Just Published “The Law of Self Defense, 3rd Ed.” #1 at Amazon

Just Published “The Law of Self Defense, 3rd Ed.” #1 at Amazon

Launched just last week, the 3rd Edition is already #1 in Criminal Law new releases at Amazon

I know many of you have been wondering where the heck I’ve run off to from the pages of Legal Insurrection, so I want to immediately dispel the most common rumor:  No, Professor Jacobson and I have not broken up. 🙂

More seriously, the reason for my absence has been that I’ve been hard at work finishing the thoroughly updated newest edition of my book, “The Law of Self Defense, 3rd Edition,” which I’m proud to announce published last week.  Further, I learned this morning that we’ve already achieved the number one position in Criminal Law new releases at Amazon.com, at that we’re #6 in the Criminal Law category overall. And today we also became #1 in the Hunting & Shooting category at Amazon.

In terms of what’s changed from the previous 2nd Edition published in 2013, all the legal content has been updated to 2016, we’ve added about 30% more explanations and illustrative examples, and of course it’s another re-write so it’s simply a better written book.

Law of Self Defense back cover bullet points

I’m pleased to say that the book is flying off the shelves–indeed, we’re having some modest difficulties getting the printer to produce them fast enough.  To put things in context, we haven’t seen sales of this volume since the height of the Zimmerman trial.

This is, of course, a good problem for us to have.  In the interest of further exacerbating this problem, and in appreciation to Professor Jacobson for providing such a wonderful forum and for the Legal Insurrection community for proving so wonderful an audience, we’re extending a 20% off discount: simply apply LEGAL at checkout to see the savings, as they say.  (Note that this coupon will work only at the Law of Self Defense website, and not at re-sellers of our book such as Amazon, NRA Store, Gun Digest, etc.)

Incidentally, that discount applies to everything at Law of Self Defense, not just the book.  Applied to “The Law of Self Defense, 3rd Edition,” it essentially gets you nearly free shipping.  Applied to our live seminars or online classes it’ll save you $30 to $50, depending on the class and options selected.  Applied to our Instructor Program, it’ll save you a solid $200–yep, dual Benjamins, as the kids say these days.

I’m sure we’ll keep the LEGAL discount code active for at least a month, so there’s no rush, but after that we usually let the codes expire.  Also, if you’d like a custom autograph, just mention as much in the comments box at checkout.

I expect the launch of the book will trigger a bit of a tsunami of radio and podcast interviews, and with the Professor’s consent I’ll post about those here as they happen.

On an entirely separate note, I’ll be attending the NRA Annual Meeting again this year.  It’s being held in Louisville KY from Friday, May 19 to Sunday, May 22.  I’m not speaking this year, it’s just a fun trip for me.  As I did last year, I’ll be traveling there by motorcycle, taking several days each way, and visiting with friends and family along the way.  This year I’ve allowed enough time to spend a day riding the Blue Ridge Parkway–a first for me, so very exciting.  I also plan to video blog my ride there and back, if that’s of interest, and if the technology gremlins allow.  I expect I’ll post those entries over at my own blog rather than here, as they won’t really be legal in context–just fun for folks to follow along, if they care to.

So, if you happen to be somewhere between Boston and Louisville next week or the following week and you see someone riding by looking much like the Michelin man on a big BMW motorcycle, give a wave–likely as not, that’s me.

GS (1)

And of course if you plan to be at the NRA Annual Meeting yourself, be sure to introduce yourself.  We’re a large community here, and it’s not too often we have the chance to meet in meatspace.

Congratulations on the new book, got it moved to the top of the “to buy list”.

    Thanks, much appreciated!

FYI, if you want an autographed copy, those can only come from us.

On the other hand, we charge $6 for shipping USPS Priority, and if you have Prime with Amazon, the shipping’s free.

It’s your call, doesn’t make much difference to us who you order from, just wanted you to be aware of the options.

Hey! Let’s print some window stickers that say “I just read Andrew Branca’s ‘Law of Self Defense.’ You have been Warned!”

Just ordered mine from the Professor’s Amazon link so while I don’t get an autographed copy, I do give the Professor a couple of coins to jingle in his “pocket”.

Do you know when Amazon will have the Kindle edition available?

Will there be an iBooks edition? I see a few other self-defense law books there, but not yours.

That’s weird… the Kindle edition appeared at Amazon while I was typing the question.

Kindle is available now. I believe we’re also planning to do Nook and iBook, but the formatting is a pain so those might be a while.

The 2nd Edition e-book was mostly available only as Kindle because we were involved with a special program with Amazon. We’re not doing that program with the 3rd Edition, so we’re free to have more varied e-book formats.

My view is that this is a must read for anyone who owns a gun that they may need to use in self defense. I have been amazed at how often I see and hear misinformation by people who should know better – such as those teaching concealed carry classes. Andrew sets up a framework that is very effective in determining when lethal force can be legally utilized in defense of self and others.

I am thinking of buying the new edition, after loaning out my previous edition several times, and not having gotten it back the last time. Should be interesting to see the differences.

Congratulations , I just got back into shooting after a brief hiatus, will order one when the kids spare me a dime.

I recommend this book to anyone who carries a gun or keeps one for home defense.

When I first red the book I was amazed at how much I didn’t know or understand. You can read all the statutes you want but like me most folks I didn’t understand that these laws are affected by court decisions i.e. case law that can change how that statute is enforced.

What I actually did was buy the book and then later bought the kindle edition, because it is much easier to carry around. (Plus I had Andrew sign my book during class so it now sits in a place of reverence upon my shelf.) The 2nd edition is still on my Kindle today a couple of years later and will be until I replace it with the 3rd edition.

Well done Andrew.
Thanks for doing what you do. I consider it a public service even though we do have to pay for the book!

And I just bought the 2nd edition a few months ago!

Just purchased my first firearm and in the process of taking my CCP class (waiting list was two months). I am getting this book!

Also Andrew, would be interested in your thoughts on what George Zimmerman has been up to with auctioning off the gun he used and his comments in interviews – the latest questioning the parenting skills of Martin’s parents. All I can say is I am a parent who lost a son to an accidental drowning and it is a heartbreak that never goes away. I wouldn’t want someone throwing it in my face. And the Martins used their son’s death as a means to enrich themselves which I find reprehensible – but dead is dead – can’t change that.

I was 100% behind Zimmerman during the trial but for some reason he can’t seem to get enough of his 15 minutes of fame. Wish he would just go away. I think he gives defenders of the 2nd amendment a bad name.

I’m getting a database error when I click on the links to the book, seminar, etc. . . Not sure if it is an issue on my end or not. It won’t stop me. I still thought I’d share none the less.
