Eastern Washington University Found to Allow Transgenders in Female Dressing Rooms

In a recent discovery by CriticalRace.org, Eastern Washington University was found to include a locker room policy that specifically states students may use whichever changing facility that matches their gender identity. According to the Eastern Washington University Policy Administration’s EWU 402-02: Diversity & Nondiscrimination policy, students are allowed to undress in whichever facility matches their “gender expression or identity.”

In Section 5 of the policy, Eastern Washington University states it “allows individuals the use of gender segregated facilities, such as restrooms, locker rooms, and dressing rooms that are consistent with that individual’s gender identity.”

“In facilities where undressing in the presence of others occurs, the University shall allow the use of a facility consistent with that individual’s gender expression or gender identity. The University shall not request that an individual use a gender-segregated facility that is inconsistent with that individual’s gender expression or gender identity, or require that individual to use a separate or gender-neutral facility.”

With out-of-state tuition nearing $25,000 a year, parents face the possibility of spending more than $100,000 on a four-year education while knowing their daughter may be required to change in a facility shared with men.

Past instances of men undressing in women’s locker rooms raise serious concerns for the privacy of girls at these facilities. In Wisconsin, one instance occurred at Sun Prairie East High School, where an 18-year-old transgender female showered alongside 4 freshman girls, completely exposing them to male genitalia, leaving the girls disturbed.

In January, President Trump signed Executive Order 14168, “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government,” which barred transgender women from female spaces on the federal level while also recognizing the existence of two genders, male and female. This executive order has caused a ripple effect among several states, as many are pushing to enact similar legislation.

The discovery at Eastern Washington University comes amid new restrictions in Texas that limit transgender individuals from using private facilities that do not align with their biological sex, to protect the privacy of women. On Tuesday, Senate Bill 8 went into effect, requiring all individuals who use public facilities to use multi-occupancy private spaces that correspond to their biological sex. This bill also applies to public universities in the area.

While the prospect of a similar bill remains low in a progressive state like Washington, federal pressure resulting from the precedent of Executive Order 14168 could spell trouble for all public institutions that offer gender neutral changing facilities.
