Iran-U.S. Talks Appear On Again as Vance, IRCG Leader Reportedly Heading to Pakistan

The Associated Press: “Two regional officials said Tuesday that the United States and Iran have signaled they will hold a new round of ceasefire talks in Islamabad as a fragile two-week truce was due to expire.”

Update: Vance’s flight on hold as Iran won’t “commit to peace talks”

Vice President JD Vance’s flight remains on hold amid reports of infighting within the Iranian regime over whether to participate in the negotiations in Pakistan.

“Vice President Vance’s planned departure for Islamabad was delayed for hours Tuesday as Iran’s leadership remained divided over whether to participate in a new round of peace talks, according to U.S. officials and sources with knowledge of the situation,” Axios reported Tuesday afternoon.

With the ceasefire deadline fast approaching, the Iranian regime has finally confirmed that a delegation will be traveling to Pakistan for the second round of face-to-face talks with the United States, the Associated Press reported Tuesday.

The two-week ceasefire, declared by President Donald Trump on April 7, is set to expire on Wednesday. Iran’s last-minute confirmation comes after days of hardline rhetoric, during which state media declined to confirm Tehran’s participation in the Islamabad talks.

Washington’s participation was never in doubt, with Vice President JD Vance widely expected to lead the talks in Islamabad once again.

“Vice President Vance is expected to depart for Islamabad by Tuesday morning for talks with Iran over a potential deal to end the war,” Axios reported, quoting officials. “The White House spent all of Monday waiting for a signal from Tehran that it would send its negotiating team to Islamabad.”

The Associated Press reports:

Two regional officials said Tuesday that the United States and Iran have signaled they will hold a new round of ceasefire talks in Islamabad as a fragile two-week truce was due to expire. (…)

Pakistan-led mediators received confirmation that the top negotiators, U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, will arrive in Islamabad early Wednesday to lead their teams in the talks, the officials told The Associated Press. (…)

The ceasefire seemed likely to be extended if talks resume. White House officials have said that Vance would lead the American delegation, but Iran hasn’t said who it might send, and Iranian state television on Tuesday broadcast a message saying that “no delegation from Iran has visited Islamabad … so far.”

Iranian state TV long has been controlled by hard-liners within Iran’s theocracy, and the on-screen alert likely reflects the ongoing internal debate within Iran’s theocracy (…).

The talks come amid renewed Iranian aggression, with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) firing on two ships in the Strait of Hormuz—a move set to destabilize the global energy market. Hezbollah, Iran’s terrorist proxy, has launched further attacks in breach of a separate Israel–Lebanon ceasefire.

Ahead of the talks, President Trump assured that the U.S. Armed Forces were “raring to go” if Iran refuses to reach an agreement, Reuters reported:

President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he did not want to extend a rapidly expiring ceasefire in the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran and that the U.S. military was “raring to go” if negotiations ‌were not successful.

Or for fecks sake, when is the Trump administration going to realize that the Iranian regime isn’t going to be negotiating in good faith but is only using these negotiations as a stall tactic hoping to drag it all out until after the Nov. 2026 midterm elections wherein the democrats might retake both the House and Senate? But nope. Yet another worthless round of “negotiations” that will achieve nothing. Time for Trump to simply tell the Iranians they will accept the terms as presented or they will face continued military action until they do. And then actually do it. Thank your for your attention to this matter.

The second opportunity to talk is OK with me but only if there’s no extension. The Iranian regime either meets acceptable terms or we should start blowing things up and breaking things until they capitulate. IOW this should be the final opportunity for the regime to have any ability to influence the final result and if they attempt delay or
equivocation then our delegation should walk out the moment the appointed time for ‘negotiations’ ends. No last minute reprieve. No ‘hey wait a minute’. This should be it and what comes after should be carnage until the Iranian regime, the IRGC and anyone else capable of offering resistance unconditionally surrenders.

    They know.

Unlike leftist morons, they aren’t giving them concessions to ‘negotiate’ in the first place.

The blockade is in place and not coming down. Trump is in no hurry.

Meant an up vote. Hit down by mistake. Does anyone else think these 2 options are too close to each other?

This pause has allowed Shia militia from Turkey, Iraq and Afghanistan plus elements of Hezbollah to infiltrate Tehran. They are patrolling the streets with their flags displayed so Iranians know who is in control while the IRGC is in shambles. No good will come from this. A civil war can start at any moment and if the Kurds join in then Tehran will become Syria.

Who the hell wants to go to Pakistan. If I was negotiating I’d insist on going to Dubai.

The Islamic doctrine of “taqqiya,” to say nothing of 1,400-plus years of Muslims’ perfidious, belligerent and deceitful dealings with non-Muslims, historically, as well as the Iranian regime’s nearly 50 years of brazen deceit and mendacity, ensure that any “negotiation” with Muslim terrorists/fanatics/Islamofascists is intrinsically a fool’s errand.

I agree that the Iranian regime’s goal is to survive by dragging out negotiations in the hope that the elections undercut Trump’s authority and force a return to appeasement.

Barring putting boots on the ground and having a cost effective exit strategy, the only option left is to destroy the infrastructure of Iran and their proxies while denying their ability to rebuild . That means denying access to Iran by China and Russia. That means a strong military and force projection ability which, in lieu of or feckless NATO allies allowing base access, a much stronger navy

Our weakness is our debt. We’re apt to run out of other peoples money to fund our military so Government spending and programs must be cut severely while growing or manufacturing infrastructure. I just don’t know if our politicians have the stomach for that. They seem to resist it at every turn.

The only thing the Iranians respond to is violence. It is a shame but it is a fact. I suggest that for every day in “negotiations”, we take out one power plant or bridge. We have to resume taking out the defenses they have reconstituted as well. Any boat that goes beyond a half mile from their shore including “fishing” boats should be destroyed. If they leave the talks, it is full war. Stop screwing around with these thugs.

If Iran is sending Santa Claus, they’re probably not serious.

The real problem here is: Who speaks for Iran?

Making reference to “Iran” or the “Iranian regime” or “Iranian government” is absurd, because no one is clearly in charge. Not even close.

The religious “supreme leader”, by most accounts, is in a coma and doesn’t even know he’s been selected supreme leader yet. And, in any case, is a mediocrity chosen partly because his father was the previous supreme leader but mostly because the IRGC picked him to be their puppet figurehead.

The “secular” (not really secular) government itself is split between the President, the Speaker of their Parliament, and leftover bureaucrats appointed by the previous regime (their foreign minister being most prominent). These guys are NOT on the same page and often publish contradictory statements within hours of each other.

The real power seems to lie with the Chief of the IRGC. He’s the one that responds to any of the above saying the Straits are Open by ordering attacks (ineffective as they may be) on cargo ships and tankers. He is clearly opposed to any of the above negotiating with the US at all and is able to sabotage all their efforts, but he lacks the legitimacy of their positions.

Somethings gotta give, and its most likely going to play out internally.

In the meantime, the US doesn’t really have ANYONE that they can negotiate with because NONE of the people they might talk to have the authority, or actual power, to make any decision at all so long as the leadership is split into competing factions.

So, the negotiations didn’t happen. No telling when they will. The resumption of hostilities also didn’t happen, because Trump understands the above (he posted about it on Truth Social). But, he wisely kept the blockade in place.

The economic situation will continue to deteriorate rapidly for Iran, which should force them them to make a deal.
