When I grew up near there, it was solid Red. Then it turned solid Blue.

Not in our lifetime.
I can’t speak of Long Island, but I am watching the suburbs of Chicago with great interest. While never socially conservative, there was enough fiscal conservatism along with distrust of the corruption found in the Chicago Democrat machine to make these area Republican in statewide elections. In 1992 suburban women flirted with Democrat Carol Moseley Braun but by 1996 suburban voters had seen through her. Then in 2002 the twin blows of wide scale corruption in everything touched by then Republican governor George Ryan and stories of prosecutorial/police abuse in Republican stronghold of DuPage county caused widescale defections in the suburbs.
In the 2006 election for governor, ten percent of state voters went third party. By 2010 third parties had a smaller but still significant slice of the vote- Pat Quinn is a plurality governor. Now it seems to be trending back to where it was in the 80s and 90s with suburban antipathy to the Chicago Democrat machine causing the suburbs to vote Republican in state races.
I voted yesterday at my township office in Will County, the far south/southwest burbs of Chicago. Had to wait 20 minutes as there were at least 15 people ahead of me and but one clerk. The clerk said that voting had been “very heavy” all during the early voting period in Illinois.
Will County has Joliet within its borders; the county is red and the city is blue. The county usually wins on election day, and this time I think Will is going to be very, very red.
Small world, Professor, I grew up in Huntington (area). When I was a kid my mom very much enjoyed shopping in Manhasset. 🙂
Sadly, Long Island will remain permanently Blue, as anyone with any Red inclinations tends to flee constraints of New York State (which is bad enough upstate, is far worse in the NY metro area, and of course catastrophic within NYC itself). For God’s sake, the state speed limit is still 55MPH.
I still visit family on Long Island, and picking up a copy of Newsday is much like reading an English-language version of Pravda.
It’s too bad, because Long Island, at least out east, has some truly gorgeous geography. Even besides the terrible political climate, however, there are simply too many people. Indeed, if it had half as many people living on it, it would be still be over populated.
