Trump Admin Taking New Steps to Bar Harvard From Federal Grants

HHS has referred Harvard for debarment.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the Trump administration has begun a different process to bar Harvard from receiving federal grants.

The Office for Civil Rights in the Health and Human Services Department (HHS) told Harvard President Alan Garber it will refer the school “to a process called debarment.”

HHS can debar schools from federal funds if it finds evidence of misconduct, fraud, or violation of federal law.

President Donald Trump and his departments have tried to strip Harvard of funds over the rampant antisemitism on campus.

Earlier this month, U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs ruled that Trump unlawfully canceled $2.2 billion worth of funds for Harvard.

Burroughs claimed that Trump used antisemitism as an excuse to target Harvard.

Trump pulled the funding because Harvard refused to comply with a bunch of demands, such as merit-based hiring reform, discontinuation of DEI, and reforming programs with egregious records of antisemitism or other biases.

Last month, Trump told Education Secretary Linda McMahon that he wants a $500 million settlement from Harvard.

“We want nothing less than $500 million from Harvard. Don’t negotiate, Linda,” he said. “They’ve been very bad. Don’t negotiate.”

Comments

Obama judge Burroughs has a history of pro-Harvard and anti-Trump rulings so it’s unlikely anything the Trump administration does will be acceptable to her – other than giving Harvard whatever it wants.

I guess it’s too much to expect someone receiving grant funds from the government to actually have to obey federal law.

Harvard lost a SCOTUS case due to discrimination in admissions.

Anyone imagine they are in compliance with that decision?

Me neither.

Fed. Dept of Education should demand all of their admissions data since the date of that ruling for review to determine if they are in compliance.

Glenn Loury, who takes the Palestinian side, said that he understands that Hamas holds up babies as shields but he’s not going to pay for the bullets you use.

An analogy to Harvard with anti-American policies. You can do it but we won’t pay for it.

Glen Loury, like Neil DeGrasse Tyson, veers miles outside of his expertise to comment glibly on everything when he knows so little. He claims to be a bright economist who didn’t benefit from affirmative action when he clearly did. He, like all leftists, pretends to not be a bigot, while being one. We don’t pay for Israeli’s bullets, nor are the Israelis shooting children. It’s a ruse to pretend he’s being righteous and rational while he’s just proving his anti-Semitic ideology while pretending to be a devout Christian.

like a hundred years in the making

I’m still unclear why an institution with a $50 Billion dollar endowment needs billion dollar subsidies from US tax payers.

Still and again: DEFUND the UNIVERSITIES.

Yet again, LI is using a stock photograph of Brown University: (the gate at 14 Prospect Street, Providence RI, to the so-called Quiet Green) for an article solely about Harvard University, when there are a myriad of stock photos of Harvard available on line. What gives? Does somebody there have a thing for Brown, or are they trying to further damn Harvard by refusing to show a correct image of it? Either way, it suggests carelessness in writing the article, and possibly in the facts upon which it is based! Does anyone at LI ever read your own threads???
