Josh Shapiro Reveals Harris Asked if He’d Been ‘a Double Agent for Israel’ During VP Vetting

Harris also brought up finances: “She said that she knew we didn’t have a lot of money, and that Lori was going to have to get all new clothes and pay for people to do her hair and makeup.”

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro has completed a memoir, Where We Keep the Light: Stories from a Life of Service, scheduled for release on January 27. The popular Democrat has recently launched his reelection campaign and is widely expected to seek his party’s presidential nomination in 2028.

The New York Times obtained an advance copy and offered readers a sneak preview. Among the many topics Shapiro explores in the book is the vetting process he underwent in the summer of 2024, when he was among several candidates under consideration to serve as former Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate.

First, the popular Democrat, who happens to be Jewish, noted that Harris’s vetting team “focused on Israel to an extent he found offensive.” According to Shapiro, former White House counsel Dana Remus wanted to know if he’d ever been “a double agent for Israel?” When he replied that “the question was offensive,” he was told, “Well, we have to ask.”

Next, she asked, “Have you ever communicated with an undercover agent of Israel?”

Shapiro replied, “If they were undercover, how the hell would I know?”

At the time of the vetting, anti-Israel protests were sweeping college campuses across the country, and Shapiro had been openly critical of what he saw unfolding. When Harris asked whether he would be willing to apologize for statements he had made — particularly about what he observed at the University of Pennsylvania — he declined. “I believe in free speech, and I’ll defend it with all I’ve got,” he explained. “Most of the speech on campus, even that which I disagreed with, was peaceful and constitutionally protected. But some wasn’t peaceful.”

Shapiro wrote that after former President Joe Biden withdrew from the race, he wondered if “there would be a process the party would engage in to replace him? Did I want to be part of that?”

His wife, Lori Shapiro, was traveling at the time. When he approached about throwing his hat in the ring, she told him, “I am in a Canadian Walmart right now. Maybe not the ideal time for this conversation. I don’t think we are ready to do this. It’s not the right time for our family. And it’s not on our terms.”

As it turned out, there was no primary process. And before too long, he wound up on Harris’s short list of potential running mates.

According to the Times’ account of the memoir:

He also had reservations about the vice-presidential search process from the start, and says that he ultimately decided to withdraw himself, after meeting with Ms. Harris at the end of the process. He asked to be connected with Ms. Harris to share the decision, he wrote, but says he was told “the VP would not handle bad news well and that I shouldn’t push.”

During the vetting, he wrote that he was pressed on areas of disagreement with Ms. Harris, including “energy, cutting taxes, supporting law enforcement,” and how the coronavirus pandemic had been handled.

Mr. Shapiro, a relative moderate with a record of appealing to crossover voters, suggested that Ms. Harris’s team was out of touch with the politics of the most crucial battleground state on the map.

Shapiro wrote that although the “sessions were completely professional and businesslike,” he “just had a knot in my stomach through all of it.”

The Times noted that in her own 2025 memoir, Harris expressed concern about “the attacks he’d confronted on Gaza and what effect it might have on the enthusiasm we were trying to build.” She was also wary of Shapiro’s “sharp criticism” of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — which strikes me as ironic — given her own viral snub of Netanyahu the very week she launched her 2024 presidential campaign.

Harris also wrote about “a nagging concern that he [Shapiro] would be unable to settle for a role as number two and that it would wear on our partnership.” Additionally, she worried that he “had been getting ahead of himself, already thinking about decorating the vice president’s residence with the work of Pennsylvania artists, and wrote that he had mused about wanting to be in the room for every decision.”

I don’t doubt that she was being candid. She was unwilling to risk being eclipsed by her vice president.

After Harris’s memoir was published, Shapiro told The Atlantic that her words were “blatant lies.”

In his own book, he handled the daylight between them more “diplomatically.” He wrote:

If we had door A and door B as options, and she was for door A and I was for door B, I just wanted to make sure that I could make the case for door B, and if I didn’t convince her, then I’d run right through a brick wall to support her decision. She was crystal clear that that was not what she was looking for.

During one meeting with Remus, the topic of the Shapiros’ finances was addressed. He wrote, “She said that she knew we didn’t have a lot of money, and that Lori was going to have to get all new clothes and pay for people to do her hair and makeup.” Remus’s comments left him “a little slack-jawed.”

Later, at home, he recalled his teenage son saying, “It doesn’t seem like you want to do it.”

The Times wrote, “Soon after … he tried to communicate that view to Ms. Harris’s team.”

The democrats hate you Shapiro. You are likely smarter than they are and they know it. They’re going to hate you more and more too. Wake up already and leave that party of anti-american anti-western marxist/socialists antisemites.

The reports that I am reading is that the question seemed quite normal for the democrats since they are very pro hamas, pro Iran and anti israel

Further, the people surrounding Harris are all former Obama people, and Obama was very pro Iran, wanting Iran to become a regional power. Eric Holder likewise was very much top of the vetting process

Asking me that question would have resulted in either:

      1) Asking how long they were an Iranian/Indian/Canadian double agent, or
      2) Punching them in the nose

depending upon how long the interview had gone and how ornery I was feeling at the
      moment,

He’s controlled opposition within the party. They quietly love him for that and will probably heavily consider him for POTUS so they can seize power.

I doubt he has any interest in switching parties because he is in the catbird seat right now.

He should have asked her how often she’d tag teamed?

BigRosieGreenbaum | January 19, 2026 at 2:26 pm

OMG, WTF?! Frankly I would have have answered yes, I am a double agent with “dual citizenship” like the rest of the Hebes you assholes!

And yes, Shapiro is way smarter than that stupid stupid woman. Did they vet her husband, the crypto Jew, as well, I wonder?

You lost me, BRG. What is a “crypto Jew”?

Jews who were forced to convert, usually on threat of death, and practiced as much of judaism as they could in secret. The Maranos of Spain are an example – and it passed down – you find some Maranos who are now Spanish Catholics lighting candles on Shabbat in the basement (and things like that) with many of them not even knowing why they do it, anymore.

      Sanddog in reply to Q. | January 19, 2026 at 2:55 pm

It’s Jew who practices their faith in secret while outwardly, pretending to be something else. During the Spanish Inquisition, many Jews converted to Catholicism to prevent being killed. Some of them actually came to America when Spain was colonizing their territory to avoid questions about their “devotion”.

Nah he’s at least a quadruple agent I would think.

destroycommunism | January 19, 2026 at 2:29 pm

why wasnt this fact revealed as it happened??

oh that would be mis information on the dems part…voter disenfranchisment on the dems part
a practical insurrection on the dems part

whats next…no water allowed in line!

The time to address this was when it happened, Josh… not much later in order to protect your party.

According to Shapiro, former White House counsel Dana Remus wanted to know if he’d ever been “a double agent for Israel?”

A “double agent”?? You have to be a single agent before you can even qualify to be a double agent.

Nice to know that the Canadian Kamala team and the dem party seem to know NOTHING about the most rudimentary elements of espionage. Not a surprise, though.

destroycommunism | January 19, 2026 at 2:50 pm

well the harris team does know that the squad is/are double agents for their marxismnazi agenda

Now I’m dying to know what globetrotters can get in a Canadian Walmart that they can’t get in a Baltimore WalMart.
I mean, besides Cuban cigars.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair in reply to henrybowman. | January 19, 2026 at 3:01 pm

The top flight Canadian maple syrup. Didn’t Canada put the screws to us by restricting export of their best maple syrup in retaliation for Trump’s initial tariffs? I know I’ve been suffering immensely …

MajorWood in reply to henrybowman. | January 19, 2026 at 3:03 pm

    Uh, not shot for starters.

Here’s how the conversation went:

Harris: Hi, Josh.
Shapiro: Hello, Kamala.
Harris: Now tell me, Josh, moron to moron . . .

Owning up she was a anti Semitic Leftist

Hard to see what big deal is. She Kamala just being careful thorough intellectual here as evidenced by her getting 80% of Jewish votes prob including Gov Josh and Mrs Gov Josh.
In all Kamala is the perfect bright nuanced candidate that Jews just love.
On side note Gov Josh better watch out that Mayor Frey does not surpass eclipse him as the next top gun Jewish future prez guy.

And he bravely said all of this.. nearly a year and a half after it happened.

Shut up, Democrat coward.

destroycommunism | January 19, 2026 at 4:20 pm

oh look,,she didnt pick him as vp b/c as was “rumored” hes joowish

how blmplo progressive of her

Remus: “Are you a double agent for Israel?”

Shapiro: “You got me there. I’m responsible for all the lousy weather here in Pennsylvania lately.”

And, to underscore the offensive and bigoted nature of crone-harlot-dunce, Harris’s team’s inquiry to Shapiro, you know that as sure as the day is long, that no Dhimmi-crat staffer running a background check on a Muslim Dhimmi-crat apparatchik would ever dare to ask him/her if he/she was an agent of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Indonesia, Nigeria, the Sudan, Somalia, etc.

The vile, stupid and evil Dhimmi-crats are such wretched scum.

Envy of Jews. So common and clear. It gives them an imaginary, illusory control. Enough for the envious. These deluded are dangerous.

So democrats just ask if someone is a spy for another nation and then just accept the answer? Certainly explains the spies in Hochul, Swallwell and Fienstein’s offices.

WOW. Just wow…. We so dodged a bullet with Kamala.
