Yale Has Almost One Administrator for Every Undergraduate Student

At the rate they’re going, students will eventually be in the minority.

Campus Reform reports:

Yale nears one administrator for every undergraduate as bureaucracy grows 147 percent: REPORTYale University’s administrative staff has increased 147 percent over the past 30 years, rapidly outpacing undergraduate enrollment growth, a new report has shown. The report, titled “The Exposition of Bureaucracy Growth at Yale: Three Decades of Administrative Growth,” was published by the Buckley Institute on July 30.Among its main findings, the report reveals a rapid increase in “Managerial” and “Professional” staff over the past 30 years. The university employed 2,589 such staff in 1995–96, a number that has ballooned to 6,401 in 2025–26.Comparatively, undergraduate students increased from 5,326 to 6,667 over that same period, meaning the number of administrators grew at a rate almost six times faster.“Simply put, over the last 30 years, Yale’s management has systematically outpaced almost every other segment of the university community,” the report explains.Buckley Institute Founder and Executive Director Lauren Noble questioned whether that growth has affected educational quality and tuition costs at the Ivy League school.“Administrative growth on this scale fundamentally shifts university priorities and attention away from the core mission of education,” Noble said. “It is completely fair to wonder to what extent this growth explains the nearly $100,000 annual cost of attending Yale.”In June, Campus Reform identified 16 universities where tuition has risen above $100,000. Yale estimates that the annual cost of attendance (including tuition and fees) will be $94,100 for the coming academic year.Yale’s tuition has increased from $21,000 in 1995–1996 to $72,500 in 2026–2027.The Buckley Institute further criticizes Yale for a lack of transparency, which it says further erodes public trust in higher education. Noble said that the institute requested more detailed information from Yale without receiving a response.
