Obama has lost roughly 40% of the Democratic primary vote to an imprisoned felon in West Virginia, to “uncommitted” in Kentucky, and to a Tennesee lawyer who “could fit snugly on Dylan Ratigan’s MSNBC show” and who no one in Arkansas likely had heard of before (and who is suing for his delegates).
All of this gave rise to what is one of the great lines of this campaign season, maybe ever, from James Taranto:
Nobody is challenging Barack Obama in the Democratic primaries this year–and is doing surprisingly well.
All of this also led Chris Cillizza to note that Democrats are whispering, Is it racism?
That President Obama lost roughly 40 percent of the vote in Democratic primaries in Arkansas, Kentucky and West Virginia over the last two weeks has drawn massive national headlines.
Those headlines have drawn a collective eyeroll from Democrats — and many others who closely follow national politics — who ascribe the underperformance by the incumbent to a very simple thing: racism.
No, none of these Democrats are willing to put their name to that allegation — either generally or for this story. But, it is, without question the prevalent viewpoint they hold privately.
They argue that conservative white Democrats — particularly those in the South and Appalachia — don’t want to vote for an African American for president and, therefore, are willing to cast a ballot for almost anyone else up to and including an incarcerated felon. (Keith Judd, we are looking at you.)
Obviously it’s at least part racism.
After all, Nobody is the most racist guy in America.

Seriously – I think the Law Of Diminishing Returns kicked in a long time ago. People simply don’t care anymore.
All we have to do is consider Obama’ policies such as ObamaCare, the war on coal, limited drilling of Federal lands, poor economy, Keystone XL pipeline, and a foreign policy of dissing our friends and kowtowing to our enemies. Once we consider those policies, ask if Obama were white, would he still face the same headwinds. The answer is yes. Ergo, it is not racism, it is Obama’s liberalism that is the problem.
One has to wonder how many of those racists voted for Obama in 2008.

This conclusion is clearly absurd and those Democrats who attribute the fall of Obama in the eyes of the populace to racism simply do not want to recognize the man’s failure in everything he has done. His “gutsy call” to get bin Laden was actually made by Panetta as Obama was playing golf when the decision was made.

The entire premise of the Democrat Party is based upon identity politics – racism chief among them.
Going all the way back to the Civil War, the Democrats have been at the vanguard of racism, overt and covert, from the Confederacy through the reign of Robert Byrd in the KKK.

Using the race card implies failure. Success needs no excuse.
Obviousy, it has nothing whatever to do with the failure of his policies, so they must come up with a different explanation.
Rather than racism, it is more a matter of this: Those who voted for Obama in 2008 just to see if they could do it (elect a black as President) recognize what a shallow reason it was to vote for a person to any office, let alone the presidency. And, they are no longer satisfied with the outcome.
Exactly. People were being “racist” by electing an unqualified nobody in 2008 and waxing euphoric on the nonsense. At this point, it’s hitting home, I think, to a lot of Dems that this country really is in trouble and it isn’t time for make-believe.
Re the left’s new ‘racism’ argument:

What I don’t get is the response of the leading Democrats to the votes in Arkansas and Kentucky. Calling your own primary voters ‘racists’ (40% of them, anyway) is not a strategy that gets them back into your column in November.
Not that anyone expects Arkansas or Kentucky to go to Obama in November, but this is the sort of language that reverberates throughout the party. Does Axelrod not understand that there are Democrats in every state that have the same concerns as the voters of Arkansas and Kentucky? That this is an election that might come down to a few key precincts and districts?
It may be that (as ALman notes) a number of people who voted for Obama in 2008 have decided that they’re not satisfied and that they’ll vote for someone else — or no one — in 2012. But the leaders of the Democratic Party seem to be pushing these folks away actively.
Why?

40% of voters in Democratic primaries who presumably voted for Obama last time around in the general elections aren’t voting for him in the primary so it is racism. 95% of blacks vote for him and it is… what?

All of you – please be quiet – as Churchill said “When your enemy is busy making a mistake, don’t interrupt him”. The last thing we want is for the Democrat party to realize how out of touch they are, and then come up with a winning strategy for November.
The racism theme has become hackneyed. One of the PACs should create a video, perhaps a long version as well as a shorter version, of nothing but clips of racism accusations, and only those against critics of the president (the pool of accusations is very, very deep in general). The point would be to show how utterly common and unsubstantiated it is, akin perhaps to a child calling an adversary “stupid”, and how it is used to stifle any real discussion or debate. There must be hundreds of examples of criticisms made, supported by facts – which a video could highlight, where the reaction of the supportive media and party leadership (e.g. Wasserman-Schultz) is the empty cry.
Those who haven’t been numbed to it all yet would likely get there were they to see it all in a series.
