Deja Vu? Climate Study Hints at New Ice Age

Legal Insurrection readers will recall that this summer I noted that every hot summer day was being reported as a climate apocalypse, with new phrases being created to generate clicks and panic.

Now that winter is coming, its time to retool the narrative. Climate scientists say a vital Atlantic current could falter within decades, an event they claim might spark a new ice age, according to a controversial new paper.

The apocalyptic predictions came as a result of a collaboration between researchers at the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS) and the University of California, San Diego — weeks after one-time climate alarmist Bill Gates publicly downplayed the impact of temperature fluctuations on the planet.Per the new findings, the at-risk current in question is the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation or AMOC, a “conveyor belt of the ocean” that funnels warm water toward the ocean surface — from the tropics to the Northern Hemisphere. This current, which includes the Gulf Stream that runs from the Gulf of Mexico to the US East Coast and across the Atlantic to Europe, helps maintain the mild climate of Europe, the UK, and the US East Coast. The study stated that the source of this marine temperature regulator, the Greenland Ice sheet, is being thawed amid warming temperatures, causing meltwater runoff to leach into the North Atlantic — leading to stagnation.

The paper is published as a Nature Briefing, in its the journal Communications Earth & Environment. To begin with, there are a couple of concerns I have outside of the actual analysis.

China and its scientists have a keen interested in promoting climate panic in the West, as they can then sell us solar panels and EV while they build coal plants. The author list raises by level of skepticism exponentially.

Furthermore, “Nature” is now experiencing a backlash by real scientists who are tired of touting ideology. Climate claims of this magnitude, projecting weather and currents decades into the future have of history….of being absolutely bogus. The brand has been damaged by DEI, and the effects are just starting to be seen.

Let’s turn to the paper for a few moments and review  what the authors say about the AMOC collapse creating a new period of glaciation.

The researchers assert that mid-depth warming (1000–2000 meters below sea level) in the equatorial Atlantic is a clear sign that a major current called AMOC is slowing down, mainly due to “human-driven” climate change. They argue that surface temperatures in the ocean can be very noisy and affected by short-term local weather, making them unreliable for spotting long-term trends. By looking deeper, these scientists claim that found that sustained warming between 1000 and 2000 meters in the equatorial Atlantic and say its a much clearer signal of AMOC slowdown, since it’s less impacted by short-term variability.

The rest of the analysis relies on computer models.

It is theorized that the AMOC weakens or collapses, less heat reaches northern Europe and the Arctic, so winter temperatures can plunge several degrees, even as other parts of the world remain warm or get warmer. Colder conditions cause more sea ice to expand southward from the Arctic, reaching the coasts of northern Europe. Sea ice reflects sunlight instead of absorbing it, which amplifies cooling—this is called the “ice-albedo feedback”. As a result, the region loses more heat to space, and temperatures drop further.

Thus, a new ice age begins. It’s the 1970’s all over again.

Meteorologist Chris Martz has an analysis with data that refutes these claims.

In a nutshell, the AMOC is stable and collapse is unlikely to happen quickly or without extraordinary conditions. For example, using air-sea heat flux as an indicator, another team of researchers found no evidence of AMOC weakening between 1963 and 2017. Many climate models only show an AMOC collapse if much more freshwater is added to the Atlantic than occurred even during massive past ice sheet melts, and such model collapses usually take several hundred years to appear.

However, the hysteria is beginning. Iceland has already designated this theoretical scenario a national security threat.

Iceland has designated this the potential collapse of a major Atlantic Ocean current system a national security concern and an existential threat, enabling its government to strategize for worst-case scenarios, the country’s climate minister told Reuters. The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, or AMOC, current brings warm water from the tropics northward toward the Arctic, and the flow of warm water helps keep Europe’s winters mild.

If globalist bureaucrats and their media minions can’t stoke fear about heat waves, then it’s time to stoke them about snow and ice…in time for winter.
