Georgetown hosts summer academy focused on social justice activismGeorgetown University’s Center for Social Justice is currently hosting a seven-week summer program focused on social justice advocacy and community engagement, with activities scheduled to continue through July 18.The “Bridges to Social Justice Academy” began on May 31 and brings students to Georgetown’s campus in Washington, D.C., for programming centered on social justice issues, leadership development, and community engagement.The university describes the academy as an opportunity for high school students to explore issues related to “equity” while developing skills intended to support social change efforts.”We will focus on the HOW: the intersecting and necessary ways to create social change through community-engaged research, community organizing and activism, direct service, decolonial philanthropy, advocacy for public policy, and social entrepreneurship for the common good,” an event description reads.The program costs up to $9,085 and will instruct students on topics like “power,” “advocacy,” “organizing, and ”solidarity.”According to the university, the academy is designed to connect students with local organizations and community partners while exposing participants to discussions about social justice and public policy. Program materials state that students participate in workshops, leadership training, and community-based experiences throughout the summer.The academy is administered through Georgetown’s Center for Social Justice, which oversees a variety of service and civic engagement initiatives.Georgetown’s description of the academy emphasizes social justice as a guiding principle of the program. The university states that participants engage with community organizations and educational programming intended to help students understand systems affecting social and economic outcomes.The academy’s curriculum includes discussions related to social change, community engagement, and leadership. Georgetown also provides residential accommodations for participants during portions of the program.
