Stefanik bill could cut federal funds to colleges over anti-Semitism complaintsColleges and universities could lose access to federal funding under a bipartisan bill introduced June 8 that would require schools to establish formal procedures for investigating anti-Semitism complaints and other alleged violations of Title VI.Reps. Elise Stefanik and Laura Gillen introduced the Student Protection and University Accountability Act, legislation that supporters say would strengthen enforcement of federal civil rights protections for Jewish students.The proposal would create Title VI compliance requirements modeled in part after existing Title IX procedures. Supporters argue the legislation would establish clearer standards for handling complaints and increase transparency regarding institutional compliance.The Orthodox Union Advocacy Center, which helped draft the legislation, said colleges and universities would be required to designate a Title VI coordinator, establish procedures for investigating complaints, and prominently display Department of Education guidance regarding Title VI protections.Institutions that fail to comply with those requirements for two consecutive years would become ineligible for federal funding.Nathan Diament, executive director of the Orthodox Union Advocacy Center, said in a statement that the legislation would create “actionable and enforceable policy surrounding Jewish students’ legally protected rights on campus.”Diament argued that some universities have given “second-class status” to anti-Semitism complaints and have “ignored, dismissed, or dragged out” cases without resolution.The bill would also require congressional briefings regarding Department of Education Title VI investigations and modify Office for Civil Rights procedures to help ensure complaints receive full review before dismissal.The proposal follows years of disputes over how colleges and universities responded to anti-Semitism complaints and anti-Israel demonstrations.Federal agencies have investigated numerous institutions over allegations of anti-Semitic discrimination and harassment, prompting lawmakers and advocacy groups to call for stronger accountability measures.
