U. Illinois Urbana-Champaign Students Want School to Spend $25K on Reparations Commission

“both just and necessary”

What a waste of money this would be. And it’s all just for virtue signaling.

Campus Reform reports:

University of Illinois referendum urges $25K for reparations commission

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) students voted 87.1 percent in favor of urging the university to provide $25,000 and a faculty representative to join the Champaign County Reparations Commission during the Spring 2026 student elections.

The advisory referendum passed 1,547-229, according to unofficial results published by the Student Election Board. Voting took place Feb. 17-19.

The ballot question asked whether UIUC should “study, repair, and prevent harms caused by racial injustice” by following Urbana in providing the necessary resources to join the commission.

The explanatory text stated that joining the commission is “both just and necessary” and referenced “centuries of exploitation that Black people continue to face.” It also noted that the university would provide $25,000 and a faculty representative “of the community’s choosing.”

Although the measure is non-binding, it directly calls on a state-funded university to allocate institutional resources to a county-level reparations initiative.

Turning Point USA at UIUC declined to comment on the referendum and whether the student government should advocate for allocating university funds toward a reparations commission.

The reparations referendum appeared alongside other ballot measures, including a proposal to exclude fossil fuel companies from the University of Illinois System’s investment policy, which passed 86.6 percent, and a question regarding campus expressive activity policy, which passed 83.6 percent.

The school should immediately spend the money, and add it to student dues.

They should spend the money on a statue of Anthony Johnson, a man of color, for bringing African tradition to America.
