ABC Axes Roseanne’s Hit Show After Her Tweets Disparaging Obama Alum, Valerie Jarrett
“Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” said ABC.
Tuesday, ABC announced it was cancelling Roseanne Barr’s hit TV show after the actress made less than kind remarks about former Obama advisor, Valerie Jarrett.
Barr tweeted, “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.” After intense backlash, Barr clarified, saying she was joking.
According to the Washington Times, Barr deleted the tweet:
Her tweet referred to Ms. Jarrett, who is black, as a product of the Muslim Brotherhood and “Planet of the Apes.” The tweet appears to have been deleted.
Ms. Jarrett served as senior adviser to former President Barack Obama.
Comic Wanda Sykes, who was a consulting producer for the show, announced that she would not return to work on the program.
The show is on hiatus for the summer after wrapping up the season last week.
Barr apologized for her tweet and announced she was leaving Twitter.
Roseanna has a long history of off-color and somewhat offensive stunts.
“Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” said ABC entertainment president.
The reboot of Roseanne raked in killer numbers, irking critics who were less than thrilled that a pro-Trump, middle-American show could do so well without their blessing.

Yes, it was in very bad taste. You would think any reasonable human knows that in the 21st century, twitter is going to be used against you and humor is never considered an acceptable defense.
But they didn’t cancel her show because of one less-than-nice tweet. They canceled her show because she didn’t hate Trump enough. The tweet was just an excuse.
She voted for Trump … she doesn’t hate Trump at all.

None of the historic examples you cite involve an organization firing someone for one reason while almost simultaneously hiring someone else who has engaged in substantially similar conduct.
In this case, ABC said it fired Roseanne for making statements that are “abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values”. Yet just a few days earlier, ESPN, another Disney property, re-hired Keith Ogremann, a man with a long known history of statements that are “abhorrent” and “repugnant”. Bob Iger, Disney’s Chairman, tweeted he approved of Roseanne’s firing but he did not step in to prevent the hiring of Ogremann. If the principle is that people with a history of making “abhorrent and repugnant” comments should not be employed as on air talent at Disney properties, then why did he allow Ogremann to be employed?
Ogremann is employed because Disney/Iger is a hypocrite applying a double standard.
Iger either is a hypocrite or he simply doesn’t agree that Keith Olbermann makes statements that are “abhorrent” and “repugnant”.

If anything, Iger might be considered courageous. He risks the ire of Trump – a man who is notorious for his vindictiveness. In the examples I gave, the networks could be perceived as courting the favor of the government.

It was bad, but far less offensive than what many people who still have contracts have written about Trump, Pence, Palin, W Bush, Condi Rice, etc. Almost none of them have even bothered to apologize, let alone had their contracts canceled anyway. Can you definitively argue that she was comparing Jarrett to an ape? It could’ve been anything in that movie that she was making a reference to. She didn’t say that Jarett was a cross between a Muslim and an ape, rather than it was between the Muslim Brotherhood and the Planet of the Apes.

I gotta say that I really don’t care about any of this. I have no idea what set Barr off, but nothing that she tweeted was overly offensive, though much of it was inaccurate. It certainly was not enough for a commercial television network to cancel a hugely popular television show [#3 in total viewers and #3, with a 5.0, in the 18-49 demographic]. in the past, such things were usually handled by simply claiming that the person making the statements had an alcohol or drug problem [which clearly made that person a victim and excused any and all of their actions in the entertainment industry] and they were bundled off to a spa in Palm Springs or Vegas for a few weeks. So, to see the network ax this show within hours of these tweets indicates that there was something else at work in this decision.
I suspect, that the show was picked up and expected to appear supportive of Trump but was expected to fail miserably, being cancelled after only a few shows. Thereby proving that the nation does not like Trump and that the Presidency was stolen from Clinton. This did not happen. So, when Barr tweeted this weekend, ABC executives saw the perfect opportunity to wrap themselves in social righteousness and ax the show without teeing off their shareholders. After all, one does not shoot its best producing milk cow simply because it is white.
They do if the sponsors go “Bye, bye”. Apparently the show was about to stop producing green milk.
I doubt there was any boycott by advertisers. After all, when you have a solid 17.5 million viewers every week, advertisers will be lining up to purchase time. And, the show is on re-runs for several weeks. So, there was ample time to redeem Barr and save the show.
No, this reaction was just waiting for the trigger. And, for whatever reason Barr provided that.

If you bothered to check, there are stories by non-partisan Variety and others speculating that this was about ad dollars.
So, here is the skinny on the Rosanne advertisers. Rosanna advertisers were being charged for air time as advertisers on other, more established shows, from the get-go. Usually, advertisers pay less for time on a new, unproven show than they would pay for similar time on a show with an established viewership. This was not the case with Rosanne. Yet, there was no indication that potential advertisers were going to abandon the show, especially after its impressive opening season run. The point? Despite advertising rates rates which should actually have discouraged advertisers from supporting the show, it was a success anyway. Now, if there were valid business reasons for cancelling the show, its cancellation would have been announced last week, along with the rest of the cancellations, and that did not happen. This cancellation had nothing to do with any alleged business problems.
Now, one thing to remember about most of these articles attempting to paint this cancellation as solely business related [including the Variety article] is to note that they are being published AFTER the cancellation, not before. Quick, call the spin doctor. This was the number 3 show in terms of viewership and within the target demographic, for the 2018 season. There were no reported production problems. Advertisers were paying top dollar for time. Remember how both Hannity and Ingraham were going to be driven off the air by a withdrawal of advertiser support? didn’t happen, did it? Why? because most advertisers advertise so that people will buy their products and make money for them. Audience numbers attract advertisers to shows, not ideology. So, to suddenly have people claiming that advertisers were leaving the show and placing it in financial trouble, before the Barr tweets, or that no advertisers would be interested in three or four months, when the show resumed, is without foundation.
She forgot to use the Joy Reid excuse. Her first mistake was apologizing for it. If she’d just claim that her twitter got hacked. It’d been ok. Hire a forensic technician to concoct a fake story.
Ok maybe not. No free passes for any Trump supporters.
If you want to claim you were hacked, you have to disavow the tweets. What is the difference between that and apologizing?

People are asking for her character to be killed off and continue the show. Some of the shows’ actors made decent money from the show and I guess still do unless the reruns are dumped. You can’t tell me that they never heard Roseanne cross lines.
