Viterbo University Instructs Staff to Lower Academic Expectations for Illegal Alien Students

“Silence may be a survival strategy for students navigating immigration-related stress”

There are so many things wrong with this. Lowered expectations? Really?

Campus Reform reports:

University instructs staff to lower academic expectations, extend deadlines for illegal alien students: EXCLUSIVE

Viterbo University, a private Catholic institution in La Crosse, Wisconsin, is instructing faculty to accommodate illegal alien students by relaxing attendance policies, assignment deadlines, and classroom participation expectations.

The university issued guidelines instructing faculty to relax academic standards for illegal alien students facing “immigration-related stress” by offering “flexibility, extensions, or alternative arrangements.”

The document says staff should be aware that immigration status can lead to “declining academic performance” and “difficulty concentrating,” and claims illegal alien students may miss classes “due to family emergencies or fear of leaving home.”

Campus Reform obtained an internal email in which Viterbo University President Rick Trietley distributed the guidelines to university employees.

Professors are told to be mindful that “stress may affect attendance or academic performance” and to avoid penalizing students who remain silent in class discussions, citing fear of revealing their legal status.

“Silence may be a survival strategy for students navigating immigration-related stress,” the document reads. “Students may limit participation or avoid conversations that could lead to questions about citizenship or legal status.”

Alongside academic leniency, the document urges staff not to refer to use the word “illegal” when referring to illegal aliens, calling the term “stigmatizing.”

The document says to use “non-stigmatizing terminology such as ‘undocumented’ or ‘unauthorized” instead.

“When possible, focus on a person’s status rather than using it as a defining label (e.g., ‘a student without legal status’ rather than ‘an illegal student’),” the document states.

In place of “illegal aliens” simply substitute “criminals” as a class.

People who commit ongoing felonies are often stressed by the possibility of arrest and detention; just because someone jacks cars or robs frail elderly people (both of which are relatively non-violent crimes) is no reason to for their schooling to suffer.

But “criminal” is also a stigmatizing nomenclature; “unauthorized borrower” or “person who overly roughhouses” would be more acceptable.

I am baffled why there is such a large segment of Americans that think lowering standards to promote some identified victim class. It should be clearly identified as discrimination. There are few things more American than baseball. The dimensions of the home-plate are 17″ wide for the NL and AL, it is 17″ wide for the minor leagues, it is 17″ wide for college baseball, it is 17″ wide for high school baseball, and it is 17″ wide for little leagues. With standards, we all strive and a few succeed. We honor those who exhibit excellence against standards – regardless of there backgrounds.
