Michelle Obama on White Women’s Hair, Why Blacks Can’t Swim, and Why She’ll Never Run for President
“And let me explain something to white people. … Don’t tell me how to wear my hair. Don’t wonder about it. Don’t touch it. Just don’t.”
Liberal commentator Bill Maher once described elite universities as the “mouth of the river from which nonsense flows.” I would argue the colorful description applies equally to perpetual victim Michelle Obama, who beclowned herself again during a recent interview with actress Tracee Ellis Ross at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
Obama is out with a new book, titled The Look, which is touted as “a stunning journey through Michelle Obama’s style evolution, in her own words for the first time.” Her sit-down with Ross is being promoted as a “live conversation on beauty, culture, and confidence” that is “rich with wisdom, laughter, and deep reflection.” Some viewers might reach a different conclusion.
In the clip below, a discussion about hair, her barely concealed resentment toward white people rears its ugly head again.
She said a lot of people want to know what braids mean. I don’t know about you, but that thought has never crossed my mind.
She spoke in an unmistakably condescending tone, and each remark seemed to generate more laughter and applause than the one before it. The audience loved her!
Look, y’all. … That’s [how] white folks are. What does it mean? What are you saying?
We’re saying nothing except I just don’t want to have to do my hair everyday. I want to go swimming.
And let me explain something to white people. Our hair comes out of our head naturally in a curly pattern, so when we’re straightening it to follow your beauty standards, we are trapped by the straightness.
That’s why so many of us can’t swim … and we run away from the water. People won’t go to the gym … because we’re trying to keep our hair straight for y’all.
Why do we need an act of law to tell white folks to get outta our hair? Don’t — Don’t tell me how to wear my hair. Don’t wonder about it. Don’t touch it. Just don’t.
I have never wondered about Michelle Obama’s hair. And my guess is that few, if any, “white folks” have either. Regarding “white folks” wanting to touch her hair, she really needn’t worry.
But I do have a question for her. Although in recent days, we often see Obama sporting braids, why did she spend decades trying to adhere to “white people’s beauty standards?”

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the interview was Obama’s response to that age-old question: will she ever run for president?
To my tremendous relief, she said she would not. But it was her reason for not running that captured everyone’s attention. It was framed in rhetoric that amounted to a pointed slight against the United States.
“As we saw in the past election, sadly, we ain’t ready,” Obama told Ross. “That’s why I’m like, don’t even look at me about running, because you all are lying. You’re not ready for a woman. You are not.”
Ross asked Obama whether she felt her eight years in the White House had opened the door for a woman to become president.
“You know, we got a lot of growing up to do, and there’s still, sadly, a lot of men who do not feel like they can be led by a woman, and we saw it,” Obama replied.
Or maybe, Michelle, men simply believed that former Vice President Kamala Harris would have made a terrible president. And despite Harris flattering herself by calling the 2024 race one of the closest in history, it wasn’t; Hillary Clinton’s margin in 2016 was far narrower than hers.
Regardless of Obama’s actual reason for not wanting to run, she still had to cloak it in a disparaging remark about the U.S.
Responding to a TMZ post on X about the comment, conservative influencer Stephen L. Miller wrote: “Amazing. A 250 year-old democracy has still not reached Michelle Obama’s lofty personal standards. We continue to disappoint her.”

Obama has many good reasons for not seeking the presidency. She leads a charmed life. Why would she want to give that up for the grind of the campaign trail? Also, while liberal women admire her, conservative women hate her, and we have no idea how the rest of the electorate feels about her. Finally, unless one considers eight years as first lady to be adequate preparation for the highest office in the land, Obama is, quite plainly, not qualified to be president.
But, as always, she still managed to work in a jab at the United States.

When we moved south I had no idea about black women’s hair and the problems. One day I noticed my boss had a different hair style and told her it looked great, she gave me the gimlet eye and told me it was a wig. I was stunned. She then told me she had always worn a wig and in morphed into a long conversation about hair, lye straighteners and so on. At no point did I ask if I could rub her head.

Just FYI to Michelle, Black women are t the only ones with challenging curly hair. Plenty of other ethnic and racial groups have it too. Just ask Armenians , Italians , Jews and tons of different Hispanic cultures. We all be dealing with difficult curls ; and yes I’ve had people ask to touch my hair. I remember an article from “My Weekly Reader” in grade school about the first missionaries to a remote tribe. All the villagers wanted to touch the skin of the first white person they had ever seen. I distinctly remember there being nowhere in the story where anybody got bent out of shape about any of that. But I didn’t know at that time that only white people were racist, so maybe that made sense.

I had a conversation with a team member last week. She is black and has locks/dreads and they are beautiful. She mentioned that there is no white people standard that black people are obeying. It’s a black culture thing about hair. So, Mrs. Obama is really failing to take personal responsibility(like Hillary) for her choices and perceptions, projecting all of her inadequacy and failure on the spectre of a racist boogyman than has ling been dead. On the other hand, her idiocy certainly doesn’t persuade white people to have confidence in black people. For that, personal relationships with real people are needed.

Like most women who are uncomfortable with their appearance, it is a reflection of the male gaze. I mean that literally (not in the Biden sense, either) as in its a reflection of the fact that other women get more male attention than she did. When it mattered she didn’t attract attention from the men she wanted to date, and had to settle for Barry Soreto.

I have a friend with medium length blond hair. When she taught in a totally integrated elementary school, some of the black girls wanted to touch her hair. Apparently they’d not seen blond hair in person. She fixed her hair in a wide “bun” that spanned the back of her scalp. She let a few girls touch her hair. NO big deal.
As for conversations – she also had them with young, black women – about the braids – not the braids themselves but that was a style that white women really can’t wear.. Why? the texture of black hair and white hair is different. The braids would not last in caucasians, they would slip apart. The women she talked to HAD NO PROBLEM ANSWERING HER QUESTIONS. When I joined the military decades ago we had water survival training. Our company was probably half white and half hispanic/black. Not one black person could swim. I found that odd but when asked all of them said they just didn’t grow up swimming anywhere. There was no mystery, they just never learned and weren’t interested.

Only a couple of the guys I knew were from the rural south and they were deathly afraid of snakes like water mocs and wouldn’t go near water so that is a valid point I suppose. None could ice skate either.
In a very early experimental consciousness raising session, the black woman said it’s hard because Western standards of beauty exclude her, her nose is too broad, her hair is wrong, etc. That was informative and it hadn’t occurred to me. I’m genuinely perplexed by Big Mike’s bizarre explanation for why so many blacks can’t swim. Is it possible that young black girls start straightening their hair before they’re old enough to learn to swim (say, before the ago of 6)? And what about black males? The vast majority of them, it seems, never straighten their hair.
Does Big Mike never ask herself these questions?
