ABC Axes Roseanne’s Hit Show After Her Tweets Disparaging Obama Alum, Valerie Jarrett

“Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” said ABC.

Tuesday, ABC announced it was cancelling Roseanne Barr’s hit TV show after the actress made less than kind remarks about former Obama advisor, Valerie Jarrett.

Barr tweeted, “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.” After intense backlash, Barr clarified, saying she was joking.

According to the Washington Times, Barr deleted the tweet:

Her tweet referred to Ms. Jarrett, who is black, as a product of the Muslim Brotherhood and “Planet of the Apes.” The tweet appears to have been deleted.

Ms. Jarrett served as senior adviser to former President Barack Obama.

Comic Wanda Sykes, who was a consulting producer for the show, announced that she would not return to work on the program.

The show is on hiatus for the summer after wrapping up the season last week.

Barr apologized for her tweet and announced she was leaving Twitter.

Roseanna has a long history of off-color and somewhat offensive stunts.

“Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” said ABC entertainment president.

The reboot of Roseanne raked in killer numbers, irking critics who were less than thrilled that a pro-Trump, middle-American show could do so well without their blessing.

Yes, it was in very bad taste. You would think any reasonable human knows that in the 21st century, twitter is going to be used against you and humor is never considered an acceptable defense.

But they didn’t cancel her show because of one less-than-nice tweet. They canceled her show because she didn’t hate Trump enough. The tweet was just an excuse.

She voted for Trump … she doesn’t hate Trump at all.

ABC was embarrassed by their hit show. The Roseanne reboot was supposed to be a one-and-done, but then it took off and they couldn’t cancel the #1 show.

Today she gave them an excuse to fire her. Now they can tell their shareholders that the firing wasn’t about Trump.

These networks never learn, remember Duck Dynasty? They thought it would be a one and done too. Isn’t it ironic that their show got cancelled to over a provocative statement? They just can’t accept that a conservative show can be so popular.

JusticeDelivered in reply to irv. | May 30, 2018 at 7:29 am

Valerie Jarrett was offended because the Planet of the Apes woman is far better looking that her.
The comment was funny, ABC being stupid enough to to cancel the show is funny, it is an incredibly expensive mistake on their part.

“…abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values” I thought those things were Roseanne’s intended claim to fame.

Clearly, “speaking truth to power” is only wonderful if it’s the ‘right’ power.

The Communist Party, yes. The Brotherhood, no. She has no connection to the Brotherhood (or as far as I can tell to any Moslems, Shia or Sunni) from before she hooked up with the 0bamas.

The Brotherhood agent in the 0bama White House was Abedin, not Jarrett, and Abedin was a Clinton loyaist, no connection to Jarrett at all.

Can you give any defense at all for dmacleo, maxillion, and Fen, any reason why they are not filthy disgusting liars? If not, then what’s your problem with my saying so? I realize the double-standard in play here. Those folks are perfectly safe. Rosanne made the mistake of posting something derogatory towards a protected class, 0bama’s closest advisor.

She’s disgusting. It’s bad enough to even think such rubbish, but to say it in a public forum?

The problem is that—because of Barr’s unmitigated stupidity and insensitivity—she’s added more fuel to the fires of racism in this country. Don’t these people understand what they’re doing?

Kimmel is just a jerk and has NOT been funny for a long, long time. He thinks that his words came down from the mountain – when they really came up from the pit.

Maybe another network offered more money for the show and this was her way of getting out of her ABC contract. Nothing in Hollywood is to be observed without adequate skepticism.

Keith Obermann and the members of The View could not be reached for comment.

As Kurt Schlichter has said, “You’ll really hate playing by the same rules that you put on us normal.” Let’s play ball.

Funny how fast this happened. Not suggesting any conspiracy. But given how much revenue ABC just threw away, the haste is pretty noteworthy.

When business’ are no longer interested in making money, is when you should no longer patronize them. I don’t give two fucks what WalMart’s (or any business’) ideology is. If they foist their political or idealogical views on me, I have been around long enough to know that they won’t make it in business and I should quickly remove my patronage.

MaggotAtBroadAndWall | May 29, 2018 at 3:49 pm

Disney’s subsidiary ESPN just re-hired the vile, grotesque worm Keith Ogremann. I bet his twitter has tweets that are “…abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values”.

It only ever goes one way.

YellowGrifterInChief in reply to MaggotAtBroadAndWall. | May 29, 2018 at 9:30 pm

It goes both ways. You either can’t see it or don’t want to. The Dixie Chicks are gone and Bill Maher got fired from his ABC show called ‘Politically Correct’ for agreeing with Dinesh D’Souza (of all people) that the 9/11 terrorists were not cowards.

Oh yeah, the Smothers Bros were cancelled after numerous battles with network including Pete Seeger being censored.

Come to think of it, there was a whole generation writers and actors who were blacklisted during the McCarthy. Whether you think the blacklist was justified or not, you cannot deny that they were censored.

Could you people drop the ‘Double Standard’ and ‘hypocrisy’ complaints? They a specious arguments and sound like whining. Both sides do it and both sides complain about it. If you can’t see that you are incredibly ignorant.

MaggotAtBroadAndWall in reply to YellowGrifterInChief. | May 30, 2018 at 9:55 am

You routinely demonstrate an amazing obtuseness with your comments. Disney’s double standards and hypocrisy ARE the issue.

None of the historic examples you cite involve an organization firing someone for one reason while almost simultaneously hiring someone else who has engaged in substantially similar conduct.

In this case, ABC said it fired Roseanne for making statements that are “abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values”. Yet just a few days earlier, ESPN, another Disney property, re-hired Keith Ogremann, a man with a long known history of statements that are “abhorrent” and “repugnant”. Bob Iger, Disney’s Chairman, tweeted he approved of Roseanne’s firing but he did not step in to prevent the hiring of Ogremann. If the principle is that people with a history of making “abhorrent and repugnant” comments should not be employed as on air talent at Disney properties, then why did he allow Ogremann to be employed?

Ogremann is employed because Disney/Iger is a hypocrite applying a double standard.

YellowGrifterInChief in reply to MaggotAtBroadAndWall. | May 30, 2018 at 11:04 am

Iger either is a hypocrite or he simply doesn’t agree that Keith Olbermann makes statements that are “abhorrent” and “repugnant”.

You appear to be obtuse or perhaps just disingenuous. What difference does the stated reason for her show’s cancellation make when everyone knows the real reason? He may even have chosen the reason for contractual reasons.

Your double standard consists of denying that Iger is a capitalist. If he felt he could make money with Roseanne she would still be planning her 2nd season.

If anything, Iger might be considered courageous. He risks the ire of Trump – a man who is notorious for his vindictiveness. In the examples I gave, the networks could be perceived as courting the favor of the government.

First they came for Han Solo and I said nothing, then they came for that big mouth Roseanne Barr and I said ‘ ABC had the right’ to fire such a ‘toxic’ human being, then they came for me because I had commented at LI.

The time has come for common sense Free Speech reform.

1) Ban Twitter
2) Boycott any business associated with ACLU
3) 30 day waiting period for a Facebook post
4) limit high capacity editorialists to 1 article a month.

No. She’s the one with the prob, as she admitted. There is no way to translate humor on Twitter, and she should have realized that.

As for Kimmel, it’s not about if he’s funny or not, or his pontifications, but his racism.

Social problems occur when people are just smart enough to understand that they are not smart enough to make the grade. That causes considerable resentment.

So much for the jobs that had been created by the show.

More Streisand Effect. This will call attention to the joke and to the “victim” of the joke.

Not to mention calling attention to all the liberals who make crude jokes. MeToo, anyone? How did that work out?

It was bad, but far less offensive than what many people who still have contracts have written about Trump, Pence, Palin, W Bush, Condi Rice, etc. Almost none of them have even bothered to apologize, let alone had their contracts canceled anyway. The only exception I can think of is Katy Griffin, and her stunt was an order of magnitude more offensive than this.

There *may* be a little bit of Hillary-Kicking going on here too. I’ve noticed how *every* news story on this (top of each hour) makes absolute certain to say the exact quote they considered so terrible and offensive. I like how they called it a racist comment. MB is not a race… nor is Islam a race. Since when is Planet of the Apes racist???? That the perpetually offended screamed it was racist says a LOT more about them than what Rosanne said about VJ. And since when is VJ a protected flower? Since when did comedians not push buttons and make crude jokes? Did no one know what Rosanne’s stand up act was??

She triggered them, but good. I’m only sorry she apologized.

Milhouse, you seem to very eager to play technicalities when it suits your argument but here you are using implications.

Can you definitively argue that she was comparing Jarrett to an ape? It could’ve been anything in that movie that she was making a reference to. She didn’t say that Jarett was a cross between a Muslim and an ape, rather than it was between the Muslim Brotherhood and the Planet of the Apes.

Henry Hawkins in reply to Milhouse. | May 30, 2018 at 11:25 am

Milhouse is correct. One way to test a racial slur is to see if it’s ever used against other races. Are whites ever compared to or referred to as ‘apes’? Are Asians? Hispanics? Nope. Just blacks, ergo racist.

Barre was clearly calling Jarrett a cross between a Muslim and an ‘ape’, meaning a black. How that’s not racist, I do not know.

Anyone who watched the original series already knew the show was not an example of conservatism.

    maxmillion in reply to daniel_ream. | May 30, 2018 at 2:15 am

Maybe you ought to figure out that real conservatives have broad tastes, and as such they find value in many things that others might say don’t seem to be all that conservative

I gotta say that I really don’t care about any of this. I have no idea what set Barr off, but nothing that she tweeted was overly offensive, though much of it was inaccurate. It certainly was not enough for a commercial television network to cancel a hugely popular television show [#3 in total viewers and #3, with a 5.0, in the 18-49 demographic]. in the past, such things were usually handled by simply claiming that the person making the statements had an alcohol or drug problem [which clearly made that person a victim and excused any and all of their actions in the entertainment industry] and they were bundled off to a spa in Palm Springs or Vegas for a few weeks. So, to see the network ax this show within hours of these tweets indicates that there was something else at work in this decision.

I suspect, that the show was picked up and expected to appear supportive of Trump but was expected to fail miserably, being cancelled after only a few shows. Thereby proving that the nation does not like Trump and that the Presidency was stolen from Clinton. This did not happen. So, when Barr tweeted this weekend, ABC executives saw the perfect opportunity to wrap themselves in social righteousness and ax the show without teeing off their shareholders. After all, one does not shoot its best producing milk cow simply because it is white.

    YellowGrifterInChief in reply to Mac45. | May 29, 2018 at 9:41 pm

They do if the sponsors go “Bye, bye”. Apparently the show was about to stop producing green milk.

I doubt there was any boycott by advertisers. After all, when you have a solid 17.5 million viewers every week, advertisers will be lining up to purchase time. And, the show is on re-runs for several weeks. So, there was ample time to redeem Barr and save the show.

No, this reaction was just waiting for the trigger. And, for whatever reason Barr provided that.

        YellowGrifterInChief in reply to Mac45. | May 29, 2018 at 10:54 pm

From Forbes aka the Capitalist’s Tool The Day Roseanne Discovered What ‘Brand Safety’ Means

If you bothered to check, there are stories by non-partisan Variety and others speculating that this was about ad dollars.

So, here is the skinny on the Rosanne advertisers. Rosanna advertisers were being charged for air time as advertisers on other, more established shows, from the get-go. Usually, advertisers pay less for time on a new, unproven show than they would pay for similar time on a show with an established viewership. This was not the case with Rosanne. Yet, there was no indication that potential advertisers were going to abandon the show, especially after its impressive opening season run. The point? Despite advertising rates rates which should actually have discouraged advertisers from supporting the show, it was a success anyway. Now, if there were valid business reasons for cancelling the show, its cancellation would have been announced last week, along with the rest of the cancellations, and that did not happen. This cancellation had nothing to do with any alleged business problems.

Now, one thing to remember about most of these articles attempting to paint this cancellation as solely business related [including the Variety article] is to note that they are being published AFTER the cancellation, not before. Quick, call the spin doctor. This was the number 3 show in terms of viewership and within the target demographic, for the 2018 season. There were no reported production problems. Advertisers were paying top dollar for time. Remember how both Hannity and Ingraham were going to be driven off the air by a withdrawal of advertiser support? didn’t happen, did it? Why? because most advertisers advertise so that people will buy their products and make money for them. Audience numbers attract advertisers to shows, not ideology. So, to suddenly have people claiming that advertisers were leaving the show and placing it in financial trouble, before the Barr tweets, or that no advertisers would be interested in three or four months, when the show resumed, is without foundation.

She forgot to use the Joy Reid excuse. Her first mistake was apologizing for it. If she’d just claim that her twitter got hacked. It’d been ok. Hire a forensic technician to concoct a fake story.

Ok maybe not. No free passes for any Trump supporters.

    YellowGrifterInChief in reply to c0cac0la. | May 29, 2018 at 11:02 pm

If you want to claim you were hacked, you have to disavow the tweets. What is the difference between that and apologizing?

BTW, she only apologized for the 1 tweet. There were others that were weird or defamatory. Maybe someone will sue and take her blue-collar Hawaiian estate.

Aw, Trump supporters don’t get any free passes. You are a perfect Trump sucker. You don’t know anything about the new swamp he has created for his dues paying supporters.

Not next season, but the year after, I bet Fox will pick up Roseanne’s show.

buckeyeminuteman | May 30, 2018 at 6:21 am

Roseanne Barr should have never been put in front of a camera after her disgusting rendition of the national anthem. If you have now gotten fooled twice by Roseanne, shame on you.

clayusmcret | May 30, 2018 at 6:23 am

I’m not a Roseanne fan, never watched her new show and didn’t plan to. However, if ABC is going to cancel Roseanne’s show for her crude joke remarks, they better get started cancelling a whole lot of other shows for their liberal actors’ crude and not-in-jest comments routinely made at conservatives.

If you see racism where none was referenced, that’s a you problem.

Henry Hawkins | May 30, 2018 at 11:27 am

Roseanna has been a loose cannon since her days as a stand-up comedienne. This is all utterly predictable and mundane by the record she’s had.
