) on Halloween.
And no, for the record, I never saw a person dressed as a Klansman back then. It was all Michael Jackson and the “guy in white” from the Blondie video. Later is was Bob Marley. The point is that people didn’t INTEND to harm anyone, and the idea that we can impose our 2019 values on times that are clearly not fully understood is problematic.
If I saw a guy dressed today, in 2019, as the Blondie guy in the white suit or as Michael Jackson, yes, sure, I would see a problem. The problem with my problem is that there was no problem in the ’80’s. Do you really want people in the future judging you by their “enlightened” standards of their day? What are YOU doing now that will be repugnant and reprehensible then? Don’t know? Well, who cares, you should know . . . you know, somehow.
So yeah. Blackface and “dark makeup.” It was the freaking ’80’s. Listen to any standup comic from that time period (black, white, male, female, it doesn’t matter), they weren’t “woke.” We’re “woke” now, and oh how that “wokeness” has improved our lives. We get to pass judgement on people we don’t know, on times we can’t possibly understand, on a socio-cultural more that no longer exists, but yay! The judging is so much fun. Hmph.

I have to clarify one of your points. Viewing everything through the prism of RACISM, or sexism, is a strategic political tactic foisted upon our culture by liberals. It is designed to be used as a weapon against the white majority and to benefit minorities, mostly the black minority. That seemingly intelligent people find a white person darkening their skin to impersonate another race for such traditional holidays as Halloween as being indicative of racial bigotry is insane. It indicates that they are well down the road to being brain washed into accepting the lies foist upon this nation by liberals for the benefit of that group. It is well past time to ignore this BS and get on with life.
I am more impressed that he knew of a rapper to impersonate in blackface in 1980. Tupac was 9 years old!
