No One Wants To Fund San Fran’s Reparations Program
San Francisco’s potentially expensive reparations program has not excited any donors yet.
Private donors and foundations have so far refrained from funding San Francisco’s new reparations program. Despite sitting less than an hour from wealthy Silicon Valley and its numerous woke tech companies, no one is rushing to open up their checkbooks to help the alleged victims of historical racism.
However, the city has spent at least $217,000 to date on studying how to distribute reparations.
Created in December by a city ordinance, the reparations program promised to rely on private donors rather than government funding, according to National Review.
The mayor’s office did not provide any info on private donations.
“I was elected to drive San Francisco’s recovery, and that’s what I’m focused on every day,” Mayor Daniel Lurie told the news outlet in response to an inquiry. “We are not allocating money to this fund — with a historic $1 billion budget deficit, we are going to spend our money on making the city safer and cleaner.” It is the exact same statement Lurie used when he first signed the ordinance.
National Review also contacted the board of supervisors, but no one provided any further details on donations.
Still, the city is already on the hook for some costs, including a monthly $250 stipend to committee members. National Review calculated the total costs so far for “committee work” to be at least $217,000.
That pales in comparison to the ambitious proposals from the reparations committee, including a “a one-time, $5 million payment to each eligible person,” according to National Review.
The payment “would compensate the affected population for the decades of harms that they have experienced, and will redress the economic and opportunity losses that Black San Franciscans have endured,” the report stated.
Other proposals included wiping away all debt owned by black residents, free insurance, and sell public housing units for a “$1 buy-in,” according to the report.
San Francisco is not the only municipality to face problems implementing a reparations program.
Evanston, Ill., which sits just north of Chicago, offered to help pay for home repairs if people could prove they or their ancestors were discriminated against by the suburb.
Some of the early recipients who received the assistance complained that they would rather just have cash for other needs. Other concerns were raised that taking the money would put the residents over the income limits for receiving welfare.
Meanwhile, lagging sales of marijuana, which partially fund the program, have also caused budgetary issues.
“We’re hoping responsible cannabis sales increase,” Alderwoman Krissie Harris said at a March meeting, according to The Daily Northwestern.

You want to know how to provide reparations to your residents of all colors?
Give an extreme conservative a red pen and the city code. Grant this individual the authorty to strike out by whole section ordinances, rules, and regulations, but not write any new ones. Then ban the implementation of new for a minimum of seventy five years.
Progress towards the Founders/Framers idea of freedom (meaning freedom FROM government) will only happen when Congress starts repealing 000s upon 000s of federal statutes, reducing the size of the beast.
The issue in three words: Too Much Government.
That $217,000 doesn’t really cover the costs of what they’ve wasted on this offensive and unconstitutional rubbish. They had studies and meetings, public and private. That actually takes time and money. They preoccupied themselves with this nonsense at the expense of productive matters they could have addressed.
In a sane and less corrupt city, they’d be removed from office or voted out. But democrats don’t do sane and less corrupt.
If such a fund was ever created and then distributed then that would settle everything….right? Nope, there can be no settling of this issue. Later generations will need the victim status as a political issue.
Later generations will have victim status with the same issue. As I’ve mentioned here before, if the current generation is paid “reparations,” won’t the next generation still be descendants of slaves and therefore similarly aggrieved to the current generation? So what will prevent them from demanding similar payouts?

If Trump was a good guy, he would just give SF a couple of billion from the federal budget. If would help bring justice to SF for all of their ex-slaves to be made whole.

I see a simple solution. Internationalize reparations.
Britain, France, Spain, the Netherlands, and Portugal should pony up as major contributors to the transatlantic slave trade.
Since Belgium, Luxembourg, and much of Italy were parts of Philip II”s inheritance, they should also pay. Ireland was part of Britain, so they could also contirbute. Come to think of it, Denmark-Noray and Sweden were into the slave trade, too, so the Scandinavian countries could also invest some of their wealth. Since Brandenburg had a colony on the Gold Coast back in the day, Germany as the successor state could also contribute. Even Latvia could join in, since the Duchy of Courland colonized Tobago at once point. Austria, Hungary, Czechia, ad Slovakia could help, since they stemmed from the patrimony of Spain’s Carlos Quinto y Primero.
Let’s not forget our Caribbean neighbors, who were transshipment points to what would become the USA. I’m sure Cuba, with its unflinching support for social justice, would be happy to invest some of its sugar earnings in reparations for African-Americans.
And then there’s the Maghreb countries of Libya, Tunisia, Morocco, and Algeria, who taught the Iberians that Subsaharans made good slaves. Surely the “pride and dignity that Islam gives to the black man” would make the amendable to contributing.
As heirs of the people who did the actual capturing and selling of slaves for the Transatlantic trade, all the African states from Mauretania down to Angola should also pony up.
