Our coverage of Columbia University following the October 7th attacks has been extensive. While many schools had a problem with antisemitism on campus, Columbia stood out as an extreme example.
Knowing that, the findings of this task force report should not be a surprise, but it’s still alarming.
The Jewish Insider piece is behind a paywall, but FOX News has some details:
Columbia review finds Jewish students were called ‘murderers,’ blasted with anti-Israel tiradesColumbia University’s antisemitism task force has released its final report on instances of Jewish and Israeli students being harassed in classrooms. The nearly 70-page document outlines repeated incidents involving both students and professors and recommends changes the university should make. The task force was created in Nov. 2023 after protests broke out on the Ivy League campus following the Oct. 7 terror attacks and the subsequent Israel-Hamas war. Dozens of students were arrested during anti-Israel demonstrations and a weeks-long encampment protesting the war. This is the fourth report in a series looking into their policies and allegations of antisemitism. Columbia says it compiled the findings after “listening sessions” with students who came forward to describe what they’ve experienced on campus.According to the task force, Israeli students were singled out or harassed in class, including one student who was allegedly told she should be considered “one of the murderers” because she had served in the Israel Defense Forces. In another case, the report says a teacher told students that three major Jewish donors had given money with the aim of “laundering blood money” and referred to Israel as “so-called Israel.”
The folks at the Washington Free Beacon did a deep dive on this and uncovered more:
‘It’s Such a Shame That Your People Survived’: Columbia Report Details ‘Disturbing’ Anti-Semitism From Instructors at Ivy League SchoolColumbia University published its fourth and final anti-Semitism report on Tuesday. It paints a “disturbing” picture of life as a Jewish student at the Ivy League institution, where instructors smeared Jews and Israelis in their classes as occupiers and “murderers” and used unrelated lectures on topics like astronomy to rail against “genocide” in Gaza. The report recounts a number of “disturbing incidents in classrooms” that Columbia’s Task Force on Antisemitism uncovered through conversations with Jewish and Israeli students. Some of those incidents—like the January storming of an Israeli history class by keffiyeh-clad students who distributed pro-Hamas leaflets and harassed Jews—were highly publicized when they happened. Others were unknown until the report’s release…Many of those instructors, according to the report, used “classes whose subject matter is far removed from Zionism, Israel, and the Middle East” to offer “harsh condemnations of Israel.”In an introductory astronomy class, an instructor began the semester with a unit on “Astronomy in Palestine,” writing on the class’s syllabus that “as we watch the genocide unfold in Gaza, it is also important to tell the story of Palestinians outside of being the subjects of military occupation.” In an introductory Arabic class, an instructor used the sentence, “The Zionist lobby is the most supportive of Joe Biden,” for a vocabulary lesson. And in a class on feminism, “the professor opened the first session by announcing it had been 100 days since Israel began waging war on Gaza.”
Last word goes to Ilya Shapiro.
