Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a 10-day ceasefire, President Donald Trump announced Thursday.
“U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 10-day pause in fighting between Israel and Lebanon starting on Thursday at 5 p.m. ET, following ‘excellent’ conversations he had with each nation’s leader,” the Associated Press reported.
The temporary ceasefire halts a 45-day conflict that erupted after the Iranian-backed terrorist group Hezbollah attacked Israel, drawing Lebanon into the war.
CNBC News covered the details:
The leaders of Israel and Lebanon agreed to a 10-day ceasefire after officials from the two countries met in Washington, President Donald Trump said Thursday. The temporary truce will start at 5 p.m. ET, Trump said in a Truth Social post.In a follow-up, Trump added that he will be inviting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Joseph Aoun of Lebanon to the White House “for the first meaningful talks between Israel and Lebanon since 1983, a very long time ago.””Both sides want to see PEACE, and I believe that will happen, quickly!” Trump wrote.
During the truce, the Israeli military will retain the security buffer zone in southern Lebanon, created after driving Hezbollah terrorists along Israel’s northern border. “Under the terms outlined so far, the ceasefire is temporary and not a permanent agreement,” Israel’s Ynetnews reported. “The IDF is expected to remain in its current positions in southern Lebanon, up to the Litani River, and will not withdraw during the truce.”
According to the news website, it “remains to be seen whether IDF forces will hold static positions during the truce or retain the ability to carry out limited operations if needed, underscoring the fragile and uncertain nature of the ceasefire.”
The Lebanese government has proven to be an unreliable partner for Israel. Although Beirut pledged to disarm Hezbollah by the end of 2025 under the November 2024 ceasefire agreement, the terrorist group has been rebuilding itself. According to the Jerusalem Post, Hezbollah has instead been “replenishing weapons supplies, and recruiting and training new fighters.”
