Student Govt. at U. Maryland Passes Resolution Recognizing Palestinian Prisoners’ Day
“This university refuses to do anything to stand with Palestinian people at all, in any capacity”
The point of this is to try to pass an anti-Israel BDS resolution in a back-handed way.

University of Maryland student government passes resolution recognizing Palestinian Prisoners’ Day
The University of Maryland’s student government recently passed a resolution calling on the university to take a number of public actions supporting Palestine.
The resolution, which passed with a 16-0-1 vote, demands the university recognize Palestinian Prisoners’ Day. Pro-Palestinian activists observe April 17 as a commemoration of the 1971 prisoner exchange between Israel and Palestine.
The legislation states that “recognizing Palestinian Prisoners’ Day is an act consistent with UMD’s stated commitments to human rights, dignity, and the promotion of tolerance within the campus community.”
The resolution also calls on the University System of Maryland Foundation and the University of Maryland College Park Foundation to divest from arms companies tied to Israel’s war on Hamas, which it has done in previous resolutions, according to the school newspaper The Diamondback.
“This university refuses to do anything to stand with Palestinian people at all, in any capacity,” SGA Vice President Riona Sheikh told the outlet. “They should not be so afraid to say anything at all about this.”
Additionally, the SGA renewed its request that the university be made a “sanctuary campus.”
Campus Reform previously reported that a divestment coalition held a mock trial against the university the same day the resolution was passed. During the trial, the group declared the school “guilty” of several crimes committed against Palestinians, including “institutionalized Zionism” and failing to divest from defense contractors.
Mohammad Abukhdeir, a participant in the trial and an SGA legislator, works as a legislative intern for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). CAIR has been categorized as a foreign terrorist group for its alleged ties with Hamas by multiple states, including Texas and Florida.
