Survey: Most voters blame parents of separated kids, not the federal govt for current border crisis
Real voters out of step with coastal media? Gee. Who would’ve thought?
A survey released by Rasmussen Thursday found that most voters are not upset with the federal government for creating the current child separation crisis, but blame the parents for bringing their children through dangerous territory into an uncertain situation.
1,000 likely voters were surveyed.
“When families are arrested and separated after attempting to enter the United States illegally, 54% of Likely U.S. Voters say the parents are more to blame for breaking the law. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that only 35% believe the federal government is more to blame for enforcing the law. Eleven percent (11%) are not sure,” writes Rasmussen.
The party breakdown is as expected. 80% of respondents who self-identify as Republican and 56% of the independents surveyed think parents who bring their children to the U.S. illegally are responsible for breaking the law. 60% of Democrats surveyed think the federal government is to blame for enforcing the law.

Seventy-five percent (75%) of Democrats think the Trump administration is too aggressive in trying to stop the flow of illegal immigrants into the United States, a view shared by only 23% of Republicans and a plurality (46%) of unaffiliated voters.
Among all voters, 49% say the administration is too aggressive trying to stop illegal immigration. Twenty-five percent (25%) say it’s not aggressive enough, while 21% view the administration’s policies as about right.
Fifty-four percent (54%) agree with President Trump when he says, “The United States will not be a migrant camp. And it will not be a refugee-holding facility – it won’t be.” Thirty percent (30%) disagree, while 16% are undecided.
The survey of 1,000 Likely Voters was conducted on June 19-20, 2018 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.
Forty-four percent (44%) of voters said in April that Trump is doing a good or excellent job handling issues related to immigration. This is higher approval than President Obama earned on this issue at any point during his time in office.
Men and those 40 and over are more likely than women and younger voters to blame the parents when families are separated after attempting to enter the United States illegally. Most whites and other minority voters agree, while blacks are closely divided.
Women, voters under 40 and black voters are also the most likely to think the Trump administration is too aggressive when it comes to trying to stop the flow of illegal immigrants into this country.
Just 22% of voters who blame the parents more for the children crisis think the Trump administration is too aggressive in trying to stop illegal immigration. Among those who blame the government more, 87% feel that way.
Fifty-three percent (53%) of voters who Strongly Approve of the job the president is doing think his administration is not aggressive enough when it comes to fighting illegal immigration. But 89% of those who Strongly Disapprove of the job the president is doing say the administration is too aggressive.

Years ago I received some really valuable advice, “If ya wanna stay outta barroom fights, stay outta barrooms.”
It’s good advice. Mexican, Guatemalan, Honduran families who don’t want to be separated from their kids at the US border might consider following it and not go near the US border. So too for Gaza Muslims who don’t wanna get shot; they might consider not going near the border fence with Israel.
On the other hand, if you go looking for trouble chances are good you’ll find it.
It is indefensible, ignoring the trafficking of these children. That many are looking the other way and pretending that it is a good thing that they are being sent with/to strangers is stunning. Only a blithering idiot doesn’t understand that a percentage of them wind up in sex trafficking or abused by their “guardians”.
It appears that some Hispanic parents are as bad as the majority of Palestinian parents, willing to sacrifice one or more of their children for personal gain. I simply cannot understand how any parent can do this.

That’s all you need to tell you the poll is mathematical rubbish. Somebody bought an Instant Poll Kit—”As Seen On TV”—and followed the instructions on the back of the box … and still got it wrong.

A lot depends on the method. Rass. is pretty good. And Likely Voters is a better measure of voter action than Registered Voters or General Adult Population.
The methodology isn’t particularly bogus (that is, poor, but maybe not blatantly worse than usual), but the math is very obviously not what it pretends to be. This is not a debatable point; like arguing about, say, case inflections in Finnish, those who don’t speak the language can have little useful to contribute.
They throw the nonsense math stuff in to give the appearance that it’s all more scientific than it really is.
What methodology is that, tom? As far as I can ascertain, there was no fault with the methodology in this case. So, how about you do all of us a favor and at least produce a link to this questionable methodology of which you speak.

It’s a bog-standard statement of a 95% confidence interval. Most poll press releases contain them. 1,000 is certainly an adequate sample size. Are you arguing that it’s not a SRS?
95% +/- 3% is pretty much the “gold standard” of reliability in statistically valid random sampling, with greater validity possible, but economically unsupportable (for those in Rio Linda that means it costs more than it is worth).
The key, as you point out, is the universe which is selected to be sampled. Likely voters is much more reliable than the general population and still is more reliable than registered voters. The variable which polling has a problem with is the number of people in every universe which simply refuse to be polled. Particularly during political seasons, such as the primaries currently, many people screen calls and won’t answer those from numbers/callers whom they don’t know. This may be more prevalent among voters who tend to support conservative candidates and issues.
Yes, they probably got it wrong: public approval for Trump is likely much higher – as is his support for the immigration issue.
And hatred of the media (including hollywood) is probably much worse than we can guess.

The “resistance” is losing this war, in large part by taking such extreme positions that they are turning Democrats into independents and Republicans in large numbers.
The media and politicians are completely out of step with the citizens when it comes to illegal immigration. I live in a border state with a majority Hispanic population. They’re not crazy about illegal immigration either and many who were, changed their tune really fast once they had to swap out their former driver’s license for a Real ID compliant license.
Out of curiosity, what caused your state’s* US citizens (or legal residents) of Hispanic ethnicity to change their attitude toward illegal aliens because of the state changing to “Real ID” compliant Driver’s Licenses? Was it simply the growth in the number of people on the road without driver’s licenses? Finding out they had an unknown twin with a very similar name and the same Social Security Account Number who also had a license? Or did I read that wrong and it was those who are not citizens or legal residents who had a change of attitude?
* Presumably NM with a 2016 Hispanic population of 48.5%, a plurality which has grown slightly since 2016 and might be a majority soon.

A lot of this current “crisis” is to keep the lunatic fringe upset and frothing at the mouth. It gives cover for the celebrities cursing and tossing out their hate filled rages. It gives the excuse for the Dem politicians to tell us this is not who we are and to bush Trump (in other words, bidness as usual).
The timing of course is the key. The IG watered down report is not good optics for the left and NWO who infiltrated the agencies. This serves as the big news so media networks can push the condemnations of the IG aside and allow for Trump to be called a monster. This whole thing with children being separated has been going on a long time, even under Duh One, so it isn’t “breaking news”, other than it being something to fire up the base.
It seems more, not enough, but more, people are digging deeper into stories and finding the media yet again serving as propaganda for leftists agendas than keeping the people really informed. Others just go along walking with their distractions and aren’t paying any attention.
