Fashion battles don’t always happen on the runways of Paris or Milan. Sometimes, they ignite on TikTok feeds, billboards, and X.com. This summer, denim lovers everywhere are witnessing a full-blown showdown: The Great Jeans War of 2025.
It all started with American Eagle’s blockbuster denim campaign featuring actress Sydney Sweeney. The edgy yet playful ads struck a perfect balance: a nostalgic nod to 1980s fashion sensibilities, combined with some fun wordplay, and a direct hit on woke marketing ideals. The campaign took over timelines worldwide and, more importantly, featured a healthy and fit model unafraid to be… healthy, fit, and happy with feminine curves.
But of course, in this country, the competition doesn’t stay on the sidelines. So a couple of other companies have launched some fresh new campaigns.
Lucky Brand, long known for its laid-back SoCal heritage, wasted no time. Lucky rolled out a campaign that matched American Eagle’s production value and effectively utilized an attractive model. However, instead of the 1980s, it opted for a 2000s sensibility.
TikTok icon Addison Rae launched a topless campaign for her new Lucky Brand jeans collaboration. The reveal comes as the online world debates Sydney Sweeney’s controversial American Eagle ad, leading to immediate comparisons.Addison Rae released her Lucky Brand collaboration on Thursday, August 21, in a Y2K-esque campaign filmed at Los Angeles’ historic Million Dollar Theatre. In one photo, she goes topless, accessorized with pearls, while another shows her playfully tugging at her low-rise jeans. A third image shows her sprawled over theater seats, highlighting the figure-hugging flared denim she helped design. The Addison Ultra Low Rise Flare reinterprets a Lucky Brand silhouette from the early 2000s. Rae added unique touches, including a collectible back patch, branded hang tag, and the signature “Lucky You” fly label. The jeans come in two washes: dark “Hidden” and light “Bare,” both inspired by the brand’s Y2K archive.
Gap then followed with a campaign that winked at its classic ‘90s roots while speaking to a new generation. Clean, crisp backdrops, and choreography that couldn’t decide if it were Bollywood or hip-hop.
It features the global pop girl group Katseye dancing fully clad in denim to “Milkshake” by Kelis. The campaign aimed for a “bold, expressive, and inclusive point of view,” Gap brand CEO Mark Breitbard said in a press release.Gap didn’t directly throw shade at American Eagle or Sweeney in the ad, but users on social media started comparing the two campaigns as the Gap ad grew viral.
Demerits given for the ham-handed and inane “inclusive reference”. However, kudos for using physically fit and attractive men and women.
I have been an opponent of the “body positivity” nonsense since Day One. It is vital to provide people with reasons to make healthy lifestyle choices. Using exercise and a balanced diet allows people to have the stamina to handle long workdays, social commitments, and life’s challenges. People who exercise consistently often report higher energy levels and less fatigue.
Being physically fit lowers the risk of many chronic conditions (e.g., heart disease, diabetes, obesity). And, in turn, it makes you more resilient to infectious diseases (such as COVID). Even moderate levels of physical activity and healthy lifestyle habits can help extend life expectancy and improve overall quality of life.
Finally, embracing a healthy lifestyle is a form of self-care. It signals to yourself that you value your well-being, and that can strengthen your confidence in all areas of life. Therefore, you are less inclined to follow the lunatic leftists when they push for actions that are ugly, harmful, and debasing.
Meanwhile, to inspire more Americans to exercise and eat right, the Trump Team has begun the “Pete and Bobby Challenge”.
One last thing: Let’s give a shout-out to the models of the 1980s that helped inspire the latest round of fashion wars.
