Trump Warns Canada of 100% Tariffs Over China Trade Deal

President Donald Trump sharply escalated trade tensions with Canada on Saturday, warning that any move by Ottawa to deepen economic ties with China would trigger sweeping retaliatory tariffs from the United States. In a lengthy Truth Social post, Trump accused Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney of positioning Canada as a backdoor for Chinese goods into the U.S. market.

“If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a ‘Drop Off Port’ for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken. China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life. If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A. If Canada does not want to trade with the United States, they should just say so. Canada survives because of the United States, not the other way around. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

According to Reuters, Trump’s warning follows Carney’s recent outreach to Beijing, where the Canadian leader praised China as a stable economic partner and encouraged deeper trade and investment ties.

Trump said China would attempt to use Canada to evade U.S. tariffs, warning that any such arrangement would be met with immediate retaliation.

Fox News reported that Trump repeatedly framed Canada as a potential “drop off port” for Chinese goods, warning that such a move would undermine U.S. trade enforcement and broader national interests.

Trump referred to Carney as a “governor,” echoing comments he has made previously about Canada’s reliance on the United States, and warned that Canada “should be grateful” for what it receives economically from its southern neighbor.

The remarks underscore the administration’s increasingly confrontational posture toward China and signal that Canada could soon find itself caught in the crossfire if it proceeds with further trade agreements involving Beijing.
