Democrat Senator Suddenly Open to DHS Funding After Michigan Synagogue Attack

“Certainly, we need to fund the Department of Homeland Security, and we need, in my view, to cut away all the conversation on ICE, which is its own conversation, from all the core missions of the DHS.”

As Legal Insurrection has reported, Democrats have been playing with fire with their refusal to fund DHS over supposed “concerns” about ICE, with one, Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI), actually stating earlier this week that the party was “very serene” about withholding funding amid national security threats, long lines at airports, and federal workers in certain departments not getting paid.

But now, with four jihadist-style attacks taking place on American soil over the last two weeks, at least one – Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) – appears to be shifting gears.

Slotkin’s state was one of the four where the attacks happened, with a rifle-wielding madman crashing his vehicle into a West Bloomfield Township synagogue on Thursday in a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community,” according to the FBI.

Fortunately, all 140 children at Temple Israel’s child care center, along with clergy and staff, were unharmed. The security director was injured but is expected to be okay, and dozens of first responders were treated for smoke inhalation from the vehicle catching on fire.

The only person to perish in the attack was the perpetrator, Dearborn Heights resident Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a Lebanese national who, in the ultimate cowardly act, shot and killed himself during the gunfight that ensued with security officers.

On Friday, Slotkin was asked her thoughts on the fact that DHS was currently not fully funded and if she thought that left us “less prepared for incidents like these.” Here’s what she had to say:

“Yeah. I would say the department, because they are essential workers, they have been at work,” Slotkin said. “Certainly in Michigan, we have a ton of DHS folks, CBP and so they are on the call and they are doing their jobs. Certainly, we need to fund the Department of Homeland Security and we need, in my view, to cut away all the conversation on ICE, which is its own conversation, from all of the core missions at the Department of Homeland Security. But they’re essential, they are on the job and they are working today.”

Interestingly, Slotkin had a chance to do just that on Thursday, but… she didn’t:

“Her post went up at 1:55 pm yesterday. The vote ended about half an hour later. She was a no on reopening DHS,” Fox News political analyst Guy Benson later emphasized:

Well, at least now we know what it takes for Slotkin to be more open to funding homeland security: an actual attack in her state.

The Democrats’ quest to protect criminal illegal immigrants in this country from deportation has now reached the point that critical funding is not getting to the agencies that need it to ensure the security of the homeland amid increasing threats and actual attacks.

These dangerous political games are having the net effect of emboldening Islam/ISIS-inspired terrorists to hurt and kill people in the United States. The longer the Democrats’ Resistance antics keep up, the stronger the likelihood that we’re going to see more attacks.

Democrats are showing us and the rest of America who they really are again and with whom they side, and we should believe them.

Virginia is still standing firm against US security for political gamesmanship.

Start the hardball. Make the Senators feel the pain from their constituents by closing down TSA to one lane at airports within States where Senators voted against funding. Start redeploying Coast Guard assets (part of DHS) away from ports within those States to other areas where they are appreciated, plenty of work for the CG in the Gulf of America. Be a real shame if port traffic and airline traffic had to be rerouted to other ports in other States. Golly, the airlines and shipping companies might find they really like the friendly business climate in these right to work States and make long-term investment there bringing jobs out of deep blue areas to Red States. Be a real shame if that happened.
