Hamilton getting booted off the $10 bill and replaced with a woman
Leave Alexander Hamilton alone!
Up until Wednesday night, I figured the push to have a woman’s mug gracing American currency was nothing more than internet fun. Apparently, this is a thing that’s actually happening.
Late Wednesday evening, Benny Johnson and Justin Green of IJ Review reported the new $10 could be available as soon as 2020:
The Treasury Department is preparing to announce that they are putting a woman on the $10 bill, as a source has confirmed what appears to be a premature tweet.
Treasury Secretary Jack Lew will announce Thursday that the Bureau of Engraving and Printing will put a woman on the bill as soon as 2020.
The Treasury attempted to be female friendly in 1978 when they printed $1 coins featuring Susan B. Anthony’s face. Only 1/3 of the coins were circulated though. Despite the convenience of the $1 coin, the fad never really caught on.
When it comes to having a woman’s face on the cash I use to buy shoes, books, and americanos, I’m indifferent. It all spends the same.
If anything, I loathe the idea that because I’m a woman I’m supposed to applaud or champion all women firsts a la “it’s time a woman _____!” Being a woman and doing something a man did years before is not in itself an accomplishment. Likewise, slapping a woman’s face on a $10 bill isn’t a cause to celebrate.
Of the available jackasses printed on our cash (read: Andrew Jackson, though he knew how to throw a killer party), why replace Alexander Hamilton?! If there’s anything insulting about the latest attempt to feminize American cash, it’s that Hamilton is getting booted for a yet to be determined chick just so America can say we have a chick on our currency. LAME.
According to The Hill, the Treasury plans to crowd source suggestions for the new $10 bill:
Lew said Obama administration officials are seeking advice nationwide — including people who “aren’t comfortable using a hashtag as well as people who are comfortable using a hashtag.”
“We are going to be open to many ideas as we go forward consistent with the theme of democracy,” Lew said. “Our thinking is to select a woman who has played a major role in our history who represents the theme of democracy.”
Treasury Secretary Lew said Thursday, “the primary consideration was the security of the currency — and the $10 bill was next in line for an upgrade.”
Not only was Hamilton the first Treasury Secretary, he was ardently anti-slavery, and arguably one of the nation’s most crucial founding fathers. “An online petition earlier this year urged the administration to replace Jackson with abolitionist Harriet Tubman by 2020, the 100th anniversary of the constitutional amendment giving women the right to vote,” wrote USA Today. That would’ve been a noble cause — replacing a pro-slavery wild man with a female abolitionist.
But scrapping Alexander Hamilton? That’s simply poor taste.

I’d go for the twenty, and getting rid of the pig Jackson.
I’m with Glenn Reynolds as to a positive role model…
Harriet Tubman; kick-ass, gun-toting, Republican champion of civil rights!
Can’t go wrong with that.
Is it time to put Obama’s likeness on the three dollar bill?
The current regime will never remove Jackson. For all his faults [including a contempt for the Supreme Court and Constitution that he shares with the regime]; he was the founder of the Democrats. q.v. Jackson Day Dinners in every Democrat party branch in the country.
Anyone want to give odds against them putting Caitlyn Jenner on the $10 bill to replace Hamilton?
So let them take Hamilton off the $10 bill. When the Obama regime is defunct, then take Jackson off the $20 bill and replace him with Hamilton.
Bonus 1: Hamilton gets a promotion to a higher value bill.
Bonus 2: Reuse his original picture and eliminate new art fees.
I’m for [re]introducing new denominations with new faces.
$500 and $1,000 bills.
They should proceed with caution, as it is— they will have to remove every bit of money that has Tim Geitner’s signature on it by 2017.
Jenner can be the face of the $3 bill.
The obvious choice is Bo Derek, but that ain’t gonna happen.
Wrong…..a young Pamela Anderson from the neck to the navel.
But when she was young she was still Canadian.
Eh?
She didn’t become a US citizen until 2004.
Let’s ask Dudley Moore his opinion.
I’d be in favor of Monica Lewinski on a $3 Bill.
“Being a woman and doing something a man did years before is not in itself an accomplishment.”
Please point that out to Hillary and her supporters — they are still trying to find accomplishments.
“…a yet to be determined chick….select a woman who has played a major role in our history….”
I think they are waiting for Hillary’s
coronationelection.I have 4 boys and one daughter, all in grade school. When my youngest was born almost 11 years ago, the oldest was only 2 years, 8 months, thus 5 under 3.
Personally, I think this is a good idea. I don’t have an opinion on who should be replaced but I think for my daughter it’s a good idea. My opinion on this is almost entirely based on my sons being upset that in the reboot the Ghostbusters will be girls!
Isn’t this how Hillary wants to become president? First you must all agree that the next president must be a woman, then select only from among the women.
Oh! So your thinking is this is all in the service of “Madame” Hillary!
Democrats would and have already done that!
I consider it far more urgent to get God off our currency. Absent that, an image of Dr Madalyn Murray O’Hair, champion of religious rights, would be appropriate.
President Theodore Roosevelt was strongly opposed to putting “In God we trust” on currency. He thought it was blasphemous to put the name of the Deity on something as base as money.
“In God We Trust” on money cheapens both religion and politics.
Don’t we already have Barbara Bush on the $1 bill?
The $1 coin would have worked if they’d just stopped printing the $1 bill. That’s what they did in Canada.
Do you suppose it will be a generic woman or a woman in particular. Maybe Roosevelt, not sure what she did but hey, she’s been dead a long time and why not. How about Betsy Ross? She at least designed an American Flag. Florence Nightingale? Lizzie Borden? Martha Washington? Ruth Bader Ginsberg? Shirley Temple? Leah Organa?
Just a few suggestions.
I vote for Princess Leia…I have to ask this as I did below. I can’t understand how a 1$ coin is in any way more convenient than a 1$ bill?
They’re certainly tougher to tuck into a G-string!
I vote for Marilyn Mosby with her angry social justice face. That way she can remind me of my white privilege every time I buy something I don’t really deserve.
Hamilton was punk shot by Aaron Burr…of course he has to go.
Also, how is a 1$ coin in any way more convenient than a 1$ bill?
Although a $1 coin costs more to produce than a bill, coins stay in circulation much longer. The Treasury has long pushed $1 coins because in the long run, their costs would go down.
That’s based on the assumption that people will use them. I think that America has shown it doesn’t want to carry around a lot of heavy coins.
Thank you….someone else that gets it. Men carry wallets, wallets don’t like coins. Women’s wallets barely like change and only if the pocketbook is big enough to hold a large wallet.
Oh well, my dollar bills say American Express on them anyways (cash back bonus awards and all…the treasury has never given me cash back rebates on using their fake paper money so why not use plastic?)
Also, since the value of the dollar NEVER seems to be going up how are their long run costs actually going to save them much money? Buy cheaper now…that’s the fiat way!
“Hamilton was a punk”?
You Sir are an idiot.
Alexander was General Washington’s aide through the entire Revolution. Alexander led the bayonet charge up Redoubt 10 at Yorktown.
How dare you disparage his name and service.
I see this as another way to face fake, inflatable money with fake, inflatable paper.
“Likewise, slapping a woman’s face on a $10 bill isn’t a cause to celebrate.”
Isn’t it domestic violence?
The debate is about the amount, not who’s being replaced. If you put a woman’s face on a thousand dollar bill, it looks like you’re hiding her while trying to appease whomever is demanding it because thousand dollar bills aren’t common in public transactions. Same with hundred dollar bills, more common, but still not used a lot.
No, most of public cash traffic is in ones, fives, tens, and twentys. They aren’t going to replace George or Abe on the ones or fives, so it’s Hamilton or Jackson on the tens or twentys. Not sure why Hamilton over Jackson, but I do know that 90% of Americans couldn’t tell you who either of them were, so it probably doesn’t matter.
I disagree— once you put the $1k bill into circulation… RAP singers will no longer be all about the Benjamins.
The face on that bill rules all!
We could Roziel Doziel ( whatever the heck her name is If you are black , you can be green
The Rachel Dolezal $10 will look a lot whiter when you shine some light on it.
I know if you give women a 10 you will never see any change
As a Cherokee: F Jackson, replace with Tubman. Leave Hamilton alone.
How about Megan Fox that’s a 10
They should just put a toupe on old Ben Franklin.
When the new US government assumed the huge debts which the colonies had racked up during the Revolution, both Alexander Hamilton, the first Sec. of the Treasury, and his Democratic-Republican successor, Albert Gallatin, achieved prodigies in paying it down; although each achieved it in different ways.
Leave it to modern Washington, DC to remove a picture of a bona-fide financial genius from our money.
I think it would have to be Clara Barton, the “angel of the battlefield” during the Civil War. After the war she headed the Office of Missing Soldiers, founded the American Red Cross, worked for suffrage and civil rights, and was involved in a number of humanitarian projects.
I’d put Hillary on a two headed coin.
No, put her on the 50 cent piece.
A two-cent piece would be even better.
Was Aaron Burr available for comment? Otherwise, I nominate HRH Queen Elizabeth to adorn our currency.
Obama has got a point! After all, what value is there in having images of old white men, those terrible founders, on our currency.
With Obama’s radical transformation of this country, we need our new founders on our restyled currency. For example, Obama should replace old George W. on the one dollar bill, Michelle on the five dollar bill, Valerie J. on the 10-spot, and Biden on the 20-dollar bill.
All hail the collective!
I think it should Bella Abzug.
I was thinking Janet Reno.
Talk about increasing the velocity of money…!!!
Janet Reno naked?
I say we leave Alex on the currency but make everybody pretend he’s really a woman.
“But scrapping Alexander Hamilton? That’s simply poor taste.”
That’s probably the point. Hamilton is a much more key figure in US history than Jackson. Erasing history is an ardent need of the left.
Great: replace the founding father who just about created the American economic system. What bullsh-t. Hopefully, it’ll never happen.
How about just putting Hillary Rotten Clinton on a three-dollar bill?
Yes she could be Alexandra Hamilton,a little blush, some new nails
I have a photo of myself holding up a ten dollar bill in front of Hamilton’s birthplace on Nevis. I’m outraged, outraged I tell you.
I’m sure the selection of woman will be based on achievement rather than gender, like the woman who invented the doily or the woman who saved a goat from a flood.
Or the world famous Lulu who has been the subject of so many songs.
2020, good. That gives the next president time to nullify this action. Obama should be erased from the history books as an un-person.
