Pitzer College selects communist activist Angela Davis as graduation speakerCommunist and social justice activist Angela Davis will address graduating students at Pitzer College this May.Pitzer College in Claremont, California is a liberal arts school and a member of the Claremont Colleges. The school’s commencement is scheduled for May 16.The college’s graduating class voted to invite Davis to speak. The college’s announcement of Davis as its commencement speaker describes her as a “celebrated political activist, professor and author deeply involved in social justice movements around the world.”Davis, 82, has been a longtime activist and university professor. As a member of the Communist Party USA, she ran for vice president in 1980 and 1984. She was also associated with the Black Panther Party.“I have always been a communist,” Davis said at a lecture at California State University, Los Angeles in 2016.Davis advocates for prison abolition as a means to address racial and gender discrimination. She helped found Critical Resistance, an organization dedicated to ending the “prison industrial complex.”According to the group, the complex “maintains the authority of people who get their power through racial, economic and other privileges.”“We begin to understand for example that the prison industrial complex is not only about racism and it’s not only about mass incarceration and it’s not only about profit, but it’s also about reproducing an apparatus of gender, when we consider that prisons are designed to be either men’s prisons or women’s prisons,” Davis told students during the 2016 lecture. In addition to her activism, Davis taught at universities across the country, most notably at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The UC Santa Cruz library’s website notes that Davis helped develop courses on “Women of Color and Visual Culture” and “Women of Color: Gender and Sexualities” during her time there.
