Portland Bar Hosted ‘Reparations Happy Hour’

Portland Bar Hosted ‘Reparations Happy Hour’

I have no words….

I honestly have no idea where to even start with this whole thing. A bar in Portland, OR, hosted a Reparations Happy Hour where “blacks, brown and indigenous people” received $10 from white people who.

The event excluded white people.

From The New York Times (emphasis mine):

Brown Hope, a local activist organization, wanted the event, which was held on Monday, to be a space for people of color in a mostly white city to meet one another, discuss policy issues and plan potential action.

While it was far from the full-scale reparations sought by some as penance for the horrors of slavery and continuing racial injustice, Cameron Whitten, the 27-year-old activist who organized the event, said there was one similarity: It made attendees feel as if their pain were valued and understood.

“It was only $10, but when I saw them I saw their eyes light up,” he said. “What I saw there was that people felt like they were finally seen.”

Mr. Whitten said he hoped the event, in addition to building community, would call attention to reparations, the concept that black people should be financially compensated for the generations of trauma that preceded them.

Valued and understood because you received $10 from an anonymous white person? I thought the left had ideals of FORWARD and PROGRESS. I thought the left complains that the right lives too much in the past. It looks like it’s the other way around.

Disgraced former Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) introduced a bill in Congress last year “that would study reparations proposals.” Ron Daniels, the president of the Institute of the Black World 21st Century, believes that reparations will help “America to ‘fully heal itself.'”

Economist Robert Browne estimated at one time that “a fair value for reparations of $1.4 trillion to $4.7 trillion and wrote that reparations should ‘restore the black community to the economic position it would have had if it had not been subjected to slavery and discrimination.'”

Not all black people agreed with this idea:

No, I don’t owe you anything like no one owes me anything. If we truly want to move FORWARD and CHANGE then stop living in the past. Learn from said past, but quit dwelling on it.

Sarcasm font on: What a great idea. I will personally pledge $1,000,000 to each slave that I’ve owned. Never mind that I have never owned a slave or have a million dollars. Good luck.

I am happy to pay the with high grade, fresh organic fertilizer. One tome peer persona of color, deposited upon them.

“People of Color are POWERFUL.” Well gee. Prove it by not playing the victim and emphasizing your “color.” There are plenty of “people of color” who, by their own efforts, have shown themselves to be, in fact, powerful. Follow their example.

All people are people of color – unless they’re albinos.

In the black community people routinely discriminate against each other over degree of blackness. They know that lighter skinned blacks tend to be smarter.

You were doing fine, until you got into that second sentence.

I do find it odd that people, especially liberals, who believe vehemently in science and evolution will never admit any potential difference in intelligence, statistically and minor, between the races.

(Pssst… first paragraph, second sentence needs fix):

“A bar in Portland, OR, hosted a Reparations Happy Hour where “blacks, brown and indigenous people” received $10 from white people who.”

Note this occurs in a business setting, a bar. Marketing, virtue signaling, propaganda, and profiteering, all in one ugly little stew.

Nut-Burgers!

If we truly want to move FORWARD and CHANGE

That’s a very big “if”.

I say, let’s have more self-segregation by lefty knuckleheads.
No whites allowed days at Evergreen State College, no whites allowed at graduations and proms. No whites allowed at an ongoing event paid for by the sufferers of white guilt. /s/

I remember the days when a huge “reparation” was paid to certain indian tribes in Oregon. The businesses had what locals called “white man’ prices and “indian prices.” The tribal members blew through every dime in short order, accomplishing two things: a prompt return to their poverty and returning the windfall to the “white man’s” economy, of course at the taxpayers expense.

A similar thing happened to the coastal tribe(s) in northwest Washington State around the same time.

The money beggars will never achieve economic independence/parity as long as they keep using drugs and continue to refuse to embrace individual responsibility while embracing socialism. They are playing a sick, delusional joke on themselves.

notamemberofanyorganizedpolicital | May 28, 2018 at 12:48 pm

This reminds me.

Don’t protitutes “invite” johns to pay for their drinks?

I hate not having the source at hand, but read many years ago a piece by an economist who compared the economic well being of American blacks vs those still in Africa, and concluded that having an ancestor snatched (or actually sold off by the real African princes who everyone claims were “their” relatives) was the best thing that could have happened to the family line. Across the scale, American blacks are vastly better off than the spectrum which still live in Africa. So reparations is bullshit, period.

Of course, suggesting that reparations aren’t owed is racist. But I can live with that. 😉

amatuerwrangler in reply to MajorWood. | May 28, 2018 at 2:21 pm

Along this line, a couple things jumped out at me.
From that economist’s reparation estimate, “restore the black community to the economic position it would have had if it had not been subjected to slavery and discrimination.” This led me to think of whether this wold mean the descendants of slaves would live the same life style enjoyed by their counterparts in equatorial Africa. They would never have seen this hemisphere if not for the slave traders of England and Portugal. Remember, the United States of America did not exist until 1789.

Another was a tweet railing about “arresting and shooting” for just living their lives. This must be hyperbole as I doubt they really think that robbing, burglarizing and fighting with the police is really “living life as best we can”.

I also wonder just how much of those Al Hamiltons actually made it out the door at the end of the night, rather than got cycled back into the coffers of the establishment. “Spent $400.” Ha, they merely primed the pump. J M Keynes lives.

Valerie in reply to MajorWood. | May 28, 2018 at 3:06 pm

The French made the Germans pay reparations for WWI. How well did that work out for them?

Slavedrivers replaced screwdrivers.

The first thing that blacks who are unhappy should do is except responsibility for their failures and start making better choices. Chose to work for their success instead of blaming others for their failures. Work for an education. Work to support themselves and their families. Obey the law and respect others who do. This is the path to success. It takes work and integrity, lazy people will fail.

The Friendly Grizzly | May 28, 2018 at 1:12 pm

I hope every white who patronized this bar before this event have stopped going. But, this being Portland, where the sanctimony runs like a river, they probably gained MORE customers.

The Civil War WAS reparation. From Lincoln’s second Inaugural address, describing what seemed to be a just God’s terrible purpose, that the war would continue: “until every drop of bloid spilled with the lash is repaid by another spilled by the sword.”

650,000 whites died to end black slavery. And these lunatic leftist whites think blacks should hate America? They should feel OWED by the race that ended the age old institution of slavery that fell hardest on black shoulders?

How about whites charging blacks for freeing them from slavery? That would make as much sense.

My German-born great-great-grandfather spent a year in Andersonville. My family owes nothing.

      tlcomm2 in reply to LibraryGryffon. | May 29, 2018 at 2:54 pm

Free room and board for a year, courtesy of your Southern brethren. Sounds like you owe Southern Folk a bit of reparations for your relative living off the largesse of those kind folks 😉

Just another form of begging.

Apparently 600,000 lives sacrificed in the Civil War wasn’t enough.

But, this affords a bunch of young leftists from well-to-do families an opportunity to feel good about themselves.

History lesson time, boys and girls. Into the way-back machine to South Africa in the 1980s. The world is aghast at APARTHEID. The black majority and, to a lesser extent, the Asian minority were being socially oppressed by the minority white population. People worldwide were outraged. Now back to the present. Today, the black majority is systematically driving the remaining white population out of South Africa; which has been reduced from a first world country to a second [possibly third] world country, under black management.

On to the US where Apartheid is being tried again, this time against the Non-Hispanic, Caucasian, Judaeo-Christian population. So, based upon history, what can we ultimately expect? The oppressed majority will eventually drive the oppressive minority out of the country. And, as widespread as private firearm ownership is, in this country. I’m not so sure it is a good idea to go out of your way to threaten a heavily armed majority.

Welcome back to SHOW ME THE MONEY!

And let’s go to our newest contestant, Mark Brown!

(applause)

Now Mr Brown, as you know, we’ve run your DNA sample through our historical data set to determine the amount society owes you… Are you ready for the result?

DING!

(audience cheers)

That’s right Mark, your distant grandmother arrived in America in 1791 and was sold to a cotton plantation. Accumulated damages adjusted for inflation is …. 3.5 MILLION DOLLARS!

(cue happy music, audience cheers)

Mark: Thank you Fen. I just want to tell my mom back in Fresno: WE DID –

Well now hold on Mark, that’s not all. We also traced your line to a distant uncle named Marius.

Mark: oh WOW! (jumping up and down with joy)

And our records indicate that between 1625-1641, good old Uncle Marius captured and sold 56 fellow West Africans to Moslem and European slavers.

BZZZZZT!

(audience boos)

Which means you owe – Bob can you do the math for us, 56 times …

Bob: $178 million, Fen

Mark, you owe $174.5 million. Boys, take Mark backstage and help him find his checkbook.

And I’ll see you all next week on…

Audience: SHOW! ME! THE! MONEY!

(applause)

(cue exit soundtrack)

To be fair, most the black guys I know would be insulted by this stunt. They don’t buy into the Reparations nonsense to begin with, but idea of a $1O off coupon merely to assauge white guilt is an abomination.

I feel the same about 10% discounts for Veterans. Keep your damn money.

Can you imagine: “Did your grandparents die in Auswitch? We sympathize. And to prove it, the first ten callers will be entered for a chance to win this set of German steak knives”

Gremlin1974 | May 28, 2018 at 2:30 pm

I have had this discussion with several people who believe in “reparations”.

My first question is; “Reparations for what?”

Typical answer; “Slavery!”

Next Question; “Very well, for how long were you a slave?”

Typical Answer; “This is about my ancestors or something equally inane about the black race.”

Next question; “Ok so you were never a slave so you are attempting to get money for a living relative who was a slave? So who in your family was a slave…gee they must be pretty old!”

Typical Answer(s); “RACIST!” or “Something, Something, evil white people!”

Next question; “Calm down, geez. So you were never a slave but you expect someone to give you money in reparaton because your great great grandmother, who is no longer living, was a slave? Have you thought about going to the people who captured her and sold her into slavery?”

This is the point where the conversation usually breaks down completely.

    Milhouse in reply to Gremlin1974. | May 28, 2018 at 3:24 pm

Now hang on. If the grandparents were owed money, then the fact that they’re dead should make no difference. Debts owed to a deceased person descend to their heirs.

You’re on the right track, but took the wrong branch. Debts owed by a deceased person are limited to the extent of their estate. If your grandfather died owing $1M but only left $50K, the creditors get that $50K to split between them and are out the rest of their money.

So if someone can prove that you (e.g. a corporation, which is still “alive”) owned and mistreated his grandfather, then you owe compensation to the grandfather’s estate, to be divided among his heirs. But if it was your grandfather who owed the compensation the most you can be expected to cough up is whatever you got from his estate.

      Gremlin1974 in reply to Milhouse. | May 28, 2018 at 3:40 pm

True, however, there is no “slavery reparation that I am aware of. Also, most of the people who jump on the “reparations” wagon don’t even know if they had a family member who was a slave.

Also, there is the fact that my family wasn’t even in this country until well after the civil war, that one always gets them as well. My family lived in Scotland and Germany until WWI on one side and WWII on the other, but they can never seem to answer why I should own reparations, lol.

        Milhouse in reply to Gremlin1974. | May 28, 2018 at 3:47 pm

most of the people who jump on the “reparations” wagon don’t even know if they had a family member who was a slave.

Well, exactly. Take 0bama, for instance; if he has any slaves in his ancestry they’re on his mother’s side. Meanwhile there are almost certainly slave-owners on both sides of his ancestry. Possibly even slave-traders, though their victims would have been shipped to Arabia, not to the Americas.

Morning Sunshine | May 28, 2018 at 2:37 pm

Ok. I have two parents.
Out of my mother’s 4 grandparents, three come from lines that arrived in the United States AFTER slavery was over. The 4th, came from England in the 1600s, to New England area. Puritan Yankee stock.
My father has two parents. One came from Indiana, and all her family from the North before the Civil War. The other’s ancestor’s we know owned slaves in the South, and can trace back to Jamestown.

So, do I owe reparations for all my white ancestors, or just the line that came from the South? Do my northern ancestors’ spilt blood in the Civil War cancel the slaveholder’s? Do I owe for those that had nothing to do with slavery? I am so confused over this reparations thing.

oh, and my kids have native Alaskan ancestors. Do they get more or less for that? Of course, that is probably also mixed with Russian, so now I am really confused!

It is very sad that there are both whites and blacks who feel good about themselves after separating people by race (as all members of the KKK desired to) and then patting themselves on their own backs over giving or receiving $10. This behavior is worse than childish. It is disturbing.

A reparations event at a bar or restaurant? More immediately, I would like to know when black people are going to make reparations for all the white waiters and waitresses they’ve stiffed far more recently than any slavery experience.

A lot of black people make a big point of stiffing white waiters and waitresses, particularly when they are in groups.

I am sure this does wonders for the attitudes of harmless young people who have never held any kind of position of power in society.

What in special hell… Reparations Happy Hour? Really?? How about addressing inequalities in pay, housing and education? You know, something that’ll make a meaningful difference. How about stop shooting/arresting us for just going about our business trying to live our best life?

But that isn’t happening, so if someone is nice enough to buy you a drink have the grace to say thank you and accept.

bobinreverse | May 28, 2018 at 4:04 pm

Probably just me but would think that percentage of blacks in favor of reparations would kinda similar to percent who votes Barry. Just saying.

Here’s my bottom line on reparations:

(1) If you personally (either because you’re a corporation or you’re 180 years old) owned slaves and mistreated them, and their descendants can be traced today, then you owe those descendants compensation for what you did. If you did not mistreat them, I don’t believe you should be expected to pay merely for having bought and owned what was then a lawful commodity; it’s enough that they were confiscated from you without you being compensated.

(2) If you personally did not own, let alone mistreat, any slaves, but you have assets that can be shown to be part of the estate of an ancestor who did own and mistreat slaves with traceable descendants, then you owe those descendants compensation up to the amount of what you still have from that ancestor. Anything you own that is not part of that ancestor’s estate is not responsible for their debt.

(3) If your ancestors were slaves and were mistreated you have the right to resent the owners who did that. You have no right to resent even their descendants, let alone people whose only crime is that their skin bears a superficial resemblance to that of those owners. You also have the right to resent those people in Africa who enslaved and sold your ancestors in the first place. You do not have the right to falsely accuse any European of doing that.

(4) If your ancestors owned and mistreated slaves, you may owe their descendants compensation as above, but you do not owe them an apology and should feel guilty. You owe absolutely nothing to anyone not descended from your ancestors’ slaves. And above all you owe nothing and should never apologize to the descendants of the Africans who sold your ancestors their slaves.

Milhouse in reply to Milhouse. | May 28, 2018 at 4:09 pm

Oops. Make that “and should not feel guilty”.

tphillip in reply to Milhouse. | May 29, 2018 at 6:44 am

    >If your ancestors owned and mistreated slaves, you may owe their descendants compensation as above

Wow. The debts of the father are inherited by the son. That’s some positively medieval thinking there.

Do you also advocate the right of “prima nocta”. I mean, if you’re going to be a progressive thinker here and go back in time to justify your world views why stop at repatriations?

Milhouse in reply to tphillip. | May 29, 2018 at 10:49 am

Yes, you ignorant piece of sh*t, a person’s debts are not automatically erased by his death; his estate remains responsible for them, forever. If your ancestors owed money, anything that remains of their estate is responsible for paying it. Therefore you are responsible, up to the amount of what you still have from that ancestor. This is not even slightly controversial. The fact that you would dispute it speaks either to your ignorance, or more likely to your black, hateful heart that makes you perceive this topic differently from any ordinary debt. Either way, go hide your disgusting face in shame.

Liberals are stuck on the welfare state.

How demeaning to black people. And how embarrassing each black person should be for accepting pity.

Henry Hawkins | May 28, 2018 at 7:15 pm

In 9,331 BC, my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather Ogg was captured and enslaved by a neighboring band of cavemen near present-day Brules.

Whom do I bill?

If the North in 1861 had known what is happening now, I bet there would have been a peaceful separation and a “good luck” to the South.

Reparations for injustices which occurred hundreds of years ago. What a scam. Virtually every cultural, religious and racial group in the world has had members who were slaves somewhere, at one point or another. Every group has had ancestors who were brutally murdered, raped and, in some cases, eaten. Do the races, cultures and religions who exist today own these people reparations? And, what is the “statute of limitations” for reparations? Weeks, months, years, decades, centuries, millennia? Apparently the lives of the hundreds of thousands of men and women, as well as the millions of dollars, which the United States spent, which resulted in the manumission of slaves, was not enough. Nor were the trillions of dollars that this country has spent in race-based welfare and affirmative action enough. The question then becomes what is enough? And the next question becomes will anyone pay it or simply remove those demanding it?

Isn’t there a statute of limitations? I would think that it would have already passed after 180 years. Add to that that it was Africans who made people slaves and sold them. Furthermore, every black living in the USA is a million times better off then they would be in Africa.

harleycowboy | May 29, 2018 at 9:27 am

‘restore the black community to the economic position it would have had if it had not been subjected to slavery and discrimination.’”
So you would still be in Africa then? How’s that place working out?
No reparations without repatriation.
“a fair value for reparations of $1.4 trillion to $4.7 trillion…” We demand compensation for the Civil War.

We never owned slaves but every single one of my great grandfather’s brothers and him fought to end slavery. Five brothers sent to war one returned. What’s the dollar value of blood?
