Failing Mayor Brandon Johnson Lashes Out at AIPAC In Re-Election Speech
AIPAC and donor Michael Sacks have “the power,” Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said.

The failing Chicago mayor used his re-election speech to attack the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, even though the group is not even involved in this race.
On Sept. 13, Johnson launched his re-election bid despite cratering approval ratings. Just 14 percent of Chicagoans want to see Johnson run again in 2027.
The former Chicago Teachers Union president billed himself as the true “progressive” in the race.
“Because for me, progressive politics has always come down to a simple question,” he said during his speech. “Who has the power?”
Without naming a specific opponent, Johnson said:
And so when you hear that someone wants to be your mayor and they claim to be progressive, but they take money from AIPAC and Michael Sacks, and corporate interests and shell PACs, you know who has the power? It’s not you. It’s not our coalition. That’s not working people.
Johnson criticized Sacks again shortly after.
“If I wasn’t that powerful, why do they have to get money from Michael Sacks and corporate interests and billionaires and millionaires,” he said.
Sacks, a wealthy finance executive, is also a major donor to Democratic politics. He is also a board member for the Obama Foundation.
The Jewish Democrat donor is backing Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias in the mayor’s race.
Johnson’s comments drew criticism from Jewish leaders, and the Chicago Tribune editorial board.
“Singling out Jewish people or Jewish organizations as symbols of political influence or control carries a dangerous history that should be understood and rejected, not repurposed as a political rallying cry,” the Jewish United Fund of Chicago wrote in a Sept. 17 letter to Johnson.
The organization pointed out AIPAC “has never spent a dime opposing you or any other candidate for local office.”
The Chicago Tribune described the speech as “full of bile,” in a scathing editorial.
“Giannoulias hasn’t taken a dime from AIPAC — the American Israel Public Affairs Committee — in this campaign, but that didn’t stop the mayor from attempting to tie Giannoulias to the misery in the Middle East,” the board wrote. “He was doing this for the benefit of young progressives for whom the Palestinian cause and opposition to Israel remains an animating issue.”
The editors criticized Johnson for “inserting AIPAC into a race in which it is not participating,” and said “the antisemitic implication of demonizing Sacks and AIPAC, is unseemly even for this city.”
The liberal newspaper even accused Johnson of “Trumpian” tactics in the way he attacked his opponents – an insult that is sure to sting the left-wing mayor.
Johnson’s three-year tenure has seen a number of failures, including the rise of teen takeovers. With his backing, Chicago Public Schools also passed a budget for this school year that relies on $150 million from the state of Illinois – though that money has yet to be allocated.
The former Cook County commissioner has often played to the party’s left-wing base when it is convenient, only to run away when media pressure and political backlash amplifies.
In 2023, Johnson claimed he never supported defunding the policy. However, he indeed supported legislation in Cook County to take money away from the sheriffs’ department.
Last year he drew further criticism for attacking police.
“Jails and incarceration and law enforcement is a sickness that has not led to safe communities,” he said.

The whole thing is fascinating to me but very perplexing. Historically American Jews have been solid Democrats, and ardent workers for social justice for blacks. I am not aware of any Jewish slave-holders. Although I would imagine there were some (there’s always one somewhere) any charge of Jewish oppression of blacks anywhere in history rings pretty hollow. Here I guess the problem is a case of modern-racism of blacks – although Sacks is supporting a different Democrat, he’s obviously a racist because he’s not supporting Johnson.
Historically American Jews have also been shopkeepers, and also investors in rental property, both of which put them in conflict with those who resent anyone who expects them to pay for what they get and refuses to give them “the basic necessities” for free, out of the goodness of his heart.
In Europe Jews were historically moneylenders, with same outcome; they dared to demand that loans be repaid, with the agreed-on interest, rather than letting borrowers sponge off them forever while they and their family starved.
That’s where you get slurs like “slumlord”, “shylock”, “profiteer”, and “bloodsucking leech”, which just mean someone who tries to make an honest living by selling goods and services to the poor, or to those who perceive themselves as poor, even if they’re actually better off than the “leech”.
Jews did hold slaves in the US and the Caribbean. Their numbers were small as you would expect. Blacks also held slaves. The first legal slaveholder in the US was a black man and formerly indentured servant from Angola.
Back when adults were first allowed to join Facebook, a black person wrote in a comment that “the enemy is rich white people” and that when he saw Jews, he saw “more rich white people.” Leftist bigots aren’t the sharpest knife in the drawer.
And yet a depressing percentage of Jews will continue to support and vote for the party which seeks to genocide them. Seriously: I am convinced that if Schicklgruber had promised free health care, free abortions, and to curb the influence of the “Religious Right”, a number of Jews rotting in the concentration camps would have clamored to join the Nazi Party.

Johnson is not some weird aberration that is a betrayal of Communist principles: he is the living fulfillment of the Tribune’s twisted dreams. This dude has much larger problems in his City and much higher obstacles to his bid for re-election than whether Jews individually or collectively are contributing $ in opposition. Why shouldn’t these folks contribute to political contests in accordance with our campaign finance laws?
That said some are contributing and that’s fair game for reasonable criticism within an election contest, just as with any other individual/group …though we can do without the pearl clutching, innuendo from Johnson much less the insinuation that somehow $ received from ‘Jewish’ sources is somehow suspect or presumptively tainted in some way.
