Progressive Outlets Claim #WalkAway Movement Being Driven by… Russia!

“may be an early onslaught of Kremlin-linked Twitter attacks ahead of the U.S. midterm elections”

We recently profiled Brandon Straka and his #WalkAway campaign, which encourages liberals to abandon the Democrats over their embrace of far left politics and social justice culture. Straka must be having an impact, because far left outlets have begun to target him and the #WalkAway movement.

The left knows that Democrats can’t afford defectors, especially right before the midterms, so the effort to discredit #WalkAway has begun. How are they doing it? By tying the movement to Russia.

Bob Cesca writes at Salon:

Russian bots are back: #WalkAway attack on Democrats is a likely Kremlin operation

A little more than a year ago, I posted and pinned the following predictive tweet: “Get ready. A year from right now we’ll be up to our asses in Russian fake news, malware, hacks, mayhem aimed at the midterms. Pinning this.” Granted, it wasn’t a difficult forecast knowing what we knew at the time…

One of the present-day agitprop campaigns linked to Putin’s hacker squads is the “WalkAway” hashtag.

The Huffington Post reported over the weekend that this troll attack is a counter-measure against the potential “blue wave” coming this fall, with the WalkAway hashtag intended to simulate real-world Democrats who have apparently chosen to leave the party due to its (try not to laugh) alleged intolerance and lack of civility…

To be clear: This isn’t being circulated by earnest yet misguided voters who formerly identified as Democrats. This is clearly being circulated by trolls connected to the Russian influence operations. #WalkAway has obvious roots in the 2016 primaries, when Russian trolls attempted to turn liberal or left-wing voters against casting general election ballots for the eventual Democratic nominee (either Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton), thus diminishing Democratic turnout.

According to David Gilmour of the Daily Dot, these disenfranchised Democrats are merely Russian actors:

Russian trolls on Twitter pose as ex-Democrats for #WalkAway movement

Kremlin-affiliated trolls have subversively co-opted #WalkAway as an influence campaign, data appears to show. The hashtag is boosting visibility for a right-wing-hyped non-movement of disenchanted liberals who are supposedly abandoning the Democratic Party in a bid to breed division.

Data available through Hamilton 68, an analysis project focused on monitoring agitprop and backed by the Alliance for Securing Democracy, shows that swarms of Russian troll accounts made #WalkAway one of the highest ranking hashtags on Twitter in the past 48 hours.

One writer for Arc Digital noticed similar trends and came to the same conclusion…

As the nation prepares for the 2018 midterms elections, and Democrats tout a surge of support coined the “blue wave,” these influence operations are likely to become more and more common.

Mary Papenfuss of the Huffington Post concurs:

Russian Bots Linked To Viral Twitter Attacks On ‘Hateful’ Dems

In what may be an early onslaught of Kremlin-linked Twitter attacks ahead of the U.S. midterm elections, Russia bots appear to be fueling a wave of criticism targeting Democrats over alleged intimidation in political confrontations and a lack of “civility,” according to bot trackers.

Attacks with the hashtag #WalkAway purport to be from a “grassroots” wave of one-time Democrats who have left the party in part because they say they are so incensed by the hateful and divisive behavior of party members. The message is to “walk away” from ugly confrontations, “intolerance” and hate — and from the Democratic Party.

But the hashtag has been connected to Russian bots. It has ranked as the third or fourth most popular Kremlin-linked hashtag for days, according to bot tracking by the Hamilton 68 site run by the bipartisan Alliance for Securing Democracy, which keeps tabs on Russian activity on the American internet.

Brandon Straka has responded to this narrative on Twitter:

You have to give the left credit. They’ve already devised the excuse they’ll advance if Democrats lose the midterms. It’ll be all Russia’s fault. Again.

When I was in school Russia ate my homework.

Salon came up with this?
There’s a big surprise…

They might as well say it’s the creation of Mephistopheles and his band of devils – it would make just as much sense.

    Thanks Tom! That was awesome!
I just forwarded to a friend of mine who is a huge fan of the original Boney M video.

#WalkAway. #StayAway. #unPlanned. All Soviet conspiracies.

The Russians are coming! The Russians are coming! As told by the party who always LIKED the Russians, and in fact, through Teddy Kennedy, tried to enlist the Soviet Union’s help to elect him, and defeat Ronald Reagan.

Sure wish I had one of them Russian bots.

I’ll take the Power of Delusion for $1000 Alex.

When the ’80s called and wanted their foreign policy back … Obama should have given it to them. But nooooo … and now the D’rats are still stuck with it.

Serves ’em right.

These guys are as paranoid as J Edgar was about “Russians”, except in his days he had some legitimate concerns what with Alger Hiss and the HUAAC/Army McCarthy hearings.

I’m glad that Brandon is now “woke” and can appreciate that we aren’t as crazy as he once thought when it comes to the nimrods he used to associate with.

What choice do the dems have? #WalkAway has to be the result of either dem stupidity and hate or Russian bots. I do appreciate how the dems keep making my dogs look smarter every day. Not easy to do.

Hey Salon, the 80’s called.
They want their Cold War back.

The Russkies don’t do windows. But I hear that they will wipe servers–like with a cloth if Hillary asks.

The few people stupid enough to believe this, won’t walk away anyway. So let them waste their resources on it.

Heh. Dobriy vyecher, Comrades. Your attention please…

The fox is in the duck blind. I say again, the fox is in the duck blind

спать спокойно.

Damn! I was hoping to not hear or see those words. I was beginning to appreciate America and to enjoy my life here. But the Motherland calls. Here goes nothing.

Idiots, they really believe or hope to believe that Russia is behind supporting the Walk Away movements? Lol. Insane! I doubt Russia has the slightest influence. Almost every country in Europe is against Trump and the Republicans, so could you say that this is also some form of collusion? Let us face it, Europe has had a lot of freebees from the US, and they are scared it will end. Well, let me say, it will be good to end so that the EU and countries within it will take a stand on their own. The US is not responsible for the well-being of the rest of the world at all.

The walk away movement is what it is, a recognition of the failures of the Dems, and that it addition to the opposition heaped on from abroad.

[…] Denial: not just a river in Egypt There’s been a popular hashtag on Twitter recently: #walkaway. It’s used by Democrats who are apparently still sane and are leaving their party over its radicalism. Well, the true believers are pretty upset by this, and are scrambling for some way to explain it other than the truth. So they’ve decided to blame the Russians again. Yes, there’s several posts out there about how #walkaway is a Russian propoganda operation or something. Of course, there is no proof whatsoever. […]

Oh, Valerie – I did some research on my own and you were right. The movement is about a distaste for the Democrats radicalism, Gestapo tactics, political violence, censorship via physical intimidation, etc. I am very surprised and happy to have been wrong. I honestly didn’t expect this of them. A ray of hope indeed.

This one was especially touching

The Washington Post offers this: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-intersect/wp/2018/07/02/the-walkaway-meme-is-what-happens-when-everything-is-viral-and-nothing-matters/

One of the most viral #WalkAway tweets, for example, read as the generational reverse of the “woke toddler” meme:

[Image via the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine, captured July 1.]

The tweet had more than 16,000 retweets by Sunday. However, as my colleague Dave Weigel noted, the account appears to be a bot, an impersonation or both: @sofialimited’s profile picture was stolen from a book cover by someone with a different name. The account has since been suspended from Twitter.

The comment section is very interesting. They are treating their own as heretics, in full panic mode. And all it’s accomplishing is solidification of those who walked away.

I never thought I would see the day these Marxist black block antifa pre-printed faux outrage circuses backfire so spectacularly. It always felt like they were winning by cheating and nothing could counter it.

If the socialists (soft communists) claim that it’s Russia then they are claiming that they are involved?
